Who?

• UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) is the centralized service that students use to apply to University.

• UCAS aren’t involved in the decision making. The applications are processed individually at each of the universities.

• Application Form and portfolios are sent to Admissions Staff at all five universities

• Processing time varies from one applicant to another. You will be sent an application number and booklet

• Subject tutors from each university will read your personal statements

• Remember: it is a real-life person who is reading your application form and viewing your portfolio.

• They will be reading lots of personal statements and yours should stand out for the right reasons.

Examples of what NOT to do:

• Using slang or colloquialisms (chatty language)

• Underestimating the skills you gain from part-time work

• Exaggerating

• Assuming that the reader knows about you

• Repeating information that is elsewhere on the form

e.g. predicted grades/ subjects studied

• Trying to include too much

• Plagiarism!| 26Presentation title

Reasons for unsuccessful applications

• Your personal statement does not strongly support your desire to study your chosen degree

• Your personal statement did not show sufficient understanding, relevance or knowledge about the course you are applying for

• You failed to demonstrate sufficient knowledge and interest in the subject in your personal statement

• There is a lot of competition for places on this course and your personal statement and experience was not as strong as other applicants this year

• Application form (including personal statement, reference and predicted grades) does not evidence accurate understanding of or motivation for subject

Slide 7 – 3 minutes Go through the timeline and make sure to explain the following: To put clearing into context, give overview of whole UCAS timeline. Confirmation – Results day The confirmation process starts early in July as students start to receive the results of the qualifications they have been taking. The early results include BTEC courses, IB (International Baccalaureate) and European qualifications but the majority of qualifications are A levels which are only released to universities on Saturday 9th August.   For students A-level results are available from their school and colleges via a number of processes e.g. post, pick up from school, the web etc. The timescales for results will be dependent on each individual school and their processes.   University confirmation decisions will go live on UCAS Track for applicants to view on the morning of Thursday 14th August, usually about 7 or 8 am.   There are different scenarios for confirmation: Student has achieved or exceeded offer conditions of firm choice – student automatically has place with firm choice. Student has not achieved offer conditions of firm choice – it is up to the university to accept or reject. a) accept – student has place with firm choice b) reject – student is referred to insurance choice (if available). student meets conditions of insurance choice – automatically has place with insurance choice. student does not meet conditions of insurance choice – it is up to the insurance choice to accept or reject. If rejected – student enters clearing.
