House Bill 487, required by 2015-16 school year
Copy of language included in your materials
Districts create and adopt a district policy on
career advising for grades 6-12 no later than the
beginning of 2015-16 school year. Must be
worked on now to meet the deadline and the
requirements.
Once approved, your policy must be on your
school website and made publicly available to all
residents of the district.
Sample Advising Policies are offered by the ODE.

To achieve this, districts can use the FREE
resources on OhioMeansJobs.com and the student
backpack available for career advising in grades
6-12. Guided Tours, Tutorials, and Free School
Training for OhioMeansJobs.com are available on
the website and at your school site.

Document the career advising provided to each
student for review by the student, parents, and future
schools the student may attend. (Number 7 on bill).
OhioMeansJobs.com provides career advising
opportunities, and the district can choose to use the
work in a student’s backpack on OhioMeansJobs.com
to be documentation since this is digital and
accessible if a transferring parent or student requests
it.

Address special interventions for students in
need of remediation in math and English for
their transition from high school. This
information needs to be in the district’s career
advising policy.
This will be determined by the district.

Provide Student Success Plans for at-risk students.
Districts must provide an opportunity for a parent to
participate in developing the plan. If parents do not
participate, they are to be given a copy of the plan
and a statement on the importance of a high school
diploma and academic pathways.
Pathways are likely listed in the course offering
catalog, but districts need to verify.
