Personal Information Form

Introduction

The Ministerial Vocation Committee and the Office of the Stated Clerk of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church are responsible for denominational vocational services. As part of the process of “matching” ministers and congregations, the Office of the Stated Clerk provides resources and advice to both pastors and congregational search committees. To that end, we ask congregations and ministers to complete information forms as an introduction to each other, and a first step in the process of calling a minister for a congregation. For both the individual pastor and the congregation, this is an opportunity for self-study and for evaluation of current ministry and goals. This calls for honesty, effort, and commitment to open communication.

The Personal Information Form presents the unique skills, gifts and experiences of a pastor. Search committees are encouraged to approach this information respectfully and prayerfully. It is our hope that this will be of help in facilitating the search process. It is also important to keep in mind that these Information Forms are an initial introduction. The second phase of the process will be more in depth interviews with those who appear to be most compatible with the congregation’s vision.

1. Life Story: In one page, describe your life’s journey. Include key incidents that were significant in your formation as a person and your call to ministry. State your personal ideals and goals.

I was raised by Christian parents. Going to church was a normal weekly activity until I went off to college and had my teenage independence. As a young college student living hours from my parents home I fell into the sinful trap of pursuing secular pleasures instead of scriptural pleasures. My walk with the Lord took a serious detour for some 20 years. I lived a God-less life, got married out of convenience, divorced and was in financial ruin. I met a wonderful woman who also was divorced and was just as lost as I. Both our spouses fell to the influences of alcoholism which led to both of our divorces. We married 13 years ago and started our new life. The Holy Spirit came alive in my heart and gave me new eyes to see. We both came to realize the importance of having God in our lives and together we began our new walk with Jesus. We quickly got a tremendous thirst for God and turned our life over to Him. God began working in our lives with obvious and frequent signs of grace. We both quickly became very active in our church full of the passion to serve a God that clearly called us out of darkness. My passion for teaching grew as I began teaching adult Christian education and still teach to this day. My thirst for God seems to never cease. The more I read the more I want to read. My library began to grow. Although I did not have a magnificent, event filled, eye-popping conversion the conversion was dramatic to me in its own slow way. I do feel that God has elected me and called me to serve Him. My heart feels transformed and is eager to learn more of what He has is in store for our lives.

During the last thirteen years (since accepting Jesus as my personal savior) my wife and I have been very active in the church. My wife, Rhonda, was the head of our church WIC (Women in the Church) organization and God called me into the Diaconate at Seacrest PCA in Delray Beach, FL. Rhonda has also headed up several small bible study groups at home. One of her biggest challenges was working on a fund-raising committee for the building of a multimillion dollar church. Perhaps the most constant ministry that I have been involved with is adult Christian education. I have taught classes of all sorts; The Shorter Catechism, The Book of Matthew, Christian Finance, Reformed Theology, Christian Motivation, Christology, Galatians, Colossians, and many others. As a deacon my focus was the ministry of mercy. We lived in south Florida where there are a large proportion of elderly. I would weekly visit them in hospitals, hospices and assisted-living facilities where I would share the Sunday Worship Service message and pray with them. I served on various other ministries by working on an Outreach Committee, Fellowship Committee and Drama Team. All these involved ministry to both the church congregation and the surrounding community. Perhaps one of the most challenging positions God placed me in was Chairman of the Board for a Christian School of near 400 children from Pre-K to 8th grade. Dealing with church administrative issues, school administrative issues, and Christian education became quite an education in itself. Our family Scripture verse is Joshua 24:15 ‘As for me and my house, we shall serve the Lord’.

Goals: I am being called by God into His ministry. I feel Him guiding me towards ordination into the Presbyterian Church. Of all the different ministries such as Christian Education, the Diaconate, serving as a ruling elder, and countless other ministries; I feel God leading me toward becoming a teaching elder. We, as mortal men, can not see the future. We do not know the full extent of God’s plan for our lives. We certainly can look back and see how God has worked in our lives and look forward to serving Him wherever he leads me. I sense God is leading me into

Page 10: Personal Information Form - Pastor Dale Robertson · Web viewTaught adult education classes in Christian Finance and Christian growth for Sunday school as well as host to Wednesday

Pastoral Ministry however my wife and I are in humble submission to our Lord and Savior and gladly follow where he leads us.

