Personal Protective Equipment
COVID 19
Source Control First!
Direct patient to put on a face mask
Ask patient to perform hand hygiene
Goggles or face shield – eyeglasses do not count!
Mask/respirator and eye protection prevents coughs, sneezes, and sprays from entering our mucous membranes
Gown and gloves keep our hands and clothing clean so that we don’t later accidently bring germs into our eyes, nose and mouth
PPE with Goggles
PPE with Face shield
Face Shield
Surgical Mask (N95 respirator if
performing or assisting with aerosol-
generating procedures)
Gown – isolation or procedure gown
Gloves – standard exam gloves
• Donning should occur in a CLEAN space
• Gather necessary PPE equipment
• Hand sanitizer, trash bin
• Tie long hair back
• Secure hair away from face, eyes
• Secure eyeglasses so they do not slide
• Remove any jewelry that might be a hazard to your PPE
Considerations BEFORE Donning
Gathering PPE Supplies
• Use disposable patient care devices whenever possible – stethoscopes, BP cuffs
• Communication can be impaired in PPE! You may need to speak loudly to be
heard. Consider closed-loop communication (repeating back orders or requests)
or things like white boards to make communication easier

Doffing ProtocolsDoffing PPE – Gown with Gloves Together
A B C D E
Start with glove hygiene
1. Gloves and Gown together
1. Gown front and sleeves and the outside of gloves are contaminated!
2. If your hands get contaminated during gown or glove removal, immediately wash your hands or use
alcohol-based hand rub (ABHR)
3. Grasp the gown in the front and pull away from your body so that the ties break
• Only touch the outside of the gown with your gloved hands
4. While removing the gown, fold or roll the gown inside-out into the bundle
5. As you are removing the gown, peel off your gloves at the same time, only touch the inside of the gloves
and gown https://www.cdc.gov/hai/pdfs/ppe/PPE-Sequence.pdf
Doffing Sequence
Perform hand hygiene again next!
Doffing Sequence
Now face shield or eye protection
Doffing Sequence
Remove mask or respirator outside room or away from the patient
• Ask the patient if they need anything else before you begin doffing so you are not
tempted to hand them the TV remote or water pitcher after doffing
• Perform hand hygiene between each step
• Always finish doffing with hand hygiene – either ABHR or hand washing
• Do not touch your face, hair or eyeglasses until you have cleaned your hands
