The 2016/2017 SPE-Piedmont Coastal Section year is beginning and I would like to welcome everyone back. My name is Leon Suttles and I have the privilege of serving another term as President of our section. I am looking forward to working with the great Board of Directors we have this year. During our summer planning meeting we identified a number of interesting tour opportunities. A tentative calendar is included in the newsletter. Updates will be made throughout the year as we finalize details and confirm tours. Last year was very successful for the Piedmont-Coastal section. We earned the Pinnacle Award (Gold) from the national SPE office. We also enjoyed growth in membership and increased participation at monthly meetings. I want to thank all of our members for helping us to accomplish that. One of my goals for the year is to see that continue. I ask that you please help us by identifying potential new members and interesting locations for monthly meetings.

Our first meeting will be on September 13 and it will be a tour of the Becton Dickinson (BD) research facility located at 21 Davis Drive in Research Triangle Park. The tour will include an overview presentation of BD, BD Technologies and the Computer Aided Engineering Department. Then we will tour their Advanced Prototyping Lab featuring state of the art 3D modeling. Should prove to be very interesting.

I have a major goal for the next year to see more participation and interaction with students and young professionals. We have great opportunities for our young professionals to learn valuable leadership skills within our organization. Our meetings are a great place for networking with professionals who have been in the plastics industry for many years.

Thank you all for supporting our chapter.Leon SuttlesPresident Piedmont-Coastal S71 SPE

A New Era in HealthcareIn 1897, Maxwell Becton and Fairleigh Dickinson founded Becton, Dickinson and Company with a vision to improve outcomes for patients. For the century that followed, the company held true to that vision. BD diversified into diag-nostics, biosciences and a wide range of medical devices. But we knew we could do more and have an even greater impact on the world of health.

Enter CareFusion in 2015. The complementary nature of BD and CareFusion capabilities make the new, combined company more relevant than ever before. It’s not just the solutions we offer, it’s also where we offer them. The global reach of the combined company can offer new solu-tions around the world. And that’s just what we’re doing.

The combination also brings together the people in each company. People with a deep passion for helping patients directly or through our other customers. And the com-bined company gives us even more opportunities to help people. BD is the place for our associates to pursue their life’s purpose through their life’s work.

And we are bringing in the “new.” New ideas for products. New solutions for customers. New ways to help patients be healthy and safe. In other words, a new era in healthcare.

Meeting was adjourned at 7:50pmRespectfully submitted,Dan Fuccella,Secretary, SPE Piedmont-Coastal SectionJune 18, 2016

From SPE HQ:Unlike other societies, SPE has not increased its member dues in nearly a decade. Not surprisingly our membership ‘price’ is at the low end of the market. Our member dues re-main our largest source of income and provide much needed support for new programs. Accordingly, it was decided to increase the yearly dues to $155 for new and renewing members. Those memberships which expire in the next few months will still have the opportunity to renew at the current rates before the new rate comes into effect on 1/1/2017. We ask your help to inform your members about this pending change.