2. Please describe briefly (confine your answers to two pages):Leadership style.Decision-making process. As God puts a decision-making process before me I try to first look for a Christ-like model to follow in Scripture pertaining to the issue at hand. The second step would be to pray. The overall theme behind any decision-making process must be a mindset of having the ultimate goal of any decision-making process would have to be to glorify God.Administrative style. In my secular career I have primarily been an administrator. Through my Christian walk, Christ and the Holy Spirit have molded me, directed/instructed me, and corrected me. I have grown to understand that an affective and efficient administrative style is best when led less by managing and more by facilitating. With facilitating being perhaps the predominate style, an eye towards change should be ever present as a static structure seems to eventually become harmful. God does not want us to be complacent. Dealing with conflict. God has given us the Matthew 18 principle which has proven effective many, many times in my life. This principle could be applied in many settings; church, home, school, etc. Bible study classes from books like Peacemakers and War of Words have taught me valuable lessons on dealing with multiple types of conflict. The result I am hoping for in any conflict is to show God’s love, to speak from the authority of Scripture, and lead them to the love of Christ and His love for His church.Worship emphasis.Preaching style. On January 23, 2011 I have preached 159 times and have used three types: topical, textual, and lectio continua. In all three types all my preaching is expository; preaching that takes the point of the text as the point of the sermon. My preference would be to preach lectio continua (going through one book at a time), but an occasion topical or textual sermon would be acceptable. Preaching Christ crucified has been in my message with each sermon presented. I am sort of a mixture of a practical applicator, persuasive motivator and passionate teacher.Preferred worship emphases. Christ crucified is my emphasis. Preaching the Word is critical to any worship service. A sermon would not be complete without mention of Christ’s sacrificial work and the need for repentance.Style. I am conservative by nature. I was raised conservative and like a structured, disciplined style. God seems to be leading me in a direction of less rigidness and toward a more loose and flexible style.Ministry gifts/skills/strengths.God has blessed me with a passion for teaching, preaching, and mercy ministries. I have been teaching Christian Education almost continually for the last thirteen years. Since receiving God’s call to go into the ministry, I have been blessed with many opportunities to preach the gospel and I passionately look forward to each and every opportunity. God has blessed me with a compassionate heart for young couples, the sick and elderly. I am especially drawn to present Christ’s love to young families raising young children. My eight years in diaconal ministry revealed God’s gift to me in ministry to the old and sick. I really receive must joy from visiting the elderly and sickly. For many years I would take detailed notes from the Sunday morning sermon and briefly review those notes with the various shut-ins after worship serve at their homes, in nursing homes, or in hospitals. It was surprising to see how receptive people are to hear what the sermon was all about at church that day. They would have

Page 11: Personal Information Form - Pastor Dale Robertson · Web viewTaught adult education classes in Christian Finance and Christian growth for Sunday school as well as host to Wednesday

at least some sense of being in church even though they could not. You could tell they would just relish the opportunity to talk about themselves as if they had nobody else concerned enough to hear their story. Often all I would do would nod and just let them speak with an occasional chuckle from time to time where appropriate. It is as though they longed for loving attention. I would close in prayer by holding hands; they seem to like the physical touch during prayer. My prayer would be typically short and to the point but very personal to their concerns and needs. Finally I would leave them with a copy of the church bulletin and a comment about my continued prayer for them as I walked out the door. I’d get this sense of spiritual fulfillment as I drove away and it would almost been a sense of selfish guilt as I felt a sort of works salvation in what I did. A reminder of my sinful nature would dispatch that though quickly and realize that God can use a sinner like me to do His will. I feel I have the gift of organization. God has blessed me with a business sense to really appreciate the need for organization. For the last twenty years I have become very disciplined about my work and life in general. I became a 5K and 10K runner and soon learned the importance of organizing a rigid workout schedule together with a well laid out eating regiment, and a detailed recording of my workouts and races. This quickly became part of my work ethic as well as I became very organized at work by creating and fervently sticking to whatever schedule(s) I set up. Being an independent owner/operator, I soon realized the benefits of being very organized. Serving my home church as pulpit supply for a year, I incorporated with same organizational effort into the administrative affairs of the church. Besides cleaning up the filing system, organizing report, minutes, and church documents, I looked at the various administrative responsibilities of the churches day to day operation. We were able to create a Benevolent Manuel which helped lay out instruction for use of benevolent money for those in need. We were able to create a Rules and Regulation booklet on issues of the church like wedding and funeral guidelines. We were able to create an Elder/Deacon training manual to be used every year for educating potential elder/deacon candidates as well as a refresher course for current church leaders. I believe that church administration is one of those forgotten requirements in pastoral ministry which is quite valuable and God has blessed me with this gift.Vision for ministry.God has laid it on my heart to present the gospel as mandated by the Great Commission in Matthew 28 with special emphasis on the second half of the commission: “… teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” The primary focus of presenting the gospel should be on Christ crucified for without that message all other messages are without strength. God has called me into the ministry and where he leads me I will follow.I see great value in the straight forward “means of grace” driven ministry. The ministry of the Word then should drive all other ministries of the church. The Word addresses everything that the church might encounter. 1 Timothy 3:16-17 states, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.” The Scriptures are God’s means of building up his people. The plain ministry of the Word is important especially during a time when other ministries seem to take center stage, even above the word of God. If the Scriptures are God’s means of building up his church then ministry will happen as the word impacts the lives of believers. I believe that the plain teaching and preaching of Scripture in the context of the local church will rightly lead to a whole variety of ministries within the local church, in the community, and ultimately to the whole world. I think too often this order is reversed. The church begins with a whole host of ministry ideas and the teaching and preaching of the Bible gets tacked on. I do encourage Sunday school, small groups meetings, community groups, prayer breakfasts, or any of these types of ministries. All of these can be very encouraging and even necessary ministries of the church. However, I believe these ministries should grow organically in the church through the preaching of the word.

