The varia on of plants in the provision of dif-ferent types, and the diff erence in width be-tween them creates a set of ribbons that break the modula on that is supposed to a building of this nature. Also lookout balcony element provides more dynamic image. Terrain features indicate that the fi rm is located at an eleva on of -3.00 meters so it is appropriate the idea of a basement car park building on the founda on level.

We have outdoor rooms for relaxing and con-nec ng people who pass by the Complex be-tween the ribbons and the room containers. It is supposed that so many students are going to be there for a year so It could be interes ng to relate to some people in order to improve their own life close to university

We have started from the small to larger, from housing to city.

Diff erent users of the building are required to work with a basic typology based on mini-mum standards for public housing. In addi- on to these minimum dimensions we estab-

lish a minimum room to comply to the user. The entry of natural light from the south, controlled by mobile elements by the user himself so in daylight hours is not required in the cost of electricity and furnishings fl exible to other uses such as space-folding study table or bed forming part of the ser-vice cabinet that houses the bathroom and the closet, are the basic minimum for work-ing or studying.

A “cabinet of study” is designed in order to have books and other tools of a college student. This model is implemented for dis-abled users in compliance with the minimum regula ons for accessibility.

The ground fl oor will depend on the com-bina on of modules chosen and, as men- oned above. It will accommodate other

more general uses, some of which may be used by non-residents: housing director, ad-ministra on, library and study rooms, gym, café, local hiring.

There are three typologies for single student, couple and couple with children. These are our elements to provide a fl exibility in the residen al programme.

Lightweight concrete panels form various mod-ules of the building. These panels will cover every fl oor its rooms making the ribbons. The “boxes” with the rooms are covered with a wooden skin in order to enpha ze the space between these boxes and the ribbon. This type of designs allows to combine several buildings with diff erent design to provide enclo-sures to get some space outdoors, with sunny and shadow zones. At this point we thought that it was desireable to found diff erent types of agroupa on to get diff erent types of enclo-sure outdoors.

This is a Growing Building because the demand of students that is increasing nowadays with some changes in their way of life. Transport, So-cial networks, on line homeworks and so. This could not be a closed building that is developed in only one way.

The aim is to make a proposal based in self con-struc on with the minimun of elements. A cover and a perimetral wall are going to defi ne a 10 x 10 meters house. A cross container with the fa-cili es of the house and the services for rooms distributes 4 zones of living.Bedrooms, Kitchen and living room have each one a part of pa o. The easier to plan the easiest to built.

Page 6: Personal Portfolio

PhD. PABLO ALLEN-VIZAN, Architect CV A roof supported by the par ons of the par-cel and the house brings the covered space of the house. The shadow draws the limits of the home but they are not visible so the inner space goes out across the shadow limits and mixes with the pa os. And the outer space comes into the house, It crosses those limits also. The skin is in glass.

Only the shadow makes diff erences between inner spaces and outer ones. The outer walls are cover with lime and they surround all the spaces so its texture is familiar in every corner of the house. The colour refl ects sunlight in order to put into the pavilion natural ligh ng and natural ven la on in every room. The roof gives fresh air in sunny me and gives the shelter from the sun rays. The windows of the kitchen and si ng room could be dismantled in order to get natural ven- la on across the house.

Building system is designed in order to develop the self construc on. That is the way to save a lot of money. The user becomes the manpower in the construc on process. So the neighbourhood can rent some of the ma-chinery to elaborate concrete to share in every house building and then they can get materials to put over the structure. It is easy to draw the house on the surface, dig the founda on and put blocks.

Across a sostenibility

We can locate server cells for the district and as-sign them to a number of people for supply. In the other hand the green areas are following the same criteria. We have got now a basic infl uence areas in the neighbourhood.

Each cell could provide with vegetables of their orchards to the neighbourhood. It would became an inner market supported by the market cells that have other types of elaborated products (bread, fi sh, meat, and so...)

