Personal Strategic Plan ProjectWartburg CollegeAnthony Cetera
Authors Note:This is a personal strategic plan in which is completed as part of an assignment
for the course of Principles of Management BA 345.While focusing on developing a
personal strategic plan for strengthening plans for my future, this was completed during
the winter term of 2016 under instruction of Dr. Alan Bernard.
Mankind has always strived to create, and persevere. With work ethics, and leadership
qualities this can be a goal achieved by anybody. With previous work experience in the realms of
sports, I hope to one day achieve success through sports marketing in a professional organization
close to home. I hope to one day to work successfully in either a sports marketer for the Chicago
Bulls or work in sales in a company that works with professional sports advertising in which
handles sales to big end companies as well as sports organizations such as NBA, NHL, FIFA,
and the NFL.
After choosing to proceed in a career field that revolves around the sports
marketing/management career field it is necessary to have some sort of experience within the
sports world. Choosing this career option for myself wasn’t an easy option however I choose this
goal to work for a successful organization such as the Bulls, because I have experience within
sports marketing as well as the desire to work for an organization I grew up loving. Reasons also
for getting involved with sports marketing organizations outside of the Chicago Bulls would be
through previous work experience working for a professional soccer organization as well as
playing through the youth academy of that same professional organization. With a lot of
networking as well as other components in order to find a job in this realm it can possibly be
done.
With lastly observing, and having to earn more work experience within this field a
strategic way into maintaining this career would be getting involved with management at any
level or having experience through sales. With previous work experience in a company called
TGI Systems I experienced a lot of high paced actions while dealing with clients. This can
hopefully be similar to what is expected within this career field. “Marketing representatives and
event coordinators deal with a never-ending stream of requests from sponsors and clients. A
quick mind, a personable attitude, and a good deal of energy are necessary to keep up with all the
work”(Wake Forest,2015).This can hopefully be similar to what is expected within this career
field. Another way to help maintain a solid path down this career is by coming up with new ideas
as well as problem solving, and coming up with solutions. “Part of becoming successful in a
sports marketing environment comes deeply with problem solving. How fast you can come up
with ideas to make things better for not only short term however long term” (Fidel, 2015). By
coming up with solutions for this career it can make things easier, and lead to ways into being
hired into this career. Lastly a large part into this career is being able to be managing live events
where promotions are seen on television. “It's the playoffs. L.A. versus Detroit. Whether you're
watching the game on television, or sitting directly courtside, there's probably one thing you couldn't help
but notice--lots and lots of ads”( Hegelman, 2013). This example is what can be used with management
experience so live events can be monitored as well as things can be in the overall set up without any
problems. In order to reach my goal in becoming a sports marketer for a professional organization I will
need to be able to learn some of these examples for the workplace, and to help improve, and better what is
expected from this career.
Mission Statement:
My core purpose is to enrich the event experience through marketing, and creative
visual branding.
Values:
Listed below are some core values believed to have success in this particular career
field. These values listed below are believed to better the company's success, and
create a healthy work environment for managers, and employees.
1. Collaborate as a group; do great things together
2. Be innovative find a new way to make sales to a customer
3. Each employee have an impact
4. No person is bigger than the company; no athlete or franchise either
5. Leadership by example to clients, and co workers
Within sales, as well as an event manager these particular value can lead to success by
working as a unit. No employee within the sports marketing world is greater than the
team. While working within sports the team concept applies to the business side as well.
While working together towards a common goal employee’s will have the same idea
that the athletes have which is reaching towards that common goal, which is to be
successful in business side of things as well as build a championship atmosphere. Not
one person is bigger than the company which applies towards franchises as well as
athletes. By being creative this gives employees the option to come up with creative
ways to make the company better. By focusing on leadership qualities this will tie in
those who are stragglers. Leaders will bring the company together as well as lead by
example to new employees.
Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities Threats
Vocal, willing to speak up without being told to
Lack of leadership qualities
Education Quality Tough competition within the career or field being pursued
Knowledgeable within professional sports
Sensitivity Interactions and relationships with Co Workers
Competitive industry to get into
Being able to work well together with others
Procrastination Helping generate revenue in sales in a good economy
bad economy
High work ethic Over talkative Understanding new technology
Companies networking with competitors
Attention to details impatience
Strengths:
By being a vocal leader and willing to speak without being told this can help the
company have employees who are not afraid or shying away with being interactive with
clients as well as customers. By being knowledgeable within professional sports and
being involved with professional sports organizations as a kid this can help benefit me in
finding a job. By playing for youth professional organizations it helps understand all
angles of professional sports by seeing it at such a young age. I believe by playing
sports, and other clubs will help benefit in being able to work with someone to help find
a common goal. Having a high work ethic is always a positive for any employer. Having
somebody who is willing to go the extra mile will be a benefit with finding a job within the
sports marketing side. By paying close attention to detail this can help benefit me in
which shows that I will do the job right.
Weaknesses:
Having the lack of leadership qualities can be harmful in finding a job in this market.
Employers want employees who lead by example, and this can be hard to find a job. By
being over sensitive to harsh criticism at times this can be a negative in which
employers want employees who seem to have a backbone in this industry.
Procrastination is one of the largest weaknesses due to putting everything off to the last
second. That being said it means quality isn't necessarily up there compared to a well-
structured well organized approach. Over talking can be negative in working in the
sports marketing industry because clients do not really want to engage, and take extra
time especially with event marketing. Being impatient can be a negative primarily due to
the fact that work can be slow at times, and being impatient can lead to stubbornness
within the work field.
Opportunities:
Education can help lead to better opportunities within this work field. By having more
education it can bring more creative ideas into finding solutions. By interacting with
coworkers or employers this can be an opportunity by helping generate better
networking, and can possibly open doors into finding better jobs. By having a good
economy this can create more opportunities in which can help have more creative ways
to approach ideas. It also opens up more doors in finding ways to even better the
company. New technology can help teach as well as help well me in this work
environment.
Threats:
Tough competition in this career can slow up the process in finding a job. Sports
management is a really competitive market in which is most likely going to delay finding
a job within this career field. With a bad economy and a competitive market finding a job
will even be more difficult, and can delay finding a job in this market. This career
primarily finds employees within networking. By knowing somebody this can be harder
in finding a job you are just or even more as qualified.
Trends in this career:
In this market some trends that tend to create opportunities in this market is success in
teams that differ over seasons. For example the marketing Golden State Warriors have
experienced within the last two years have doubled compared to when they were not as
successful. Some trends that can hinder the growth of this career can be popularity
within the selected sport. For example in the United States a growing sport is soccer,
with this career growing more jobs and opportunities will be open in this career. Some
strengths that will help me take advantage of this career is by already having a lot of
experience within professional sports. By being involved in professional sports since a
kid, and having internships that pertain to marketing within professional sports will help
me overcome competitors. Lastly in order to find a job within this career path I must first
approach some weaknesses. The weakness I can work on that will help better me in
this career path would be becoming a better leader. With developing leadership
qualities this will help me reach my potential in what employers want.
Strategy:
In order to maintain, and reach this successful goal a 3-5 year implemented plan must
be built up in order to find a dream job. Over this course of time a 5 step process must
be in place in order to reach this goal.