Page 12: Personal Information Form - Pastor Dale Robertson · Web viewTaught adult education classes in Christian Finance and Christian growth for Sunday school as well as host to Wednesday

Preaching of the Word of God and the administration of the sacraments are two vital ministries which are very fundamental to my vision for ministry. Flowing from these two will be all other values. Being transformed by the word and built up by the sacraments the church will gravitate toward a biblical view of worship and ministry.

3. Comment briefly on your views as relates to: (Confine your answers to one page)a. Spiritual giftednessI believe that all Christians receive spiritual giftedness from the Holy Spirit. In fact, Galatians 5:22-23 teach us about the fruit of the Spirit. God uses those gifts given to us to edify the church, to build each other up, and to bring forth the message of the gospel. The church is filled with men and women of various gifts and all to be used for the kingdom of God.b. The charismatic movement The Charismatic Movement has been a blessing to the church of today by breathing new life into it but at the same time abuse has occurred and the church has been hurt in some situations. One of the great benefits of the charismatic movement has been allowing new found freedoms to envelope today’s church.c. Women in ordained office God Word teaches us that men are to embrace ordained office as they are called by God. However, scripture also shows that God has and thus suggests that he will call women to serve as leaders in the church. Just as 1Timothy 3:12 teaches that men should lead God’s people so Judges 4 teaches that God chose a woman to lead God’s people. Unfortunately in our culture of today we see women taking a much more active role in the church than men and thus the need for women ordination. My belief is that men should be encouraged and taught their responsive role in religious leadership in the home and in the church.d. Presbyterian connectional systemThis is very important in the strength of the church locally, regionally, and nationally. I have been blessed to see the church connectional system in action during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and Rita which swept through South Louisiana and Mississippi in September 2005. It was amazing the outpouring of prayer, manpower, supplies, and financial support generated from Presbyterian churches throughout the nation. Word was spread from the EPC General Assembly office, to each of the Presbyteries and down to what I suspect every individual church throughout the country. We are now one year later and we are still receiving prayers and manpower. We have witnessed at least 10,000 lives have been touched by our small church alone through the efforts of churches all across our great nation.

Also very important in the Presbyterian connectional system is the system of higher courts of the Church. I have a great passion and willingness to be a participant in the higher courts of the Church. Presbyterianism calls for local rule in matters of church disciple, but the local church voluntarily subjects itself to higher councils such as the courts of appeal. In our form of church government, the validity of local rule is affirmed, but it is always subordinate to the larger church. This form of government avoids vesting too much power in a single individual. This dates back to the Council of Jerusalem when it acted as a General Assembly where the Jerusalem church had several congregations which shared a presbyterial government. While autonomy of individual churches is maintained by a board of ruling elders, Presbyterian government still recognizes the New Testament model of interaction with other congregations as in the meeting of the Council of Jerusalem.

Do not rank them.
