Words of Wisdom from Rev Julia Cody..........“All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small, all things wise and wonderful the Lord God made them all”- the chorus of one of the most popular hymns. When I ask people if they have a favourite hymn they’d like sung at a baptism, wedding, or even a funeral, it's top of the list. People speak about knowing it from school, and liking it because it’s cheerful. But I wonder if you’ve ever considered the words? The lyrics speak of the beauty of creation - of pleasant summer sun, ripe fruits, purple-headed mountains, rivers, and sunsets; and then praise God who made them all. Over the summer, we’ve spent time in Devon and Wales, and on a number of occasions, as we rounded a corner, or caught a glimpse through a gap in a hedge, we were greeted by incredible views. It was great to have time to stop and simply take in the beauty of creation, to give thanks to God for the stunning world in which we live. The Church is joining with St George’s vets to give thanks for creation in a different way – on Saturday 13th September, 3pm, we’re having a Pet Service. We’ll gather for readings, hymns and prayers. All animals are welcome, or please bring photos of any who can’t be with us, including those who’ve died, as we’ll give thanks for them. There’ll be refreshments afterwards. Please come and join us.

The Immigration Act – Your Questions Answered; As a landlord, one clear advantage of letting your property through a

reputable agent is that you are kept up-to-date with any changes in the law relating to your tenancy agreement. With effect from October this year, any landlord who does not check whether their tenants have the right to live in the UK may be fined. This new law applies to a broad range of property owners, but notably to any landlord entering into a ‘residential tenancy agreement’I’m a landlord, what should I do now? As a landlord you should ensure the following:- Properly check the immigration status of any tenant and additional occupants of your rented properties before entering into a tenancy agreement. When their right to live in the UK is only temporary, always carry out further checks after that permission expires. We would also recommend the following if you are working with a lettings agent:- Read through the small print of your agreement with your letting agent. You should ensure that your lettings agent cannot claim reimbursement of any fines imposed for their failure to carry out proper checks. If in doubt, ask. Check the reputation and background of any lettings agent you work with, ask to see files and evidence of their practice. What fines could be imposed on landlords who fail to carry out appropriate checks? Landlords (or lettings agents) who fail to carry out necessary checks or knowingly let their property to an individual who does not have permission to live in the UK may be fined up to £3,000 per tenant.Landlords who rent their properties through us can be assured that we will comply with all aspects of the Immigration Act and carry out comprehensive checks on all of our tenants. If you have any questions regarding the above or need property advice please do not hesitate to call Redstones on 01902 504455

A Word From Your MP............... It is always an extremely scary and emotional time for a patient

when they are diagnosed with a disease. Many patients and their carers feel very vulnerable after their initial diagnosis, which is why our community support groups are so important to reassure patients that there is a support network there for them.Three million people in the UK are diagnosed with diabetes, with seven million more deemed to be at risk of the disease. The period following a diabetic’s diagnosis can often be daunting and confusing, which is why groups such as Perton District Diabetes Support (PADDS) are so important, to offer advice and support in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. In August, I was invited to Perton Library to take part in a PADDS group session, which discussed the topic of foot care. It is vital for diabetics to take care of their feet because of circulation problems and the high risk of infection. The session was extremely enlightening. I learnt a lot about diabetes and the daily challenges that diabetics are forced to face. The group, which currently has 70 members, is run by diabetics, for diabetics, and encourages members to support one another, sharing information about their treatments and how they cope day-to-day with their disease. The members meet on the first Saturday of every month. There is a varied programme of visiting speakers and guests, who advise members on the various aspects of diabetes and how they can lead a healthier lifestyle. I was very grateful to be invited to the meeting and to be given the opportunity to speak to the members. I am always extremely impressed with the work of the many support groups that we have in South Staffordshire, especially those that offer help to patients during emotional times following a frightening diagnosis. I was delighted to learn that PADDS recently received a grant of £2500, from the Staffordshire County Council Community Wellbeing Fund, which will go a long way to support this fantastic Perton based group and ensure it runs long into the future.

Wild About Perton in September.....If you could take a journey back 300 million years in time, long before the age of the dinosaurs, Perton would look so very different from today. Instead of houses, river, two lakes and surrounding woodland, the land would probably be covered in a dense forest of ferns and horsetails. The remains of this dense forest are now buried deep within the earth below us and was long ago converted into coal. There would be no people to greet you, no birds in the trees and no trees in which any bird could perch. Almost all of the living creatures we take for granted in our environment today had yet to evolve. But there might be one agile creature you might recognise flying in and out of the forest of ferns and horsetails. This creature is the Dragonfly; the most dazzling aerial acrobat with long gauzy wings and one of the fastest and most maneuverable of all flying insects. It has been calculated that the large brown hawker dragonfly, most often seen flying along the lake margins and occasionally hunting in our gardens, has a top speed of 36 km/hour. But the dragonfly can not only fly forward, but also it can fly backwards and sideways, and can hover for long periods. These abilities, combined with all round colour vision – it can see forwards, sideways and backwards at the same time – make it a formidable predator, catching other flying insects on the wing. Before Dragonflies reach their adult flying form they live as larvae in the river and lakes, where they are also formidable predators in the water catching their prey through explosive lower jaws which strikes at lightning speed. Thankfully dragonflies are harmless to humans. They have no sting and will not attack or bite, although some will appear inquisitive. Dragonflies along with their cousins the Damselflies and Mayflies are the most ancient of the insects with us today. Long may they be with us.Join us for one of our wildlife walks leaving Perton Library every first Saturday of every month at 2PM. For further information please call Keith Elder on 01902-754245
