How to check for Termites! Subterranean termites are very common here in the Greater Phoenix area. And they usually make themselves easy to detect early into an infestation due to their dependence on moisture, which they usually have to find underground and their dependence on creating mud tunnels which protect them from dehydration. While our technicians look for them while on the property it is a good idea to know what to look for and to make the effort. Just look around the perimeter of the foundation for a mud tub extending from the soil to the actual structure. This is usually easy to check where the foundation is visible as in the picture included here. Also any appearance of a mud tube or straw either dropping from a ceiling or along a wall somewhere is worth investigating. An active termite tube will not have openings as they always keep the tube sealed. What can create a major problem (on the outside of a house) is where plants or the landscape grade covers the foundation. This would allow termites to develop for a considerable time doing potentially serious damage without detection. Thus it is in your best interest to look around the foundation for obstacles that would prevent you (or us) from having the ability to visually detect these unwelcome invaders early on. We offer a premium termite service with a 5 year warranty so please do not hesitate to call us if you suspect termite activity. Tubes along foundation Tube protruding from ceiling.

Black lights and Scorpions. Why do they go together? Everyone knows scorpions are often a major nuisance pest in our valley. And most of you have heard of using black light searches as a means to control them. Why this is so is what we can offer here. First of all scorpions are known to not respond well to pesticides, yet the need to control them is important. Pesticides do play a role, killing off their easy food sources and killing some here and there. But to really control them often takes a comprehensive approach. A regular black light search outside around the landscape, fence and foundation is valuable for the following reasons. First off scorpions do not travel much. This is because they actually hunt by sitting still. This often keeps them in one area so they do not migrate across properties much. Also they do not multiply fast. They glow in the dark under a black light, and they are easily susceptible to common pesticide sprays so long as the spray actually hits them directly. Thus every one that is killed off before it makes it to the house is one less that can get inside. Performing black light searches can often result in a major reduction in the numbers that can get into the house.

Fyi - Tiny ants that often are found on kitchen and bathroom counters are usually Brachymyrmex. Fortunately they are just coming in for some water.
