Drive-Thru Communion Sunday, August 2, 2020
The COVID-19 pandemic makes it difficult to have Holy Communion. Even though we have been back to worshiping in person for close to 2 months now, we have not had Holy Communion together. Holy Communion is one of the two sacraments in The United Methodist Church along with Baptism. Holy Communion is a gift of God’s grace as we recall the life, death, and resurrection of Christ. Jesus and his disciples had a last meal before Jesus’ arrest, crucifixion and death. When we celebrate Holy Communion, we are bound closer together in community. When we celebrate Holy Communion, we share in the life of Christ that holds us all together. The first Sunday in August we are going to have Holy Communion again in a creative way. We have purchased all-in-one Communion Elements that are sealed. The elements are packaged in a unique way. There is a
small wafer sealed on top of a small amount of grape juice. The sealed packages are handed out and then those being served open the package themselves. The all-in-one packages are the most sanitary way to take Holy Communion during a pandemic. On August 2, we will bless the Communion Elements at the end of our in-person service like we always do. Then, everyone will go to their cars, and Communion will be distributed by Pastor Dennis as everyone leaves. If someone did not attend the in-person service, they are welcome to drive-thru for Communion. You can watch the livestreamed service and then come to the church parking lot to receive Holy Communion. We will form a line in our vehicles and exit onto Carr Street. Whether you attend the service, watch worship online, or not, you are free to receive Communion at 11 a.m. on Sunday, August 2nd. We will bless Holy Communion during worship Sunday morning on the 2nd. Then, we will go to the parking lot to distribute Communion. If you are not with us in-person, come to the church parking lot and we will all drive thru. Worship begins at 10 a.m and Communion will be at 11.

My newest friend is our family dog. She’s a greyhound we have decided to call Emily. She is a retired racer, and ran many races before her retirement. Emily is not a puppy. She is six years old and has transitioned to living in our house quite well, so far. Emily has never lived in a house, but she is getting the hang of it. She goes to the bathroom outside. She likes to go for a walk once or twice a day, and she likes to sleep. I have found sleeping is what greyhounds do best. For a dog that ran fast for many years, Emily has yet to run since joining our family a couple weeks ago. She does like her naps (she sleeps about 18 hours a day). I am impressed how my dog can fall asleep and be content. There have been days over the last few months where contentment is hard to find. There are plenty of worries, and it is easy to feel hopeless and a little lost. During times of worry and concern, Scripture instructs us to not be worried about every little thing. In Matthew 6 Jesus says: “So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today’s trouble is enough for today.”
In John’s gospel account Jesus tells us that God goes before us to prepare a way. In John 14 Jesus says: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me.” It is difficult to not worry about things, but our faith tells us to stay focused on Jesus and he will lighten our load (Matt. 11:34). I hope you are trying to connect with Jesus each and every day. I am trying to be more focused on daily prayer and noticing good thing in the world around. My dog sleeps so much because she feels safe and confident that she will be alright. Our faith teaches us that Jesus sees us through difficulty and makes goodness and hope possible. Have some faith in these times that Jesus Christ will see us through. We can take time to rest in Christ. Look around and find some goodness and beauty in your day and thank God for it. Let’s trust that Christ holds us up and is with us. Sleeping 18 hours a day won’t make me feel better, but holding onto the grace of God will help me be more content.
In Christ, Dennis