At least we could have energy cells that they could catch solar radia on to convert it in elec-tricity andrainwater capta on to convert it in washing wa-ter or ge ng water from adequate places to de-pot itself. And what´s more, washing water in each house could be used to depot and irrigate each or-chard.

All of this systems would be planned and sup-ported by the local councils in order to develop an energy system for the neighbourhood with low cost of money.

As a ma er of fact here we got numbers that must be considered as tools for planning. They can change all those ra os and quotes in order to develop a system for each zone in the city.

Building of Applied Research Center in Valladolid, Spain.

Award: 3rd PRIZEType: Interna onal Architecture design

compe on.

This applied research building philosophy is to off er spin-off offi ces in the most fl exible way.

It is divided into four fl oors:

On the ground fl oor common areas that could func on independently if the rest of the build-ing was closed.

Research center in nutri on, food and nutri on. Located on the third fl oor.

Gene c tes ng and preven on of metabolic is located on the second fl oor. Development Cen-ter of the digital society of knowledge on the fi rst located on the fi rst one

The work modules associated with the centers also have an area per plant that is propor onal to the energy consumed by the centers.

The main feature of the management plan with this confi gura on is to divide the surface into modules so that they could be hired in associa- on of several.

Page 9: Personal Portfolio

The mobility would be en rely internal par on so that it can adapt almost instantaneously to the needs required by users.

Given the use of the building required to develop spaces where food crops and orchards to make sustainable the building in this area for research on nutri on and its rela on to food.

These gardens are part of a distribu on strategy occupying necessary modules so as to func on as light wells, ensuring natural ven la on and light-ing laboratories, offi ces or areas of course arises as the distribu on of spin-off laboratories.

All proposed centers are designed as open space to society, in which it could receive fi rst-hand the progress of the University, as they are ge ng im-provements in research and the services them-selves.

Since the posibility of building in the site is large we have a space to place a unique element to the building. It is a greenhouse with normal use of these spaces, double height located above the entrance corridor of the cloister and into the campus as a presenta on to the user and the vis-itor. Thus we get more natural products for nutri- on research center.

The planning for this site is based in connec- ons among work places, living places and

leisure places. The proposal is a housing con-nected with the bus Stop making a “mode inter-changer”, it means a container with bus-stop, train-sta on and park for cars that are going to get the highway to go to Helsinki or to the air-port. This zone of Vantaa already has a plann for developing a housing but Europan made a challenge to think about it twice.

To defi ne the diff erent typologies in the Dwell-ing, the start point must be clear. First of all, the space had to be empty, like a for-est (that is exactly what there was over there at the moment of the process). We got a green carpet with trees to be built over. But if we vi-brate that carpet we will realize that there will be folds wich provide room for services and shops, gyms and so. The houses would land on these folds, thin bars to get sun in every room.

Since this typology separates diff erent build-ings in the site, these ones will be located in order to allow people circulate among them. This proposal is making a “staple” between the future development of the city and the “inter-changer”.

The green carpet goes beyond the site crossing the highway to get to the connec ons.

Housing is very simple. An unique furniture element has the elements to defi ne the room when the user wants to use. The bedroom ap-pears only when we want it to use. The proce-dure is the same for the rest of furniture in the house so we have a lot of room to make diff er-ent works at home, ac vi es or whatever.

So if we have all the furniture hidden, what we have? . A room.

Building Restora on ( mber structure) and Rural Dwelling and Hotel (3 stard standart

class) in Celada de los Calderones, Cantabria, Spain.

Promote: Myscom Leisure, S.L.Date: 2011-In progress

A Tradi onal House that is going to become a Hotel with 3 stars class that It must have its original structure. We have subs tuted the bro-ken fl oors with steel beams to make a the fl oor under the rooms. It will be thin but well-isolat-ed to reduce every kind of noise in s type of building. The mber beams are seen from ev-ery room in the Hotel which it is a contrast with the beau ful landscape we can see through the windows all around, in Aalto Campoo Valley. Its proximity to Sky Sta on makes an interes ng rural enviroment to work with the rest of the building allowing modern language in several chapters in the project process.

Spain.

