Firstly, the school is pleased to welcome Alisha Watkins as the Class 1 teacher next year. Alisha is a former student of PWS in the 1990s and early 2000s and has a great love of the arts, literature and hand work. She will bring her passion for Steiner education back to PWS from Tasmania where she is currently living. Kindy 6 parents and guardians as well as the children will have the pleasure of meeting with Alisha next term. Secondly, the school is pleased to welcome Phoebe Phillips as the Class 6 teacher next year. Phoebe is a former student of PWS and has been a relief teacher at the school this year. Having studied in Sweden, Switzerland and the Netherlands Phoebe looks forward to bringing her interest in European history into the Ancient Rome main lesson of Class 6. Phoebe has recently been doing special projects working under the guidance of Aboriginal elders Dr Richard Walley OAM and Dr Noel Nannup OAM. This has enriched her knowledge of our incredible Aboriginal history which she looks forward to integrating into our Astronomy, Geography and Geology main lessons. The reason the rule is so effective is because it taps into a powerful truth: emotional pain isn’t caused by external events that are beyond our control it is caused by our responses. MICHAEL FESTIVAL Wednesday, 25th September

Parents please make a note on your calendars that our celebration of the Michael Festival by our Primary School is

coming up on Wednesday, 25th September (next week!) from 12:10pm on the Small Oval, then 12:30pm-3:00pm on the Large Oval.

The Michael Festival is above all a festival of will; a festival to awaken consciousness of the struggle between Michael and the Dragon. The legendary picture of Michael fighting the dragon provides us with hope and inspiration in overcoming the limitations of our own lower natures. Through courage and steadfastness in spiritual striving; through inner work and outer deeds which resolve on the good, we can support the work of Michael in freedom. Our thoughts and deeds have consequences which help or hinder the work of Michael in the Spiritual World. As the guiding spirit of our time, Michael is concerned with human freedom and moral responsibility. The Primary and High School festival activities and games at the Perth Waldorf School are planned and enacted to encourage imagination, initiative and co-operation; so enabling the children to walk some way towards Michael. Preparations are underway for this festival of courage, challenge and team work, with the Class 7 children and their teams busily designing team banners in a lovely afternoon of co-operative working together yesterday. On Wednesday, 25th September we have the opportunity as parents, to support their endeavours and witness their striving. This is the time when active help by you, the parents, is needed and gratefully accepted by the co-ordinator of this day, Sarah Boyle, and indeed the whole teaching staff. There are several ways in which you can help:

1. SET UP TEAM - a minimum of 5 parents are needed at 8:45am on the day - this should take about an hour. Please meet Sarah at the Canteen. Coffee provided after set up!

2. GAME HELPERS - 5 parents for each primary class are needed to ensure the activities and children are properly supported. Please meet in the Plaza at 11:30am for instructions, tea and coffee!

3. ANZAC BISCUITS - each Primary and High School class needs at least 60 Anzac biscuits baked. See Anzac biscuit recipe below. Could Primary families deliver biscuits on the day to the table next to the Canteen blackboard in a sealed container (to protect from the crows!); High School biscuits to classrooms. The P&F provides juice for all students.

If you feel up to the challenge of offering your help please text Sarah Boyle on 0414 827 787 or contact your Class Carer. If you are able to make Anzacs please inform your Class Carer. THANK YOU! We look forward to seeing you there! Sarah Boyle - Festival Co-ordinator

EARLY CHILDHOOD

FROM THE COORDINATOR A big thank you to the wonderful Lindy Frayne who shared one of her passions with us: natural dying. First we placed our leaves on some pure white wool felt and folded the felt with each layer being covered in leaves. The felt was then wrapped around a rod, bound tightly then placed in a pot of boiling water on the fire. Many hours later and after it had cooled the masterpiece was unraveled. There was then lots of sewing involved as the children then turned the felt into collecting bags for our bush walks. Thank you Lindy for sharing one of your talents with us. Love Jo and the Jarrah Miahs.

CLASS 7 KULBARDI PLAY The Greening… and the Blooming.

September 17th (today, if you are reading this on Tuesday) is the Feast Day of Saint Hildegard of Bingen. Of special significance this year is that it marks the passage of 840 years since her death. Hildegard was a person of incredible energy, courage and creativity. As well as running a convent, Hildegard was a poet, composer, playwright, natural scientist, healer, visionary, artist and social reformer. This is all the more remarkable because she was a woman in the very male-dominated Europe of 12th century. Last week Class 7 Kulbardi staged five performances of a play inspired by Hildegard’s life. Her biography had formed part of our studies of the Middle Ages earlier in the year. Through some very fine acting the children were able to bring to life episodes of her life and remarkable relationships. Excerpts of Hildegard’s writings, music and artwork were embedded throughout the play. Hildegard was a woman years ahead of her times, and her contribution to the world is still relevant today. I would like to thank all those who helped bring this play together. Thank you to the parents who helped with ironing, washing, photography, filming, lighting and providing greenery. Thank you to Titus for making the crosses used, and to Evelyn for helping with learning the German song. Many thanks to Paul for helping us master the challenging and exquisite music of Hildegard. And a massive thank you to Sarah, who contributed so much to the performances, from constructing the set through to helping the actors develop greater expression and creating stunning costumes for the play. Finally, I would like to thank the children for the way they stepped up to the challenge and brought the fascinating characters and events of 900 years ago to life. There were over 50 character parts (plus musicians) in the play, and with only 27 children that was a lot of complexity to carry and perform. I was so proud of the way they were able to do this and so touched by their commitment to the venture. The greatest complement I could give is that for me the spirit of Hildegard was there in the room with us at each performance.
