PERTH WHITE WATER PARK UP‐DATE February 2013 So much has been happening with the sport of Canoe Slalom that Canoeing Western Australia thought it best to give you an update. We all remember the incredible slow motion high-resolution footage of the canoe slalom events at the London Olympics. What an incredible sport! Did you know Robin Jeffery and Kynan Mayley come from Perth? Both started their international careers in their early teens, representing Australia at Junior World Championship events. But London was their first Olympic Games, a double for Kynan who competed in the C1 and C2 classes. Photos Left: Kynan Maley, C1 Right: Kynan Maley and Robin Jeffery, C2 (photos courtesy Sportscene TV) Every year the sport has it’s National Championships along with National Schools Championships, hosted in rotation by NSW, Victoria and Tasmania. Western Australia has not been host since the Harvey International Slalom Course in Harvey was lost to the sport in 1998 when Water Corporation revoked rights to the use of the water, with promises of compensation unfulfilled to date. This year the championships were held in Eildon, Victoria. WA took the shield as the winning state for the first time in over twenty years. Twenty-eight paddlers represented WA, ranging in age from 9 to 63 years. Olympians, Robin Jeffery (2012) and Zlatan Ibrahimbegovic (1972), coached the team – and competed themselves. Thirteen WA junior athletes were selected to the National Talent Squad for 2013, administered by Australian Canoeing, with WA now the dominant state in the Squad – our future Olympians perhaps. And this is in spite of limited whitewater – due to the drought only one event (out of eight scheduled races) was held at Walyunga (near Bullsbrook) in 2012. Thankfully some outflows from Wellington Dam in Collie enabled training. But to develop to elite level in the sport at present means relocating to the east coast to train at the Penrith White Water Stadium. Wouldn’t it be great to keep them here and attract others!
