The Options Dialog in TOADData Grids - Visual

Highlights:

• This page allows you to define the look and feel of the data grids used within TOAD. There are a lot of options and features built into the Dev Express grid component.

• One of the best features, I think, is the excel style filtering.

• Most of the options on this page I have left to the default settings. However, the one that I did change was that I like toknow if my fields are null or not. So I turn on the display of null columns as yellow.

Highlights:

• Execute queries in threads (Creates a separate session). This is handy and can also be a gotcha item. Watch out for this one when using temporary tables. When checked, Toad will create a separate session specifically to execute queries. A new session will be created for each query being run from the SQL Editor, Schema Browser, or Object Search window. The default is checked.

• Commit after every statement – This one is another personal choice.

They provide some default syntax layouts and have added the ability for you to manage these files and add your own. The selected editor parser files will determine which languages will be supported for syntax highlighting and distinct editor settings.

•The grid displays the language supported and then the pathname of the parser script file.

The Options Dialog in TOADProcedure Editor – File Splitting

Highlights:

File splitting was designed to accommodate users with multiple PL/SQL objects in a single file. This feature lets you load multiple objects from one file and save package specs and bodies to one file.

•When a file is loaded, the procedure editor checks to see whether more than one PL/SQL object is created in the file. If so, the procedure editor takes action depending upon which of the options listed below is set.

•The default is Prompt to split files.

Highlights:

TOAD provides you with the ability to create your own code templates for use within the Procedure Editor. When creating new objects (functions, procedures, packages, triggers, types, etc.), TOAD allows you to choose what the template to use to create the selected object type. This provides you with the ability to change the templates to your own coding style.

The Options Dialog in TOADSQL Editor – Make Code

The SQL Editor window contains two functions that simplify copying SQL statements from Toad to code development tools such as Delphi, VB, C++, Java, or Perl, and from those code development tools back to Toad. The functions are called Strip Code Statement (<CTRL>P) and Make Code Statement (<CTRL>M), available from the SQL Editor menu.

• Strip Code Statement

• Strips off the code development tool syntax from the SQL statement, ready to execute in Toad.

• Make Code Statement

• Adds the code development tool syntax to the SQL statement in the SQL Editor and makes it ready to paste into the development tool code.

• The setup page allows you to choose your development environment template type, customize it, or create your own from scratch. Examples are in the TOAD help documentation.

The Options Dialog in TOADSQL Editor – SQL Recall

Highlights for SQL Statement HistoryMax # of SQL statements to save - This box lets you enter a custom number of SQL statements to save to your Recall Previous SQL list. This list is saved to and retrieved from the SQLS.DAT file. Only the mostrecently used SQL statements are saved. The default is 100 and the maximum is 999. I always set it to the max!

Save only statements that are valid - If this option is checked, Toad will only save the SQL statements that ran successfully, for recall by F8 SQL Statement Recall dialog box. The default is checked. I normally turn this off and use the write to disk prior to execution.

Write saved SQL statements to disk prior to statement execution - If checked, Toad saves the SQL statement before executing it, in case something happens during the execution. If this option is checked, the Save only statements that are valid option will not apply. I prefer this option.

Play Toad Wave File – Cute the first time, annoying after that.

Show login window – Allows you to determine if the login box displays.

Show Splash Screen – Normally, I turn this off. One less item to look at.

Allow multiple copies of TOAD to be opened – I set this to checked.

File To AutoLoad on startup – Allows a user to identify a file that will automatically be loaded into the first SQL Editor window that appears after a database Login. Click to choose a file.

File to AutoExecute on new connections - This lets you set application info upon startup. The selected script file will execute after each new connection and the output displays after the normal "do you want to see output" prompt.

Configurations

Toad comes with several options for configuring your toolbars. These are configurations to the toolbars and menu bars only. All of the commands for the version you have purchased are available for you to add to them. These configurations merely provide a convenient starting place for different roles. User default, Toad default (all items), Developer, Business Analyst, DBA (full menus)

Toad also allows you to define the look and feel for the tool bars as well if they are moveable or docked and locked.

For pinned windows, you have the ability to select if they roll out from the side or not as well on how fast they slide.
