By Amelia Monroe CarlsonBrothers, sons, husbands,

sisters, daughters and mothers have left a trail of sacrifi cial service throughout the generations while wearing this nation’s uniform. No matter if the emblem displays Army, Navy, Air Force or Marines, each individual behind the patch was someone’s loved one…and still is today. Many families have long lines of those who have served in various wars, during various international confl icts and have given a portion of their lives to this nation and its causes. The Lambert family of Silerton is no exception when it comes to a family tree of heroes.

Out of seven brothers and two grandsons who all joined the military, the Lamberts saw fi ve of their own serve in wars ranging from WWII, Korea and Vietnam. Although some only received a 10th grade education while others continued on with school and graduated, they all held true to patriotism by serving in the military.

“John (Lambert) was the fi rst to graduate high school in the family and he graduated from Bolivar in 1960,” said Larry Lambert, grandson, who served with the 25th Infantry Division in Vietnam.

Cleo Lambert (PFC), brother, served with the Army in the 7th Infantry Division in WWII. He was the fi rst of two family

members to receive the Bronze Star. He also was the recipient of the Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacifi c Medal, Army of Occupation (Japan) Medal, Philippines

and Okinawa Liberation Medal and Ruptured Duck (crossing the equator) Medal. He served from 1944-1946.

His brother, Lindbergh Lambert (PFC), served in the Army from 1952-1954 with the 2nd Infantry Division during the

Korean War. He received the Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Medal, Korean Service Medal, National Defense Medal, United National Korean Service Medal, US Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation.

Cleo and Lindbergh’s brothers; Bobby, John and Frankie, also served in the military but were not deployed to war.

“John was a medic in California,” said Larry. “The two youngest brothers, Frankie and Leo, are the only ones left now.”

Larry Lambert (SP5), grandson, served in the 25th Infantry Division with the Army during Vietnam.

“You know the movie Platoon, that movie is about our unit,” said Larry.

Larry was the second in the family to receive the Bronze Star. He also was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry Medal and the US Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon.

“I was at a Fire Base called Dau Tieng. It was about 75 miles northwest of the Cambodian Border. It was in one corner of the area called the ‘Iron Triangle’,” said Larry. “We received rocket, mortar and sniper attacks almost daily. The rockets were the worst because you could hear them whistling seven seconds before they hit and you did not know where.”

For his last eight months of his tour in Vietnam, Larry became the Battalion Casualty Clerk.

“It was my responsibility to check all wounded and

KIAs for our unit. I had to write up a report on their wounds and a location where the soldiers were sent,” said Larry. “I cannot begin to guess how many wounded and KIAs I saw. I can only remember a couple of names. They are all just a jumble of nightmares.”

One year after Larry began his service with the Army, while he was in Vietnam, his uncle Leo Lambert (SP4) began his service with the Army in 1967 with the 1st Logistical Command. Leo received the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and US Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon.

Richard Lambert, grandson in the family, drifted a bit from his family heritage of Army soldiers and became an airman with the United States Air Force in 1971. He served from 1971-1975 during Vietnam, Thailand and Japan. He received the National Defense Service Medal.

For generations this nation has provided the best in fi ghting forces around the globe. For many families, it has become a family legacy to serve in the military. No matter if they are drafted or voluntarily enlist, families choose to serve this nation…and to sacrifi ce. For the Lambert family, patriotism and heroism runs thick through the family tree.

is the first to admit the Air Force is not for everyone, but for nine years, military service has been the perfect fit for him. Murphy grew up in Whiteville before mov-ing to Buffalo, New York.

“I left Tennessee when I was 16 to move to Buffalo after I got into some trou-ble,” said Murphy. “I worked hard and ended up graduating on time in 2005 in the top 10 of my class.”

Murphy turned 18 in July 2005 and left for the Air Force in August that same year. During his military career, he has been deployed four times; serving in Afghanistan, United Arab of Emirates, Iraq and Afghanistan. Murphy has

been stationed at OSAN Air Base, Republic of Korea for the past two years.

In July, Murphy was rec-ognized as an Airman Spotlight Award winner, which is a weekly award presented to select airman,

who serve at the OSAN Air Base.

The award is just one of the many accomplishments Murphy has achieved dur-ing his years in the military. Moments like that make him appreciate immediate

and extended family.“My grandfather (Jessie

Murphy, deceased) and grandmother, Geneva Murphy, have always been my biggest role models. They took two young chil-dren, my sister Janet and me, who were in a bad situ-ation, into their home and raised us as their own. I will forever be grateful to them,” said Murphy, who noted other family members that still live in Hardeman County, like his sister Jhanaid Murphy.

Murphy has also learned valuable lessons from serv-ing in the military.

“Integrity first: If you do what is right even when no one is watching, it will always come back to you; service before self: The

military is a business and you have to look at it like that sometimes where you have to put the needs of the Air Force before your own; and excellence in all I do: If I always do the very best I can, then I believe every-thing will turn out for the better,” said Murphy.

So far, everything has turned out for the better and Murphy is looking forward to many more years of ser-vice.

“I plan to retire after 22 years of service. I hit nine years a few months ago, so I have time left to make my mark in the Air Force,” said Murphy, who understands the military is not a job, but a lifestyle.”

Murphy has never been married and has no chil-

dren, but looks forward to what the future holds. He is also making plans for when he does retire from the ser-vice.

“There are a huge array of things I can do like pur-sue anything in the criminal justice field, along with Air Base Defense, corrections and as a military weapons instructor," said Murphy, who is also leaving his options open to pursue a loved hobby. “I can cook almost anything if you give me a couple of tries, so I am also considering opening a food truck.”

Murphy will attend Recruiter School in March 2015, after leaving Korea, and may be recruiting in or around the West Tennessee area.

Staff Sgt. Jamie Murphy named Airman Spotlight Award winner

Staff Sgt. Jamie Murphy was named Airman Spotlight Award winner in July. Murphy, who is currently sta-tioned at OSAN Air Base, Republic of Korea has been serving in the Air Force since 2005.

2000 - 2012

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in the First World War, then known as “the Great War.” C o m m e m o r a t e d as Armistice Day beginning the following year, November 11th became a legal federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became Veterans Day, a holiday dedicated to American veterans of all wars.