Promote: Myscom Leisure, S.L.Date: 2009/2012

A project based in a proposi on game. So it is a building based in several pieces. There is a space is between them for glass boxes to pass through the landscape, over the ground. In every piece there is diff erent rooms and a house for the hotel manager. Behind the Hotel we have a precious piece of Cantabria, one of the most beau ful zones in Spain.

The hotel is designed to come back to book a diff erent room than the fi rst me because there is no rooms with similar colour and furniture. One room one experience.

Page 16: Personal Portfolio

PhD. PABLO ALLEN-VIZAN, Architect CV

The diff erent pieces of the rooms are linked by a glass corridor which allows to contemplate the landscape in leisure mes.The colour of the façades will be noted on Win-ter season as abstract rocks.

The rooms have a hub furniture that it does not touch the ceiling, only a wall. It manages the room and defi nes the bedroom and the toi-le es. The wooden ceiling with mber beams give a diff erent scale in every room.

Build in one fold as a restaurant was the theme of this project to watch the sea from every point of the room. As a ma er of fact we have a crys-tal skin closing the fold as a bubble. This creates a double transparency between the street of the city and the seaside promenade next to this building.

The skin is the tool to solve the indor- outdoor cover of the fold as a con nuos wooden carpet . The structure had to be neutral to note the skins here.So the fl oor has bent to become a fold that has only one window to see the Anchor museum from inner.

The landscape is not interrrupted or broken when users get into the building and they book a table for dinner.

Page 19: Personal Portfolio

The restaurant needs an element to support the ac vity so there is a slate box that off ers a kitchen and the toile es. It works as a hub which ac vity starts from.

The simple structure of concrete roof and steel pillars make a con nuos space with sunligh ng every me but it is covered at least to make it more confortable.

This building is closely related to the park be-side it. It gives a law to make the gardening and the water fountain which has a public toile es under it.

An important ques on has to be noted at this point: It is very diffi cult to get the trees grow here because the sand. The wind moves it and this movement is like a bite for every plant.

“Los Patos” Square at Seaside in Salinas, Asturias, Spain.

Promote: Town Hall Administra on of Castrillón, Asturias, Spain.

Date: 2009

A li le Square beside the sea must be a fi lter between ci zens and landscape, and it has to be very slight to keep the site in the same func- ons as a mee ng point, leisure place or so.

This was a challenge. Whatever it was going to be made here would be going to interpose be-tween the two agents.

So there is no buildings, no gardens, no hits, no tricks, but only several types of pavement, like a strips of nature that includes the seaside in the city.

Permeability was secure in this way only

Professional architects must have a style to tell their projects to another people and basicly to themselves. Certainly, this kind of expression is moving all the me and not always it has been used to show a project. I have recently had a chance to overview the drawing collec on of Mies van der Rohe as a piece of my inves ga on (as a “tool “be er said) . They are delicious drawings for making a self explana on of a space in his building. But this was moving to became an important way to show his work in diff erent exhibi ons as a marke ng tool. As a ma er of fact he got lots of comissions because of those representa ons based on collages, and so.

This systems of visualisa on have used by architects to sell their work. Computer Assisted drawings have made our work easier but we must to see a li le danger on it. I think we cannot sit in front of a Pc to design a building or spaces in it. We should “write” with our hands how to get it and what is more, what we want to get with this project. We must to see it at fi rst. So we have to be able to draw with our own hand before computer aids. We will use it to sell ideas, making high defi ned pictures of a well known building designed by us. I think it should be as a Cinema Poster which it was made a er fi lming.

One architect, one hand, one style.

This is it. Sketching ideas should be mandatory to see before begin a project checking how that project has been moving inside an Architect´s mind. We could make an assessment of the process and the results in order to evaluate the coherency and the accurate decissions on it. We could recognize every author seeing only their drawings. All the architects should recognize Le Corbusier or Mies drawings. Figuring out them involves another work..

So It is very interes ng to see what an architect sees in a building when it has not been built yet to watch the process of an idea construc on.
