Update on raising the profile of person-centred approaches to care and support

Update on simplifying the concept and identifying high impact interventions and approaches using improvement methods

• Since we registered in May we now have over 300 followers on Twitter. We plan to continue promoting Twitter as we go forward.

• In July Shaun delivered a presentation to a group of public partners from the Scottish Health Council. This was well received and we hope to continue making links with other key groups of public/patient stakeholders over 2013/ 2014

• Over July and August we held or scheduled a round of conference calls with programme partners from individual boards. This has been an excellent opportunity to understand the rich variety of existing person-centred activity as well as providing advice and support for taking forward the collaborative.

• We are closely aligned to the Older Peoples programme and as part of this Shaun has joined the OPAC team during their Test Site Summer Tour including a visit to Caithness General Hospital, NHS Highland

• The team have been using conference calls, Webex’s and individualised support to discuss the use of improvement methods and measurement support

• At LS2 the team worked with Tommy Whitelaw, Dementia campaigner to raise awareness of his work to support improvements in Dementia care. Tommy has produced a short film interview which he has posted on You Tube that can be used by boards as a PCC reflective learning aid: To view the film copy and paste the following link into your browser: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36_Y_3y0yXM

Our partners

Focusing on what’s do-able now

Designing health and care services that provide reliable opportunities to personalise support for every person all of the time

Promote integration and sharing of ideas and approaches between people who use services, health, social care and third sector

Progress with putting in place a framework to measure success

• A range of work is underway across Scotland that fits well with the collaborative aims: NHS Orkneys improvements to hospital breakfast service and redesign of their comments card system; NHS Ayrshire and Arran have six tests of change underway including 3 teams testing new flexible visiting times and 3 teams implementing the ‘must do with me’ bundle. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has identified 33 test teams in acute and community settings to take forward the ‘must do with me’ bundle

• NHS Education for Scotland have developed 5 e-learning modules to support NHS Boards to meet their responsibilities to ensure that all staff are trained to deal with feedback, comments, concerns and complaints. Use this link to find out more: http://www.knowledge.scot.nhs.uk/making-a-difference/resources.aspx

As part of our commitment to delivering an inclusive process that meets the aspirations of all of the population of Scotland we have begun to develop plans to take forward a process to scope out our aims and approaches to ensure that we do not exclude anyone or create differential impacts

• We have begun to put in place plans with our partners to develop options and content for Learning Session 3. More about this soon.

• Our partner organisation, The ALLIANCE is taking forward the coproduction workstream. Find out more about this here: http://www.alliance-scotland.org.uk/what-we-do/projects/people-powered-health-and-wellbeing/. To find out more about the Third Sector copy and paste the following link into your browser: http://www.discoverthethirdsector.org.uk/

• NHS Ayrshire and Arran have put in place plans for a learning and development programme including a staff development session in October, and they have asked for our help to support this

• We held a combined programme manager meetings in June and we have another date in August meeting at the Forth Valley Hospital, Larbert

• We have held discussions with other teams about the measurement framework and toolkit. Teams include: Transforming Outpatient Services, Out of Hours, Maternity Care collaborative and the Chronic Pain team

• Jocelyn Cornwell (The Kings Fund) and Glenn Robert have produced a very helpful short paper on policy approaches to measuring and improving patient experience. We recommend that boards have a look at this as it fits very well with our views on the way forward. • The Health Foundation has also produced an interesting paper on measurement which is longer but includes some key pointers on things that need to be considered when planning how to measure changes in patient and carer experience over time. Learning Session 2

We held Web Ex sessions with boards to introduce the online measurement support including the IHI ExtraNet system and the ‘Your Care Experience toolkit’. These have gone well and we are now looking at how we can provide additional support to boards to take this forward.