1. Graduate with a bachelor of arts degree in Business Administration with
concentration in Sports Management (pre work 4 years)
2. Work an internship within Sports marketing gain experience within the field (1
year)
3. Build relationships with employers, clients, co-workers to help network your
future. (1-2 years)
4. Move up in your position within the workplace gain experience at higher positions
managing, sales rep, and Event Manager. (2-3 years)
5. Experience within higher positions will build experience, and lead to head in
sales/ advertising event overseer. (Goal)
In order to reach these goals these 5 steps must be in place in order to maintain that
goal. At first you must graduate with a college degree in order to put yourself in this
situation for the job. Like any other job in this field you must work an internship, before
having a job in this field in order to learn about the company, and how things work from
top to bottom. By working your way up the employment pyramid relationships will be
built, and credibility for work ethic will be noticed by higher management. By maintaining
a higher position within the company you must prove to employers you can live up to
the work that is being presented in order to find your dream job. With more years of
experience within a higher position employers within the business, and employers at
other companies will notice your experience that success will bring you over a course of
time. After all these steps in working towards that goal, my goal hopefully will be
reached after experience over a set course of time.
Part 3
The main support group for this plan will be preferably marketing majors who
specialize in advertising within professional sports. They will be responsible for taking
care of sales towards large firms who are willing to sell their advertising rights to the
company in order to promote their company during a sporting event. In order to be
successful we must split up teams who specialize in certain aspects. We will split up
people who primarily focus on sales. Then we will have other people split into a section
in which they will focus on game day preparations as, and event managers. We will
focus on the payment towards those pitching the sales because those who are event
managers aren’t really making the high profit for the company rather than just make
sure the company stays, and looks professional. However those who deal with clients
will have to keep the professional integrity of the company, and not focus on telling the
clients how to do their jobs. Focus on having a warehouse for storage of products.
Everybody will work a normal 8-5 work day however those who are event managers will
work longer till everything is set up on event day, and till everything is taken down.
Everybody should be paid in full salary. However sales can earn more through
commission. The team approach should be beneficial on event day where we must all
work together to make everything seem and look professional for media, organization
clients (NBA, NHL, FIFA), and fans.
Leading:
The motivation others will help motivate myself, and the company as a whole will
be incentives such as great work as a team with a constructive leader, as well as getting
the job done right with positive feedback, and also working together with everybody to
earn more success, and expand as a team. Some internal motivation that will keep me
on track will be the thought of anybody can replace, as well as you can always go up
with hard work, and guidance. The type of leader I would like to be would be a
Democratic leader with some autocratic ideals. With focusing on teamwork to maintain
the common goal I firmly believe you should share both ideas to be a good manager. In
order to gain respect from employees the democratic leadership ideas should be
applied however what you say goes. The boss should have his own authority when it
comes down to it. Being responsible for everybody is part of being the boss so having
authority to keep everybody in line means you should apply both ideas. This is
important to me primarily, because in order to be successful you cannot finish a job or
do things by yourself. You need a proper team around to build for success. With being
the leader you can organize ways to be successful, and share some diversity when it
comes to ideas. With that being said when its game time decisions as well as thing you
need to do in order to make the company successful you have to take action on your
own without any guidance, if you think it's beneficial to being successful.
Part 4
Stated below in appendix A is the graph for the Balance Work Card plan for this
part of the strategic plan. In order to stay intact with these Balance Work cards you must
check the progression of how things are going. If the company continues to improve on
all these aspects then maintaining it will be needed less. To stay on the right track for
this part you have to look at each individual part separately over a period of time. If
something isn’t going right in a certain part then improvements must be made. If it
means to fire somebody in order to meet these objectives then it must be done. A
specific time frame to check on these would be weekly. However if there is more
progress in this than it will drop to a monthly period in which is only given if there are
good improvements, and all these requirements have been met.
Adjustments for all of these will be made over at least a year's’ time if everything
is improving, and employees seem to understand what is expected. However it can also
change rapidly if there is a decrease in everything that is needed as well as something
that might need to be improved on that causes these decreases. Adjustments that might
change over time would be ways that improve internally as a company as well as ways
to learn and grow as a company. Ways that can possibly be an outcome for improving
internally would be through finding ways to improve employee productivity. Ways that
can improve learning, and growth are possibly through techniques to improve in
whatever is needed in the company.
