5.1. Introduction and general tips

Even though you may have great skin, it’s still useful to use make up to cover imperfections and to give a

uniform finish.

It’s necessary to use a good quality toner and moisturizer before you apply any make up so you prepare the

skin for any base you apply later.

Make up can be used in various formats: powders, cream powder, and tinted moisturizer, compact or fluid.

It’s important to use the correct texture of make up for your skin type. There are many skin types:

combination, dry, oily, sensitive. You also take into account young or mature skin when choosing the

appropriate make up.

To achieve an excellent final result, apply makeup evenly over the face and neck in an upward circular

motion. Avoid caking which leads to a mask effect. Always choose a shade that matches the skin tone or

even slightly lighter as this intensifies blush and powder corrections.

Never use a darker color. The best place to check the shade is to test a patch behind the ear or the inside of

the wrist where the skin is similar to your face.

Go ahead, apply it!

5.2. Applying make up

Once you have selected the correct make up, it must be applied consistently. Take the product in small

quantities. You can add more when necessary. It is important to cleanse tone and moisturize to prepare your

face when applying the first makeup of the day. Next, apply a base all over the face avoiding the eyebrows

but reaching the roots of the hair. Use a circular motion which also stimulates the circulation of the face.

Once you have applied the base, use concealer to hide any blemishes or dark circles under then eyes and

then proceed with any corrections needed – cheekbones, dark circles, chin or forehead as we spoke about in

the previous section. Blush should be applied depending on the face shape you’re making up as described in

the previous module. Blush shade will depend on the skin shade.

For tanned, golden or olive shades of skin we recommend pink shades of blush, or possibly white. For pink

skin - brown or earth shades or possibly white, although this can harden the features. A salmon colored

blush suits almost all skin tones. Both peach and salmon rejuvenate and work with almost everyone.

Apply blush from the center of the cheekbone to the temples in an upward circular motion, shaking off any

excess product before you start.

The next step is applying eye shadow, mascara and shaping your eyebrows. The following section of this

module will go through different eye shapes and recommended eye shadow application.

We find applying highlighter to emphasis features is an excellent way to enhance your make up look, do not

use highlighter to conceal blemishes this will only make them stand out more! We recommend applying

highlighter along your cheekbones or right above them if you want to sculpt out your cheeks, down the

center of your nose, this will slim your nose down slightly and just under your eyebrows.

Applying lipstick is the final step to complete your look. You'll find more information on lipstick

application later in this module.

Applying lipstick is the final step to complete your look. You'll find more information on lipstick

application later in this module.

Eye Makeup depends on the shape of your eyes.

Sunken eyes

For Sunken use lots of mascara to give volume and a medium or dark eye shadow applied from the middle

upwards to give the illusion of eye lift. Apply eye liner on the bottom.

Drooping Eyes

Drooping eyes tend to drag the face down. You can use corrective shadows to lift these and give them more

expression. Raise the crease with a medium color applied to the center of the lid, a light shade to the

remainder and a medium shade again to the rest of the eyelid. Apply eyeliner in an upward direction to lift

sad looking eyes.

Eyes close together

For eyes that are close together, you need to amplify the inner corner and give depth to the outer half. Apply

illuminating shadows to the inner corner and middle, dark shades to the outer area. Only apply eyeliner and

mascara to the outer half of the eye to give the illusion of more separated eyes

Small eyes

If you’re making up small eyes, you can really change them to look like larger, more expressive eyes with

eye shadows. When outlining, don’t put emphasis on the inner or outer corners. Lift the lashes into a fan

shape to open the eyes and use some dark shadows, blending upwards. Apply eye liner to bottom.

Prominent eyes

For prominent eyes, make your eyeliner straight, not strictly following the contour of the eye as this will

emphasize the prominence. Use dark or medium shadows to give depth to the eyes. Always use light shades

just below the eyebrow and blend into the inner corners. Apply eye liner on the top and bottom.

Page 10: Personal Image & Beauty Expert · Once you have applied the base, use concealer to hide any blemishes or dark circles under then eyes and then proceed with any corrections needed

Large eyes

For large eyes, use a medium shade on the lids and a darker one in the crease, just coming in halfway. Use a

light shade under the eyebrows. You can outline both inside and outside the lids with eyeliner.

Applying lip make up

Lips are a very important part of our face. They represent sensuality and are focused on when you speak so

proper care with appropriate corrections will keep your lips beautiful and in great condition.

You have a range of products to choose from to make up lips; pencils, lip cream, gloss, lipstick. As long as

the lips are well moisturized you can choose any type of product. As face moisturizer is not always what’s

needed by the skin on the lips, choose more specific lip nourishment.

You can profile, shape and define the lips and camouflage imperfections beautifully with products.

As you can see in this diagram, the pink lip liner reshapes lips to correct less attractive natural lines. Light

colored products usually suit thin lips better and for fuller lips use brighter colors.

