There are 2 different kinds of fitness

General Fitness

Specific fitness is required to take part in sport at a high level. For example, a cyclist and runner will need exceptional levels of stamina.

Physical Fitness

General fitness is also known as Health Related Fitness because it relates to the type of fitness required to cope with everyday living. For example, some strength will be needed to work in the garden or clean the house.

Physical fitness is a blend of a number of physical qualities, which we all need to a greater or lesser extent. To exist on a daily basis we all need a minimum level of fitness to carry out the various tasks of each day. During an average day, a person may need the following…

Minimum Levels of Physical Fitness

Speed

The ability to keep going throughout the day, e.g. delivering post.

The ability to reach in all directions and help prevent injury, e.g. to get a plate from a high cupboard.

The ability to lift, carry, pull and push objects, e.g. to carry heavy shopping.

The ability to move the body or a limb fast, e.g. to catch a falling cup.

We all need a minimum level of fitness to cope with everyday life.

Physical Fitness - Key Points

This level depends upon the demands of each person’s daily life, e.g. a manual worker will need more strength than a computer operator.

To take part in sport you will need a much higher level of fitness, e.g. to play badminton the person will need better speed, stamina, strength and suppleness, than someone who does not do any sport.

Top sports people require a certain combination of fitness to perform well, e.g. a hockey player will need high levels of speed, stamina, strength and suppleness.

Stamina to last the whole game

Speed to move with the ball, to receive a pass, score, or to tackle a player

Suppleness to reach low, wide and help avoid injury when playing

Strength to tackle, sprint, pass or hit the ball

Being fit means different things to different people. A marathon runner may not be fit enough to weight lift. So if you ask the question, “are you fit?”, you should also ask “fit for what?”

The main components of physical fitness are often referred to asthe Four S’s.