5.3 Day time tonight time make up

Use soft, neutral tones for day time make up – a foundation that blends with skin tone, a slight hint of blush,

light eye shadow, a little mascara and lip gloss.

This make up can be modified to a more look suitable for night time when you want a more dramatic effect.

You achieve this by using more intense color. When you’re moving straight form a day time situation into

an evening one, say leaving the office for a party, bring some useful products with you.

As you can see here, the first picture is a face with a fresh, natural looking make up for day time. Moving on

to the second and third images, more mascara has been applied, strong red lipstick and a medium color

eyeliner and eye shadow.

You don’t have to remove and reapply your make up to do this. Using a baby wipe, remove the lip color

you’ve been wearing during the day and apply red, raspberry or garnet colored lip liner and lipstick. On your

eyes – mascara can wear off during the day; reapply using a medium or dark shade for a more dramatic

effect. If dark shades suit you, use darker shadows and more intense blusher, blending in well

5.4 Materials and products

To apply makeup well, it’s important to know the tools you’re using will do a good job.

To apply foundation you can use the following:

There are sponges and also latex paint brushes. We think a sponge applicator achieves the best results.

Page 13: Personal Image & Beauty Expert · Once you have applied the base, use concealer to hide any blemishes or dark circles under then eyes and then proceed with any corrections needed

11 | P a g e

The eyes need special products but you don’t need a large number of tools. Three brushes are usually

enough.

Brush to apply shadow under the eyes or to achieve specific finishes.

Brush to apply shadow.

Brush to blend shadow.

Eyebrow brush; one end is used to apply color and fill in gaps in the eyebrows, the other to comb smooth.

Other brushes you’ll find

Bevel brush to apply illuminations near the eye cup or in areas that are difficult to access with a regular

brush.

Wide, round brush for applying blush.

Fan shaped brush for removing excess shadow or make up.

Lip brush – the brush you need is a natural bristle brush, pointed, to reach corners and peaks.

We recommend natural hair brushes. They last longer and will help you apply products more easily.

Products

As we already learned, make up comes in different formats; powders, cream powder, tinted moisturizer,

compact, fluid.

Blush can also come in compact or powder, though we recommend cream powder as it’s easier to apply and

lasts longer.

For the lips, you’ll also find products in various formats – pencils, lip cream, gloss, and lipstick. We

recommend you try them all, however if you have very dry lips lipstick may not suit.

Mascara is essential. It comes in either waterproof or normal, which is not water resistant. If your eyes water

a lot then choose the waterproof ones.

If you’re attending a special occasion where you need your make up to last all day, choose long lasting,

good quality products.

5.5 Tips and Tricks

To keep your face bright, here’s a really good natural tonic. Place slices of cucumber on your cleansed face,

preferably using a cucumber that’s straight out of the fridge. It will add water and the coolness will activate

the circulation in your face. You’ll find your skin smooth and soft all day.

For your lips, take a toothbrush with medium bristles, insert it into iced water for 30 seconds and then gently

brush your lips. This will remove dead skin and also improve circulation. To finish, apply lip balm or cocoa

butter.

If you have bags under your eyes, again use cucumber. Place slices on your eyes and let them sit for several

minutes to reduce puffiness and dark circles.

For hair – it’s important to nourish it well. You can make a mask with honey and yoghurt which will

moisturize it naturally. Apply all over your hair; allow penetrating overnight, and then washing normally

with warm water. If you can tolerate cold water, all the better as it increases shine!

5.6 Home beauty tips

Instructions

To look your best, you don’t need to spend large sums of money on cosmetics.

It’s very popular to use natural ingredients for beauty care. More and more Spas and beauty salons are

using natural products and techniques.

Make a natural scrub by mixing salt and almond oil, prepared in a non-metallic bowl.

Rub all areas lightly in a circular motion to exfoliate.

Emphasize the elbows and knees and avoid sensitive areas such as around the eyes.

Rinse with warm water.

The result will be smooth and nourished skin with a healthy sheen.

You can also make a very nourishing mask that will serve to moisturize and soften the skin on your face,

give shine to hair and prevent frizz.

Take a very ripe avocado. Cut it in half, remove the stone and scrape the flesh into a bowl.

Mash, and if you have very dry skin add olive oil.

With a soft brush, apply the mask all over your face, avoiding the eye area and lips.

Allow to be absorbed for 20 minutes to take effect. If you notice itching or any other reaction, remove it

immediately. Some natural products can also cause allergies.

You can apply the same mixture to your hair.

Remove the mask with warm water.

If you’re prone to dry lips from being in windy or cold weather, rub them with a toothbrush to exfoliate,

removing dead skin.

Then apply honey with a lip brush and leave on for 20 minutes.

When you remove the honey your lips will be nourished and healthy.
