FROM THE COVER: "In 1993, Dr. Willner stunned Spain by

inoculating himself with the blood of Pedro Tocino, an HIV+. hemophiliac. This demonstration of devotion to the truth of the Hippocratic Oath he took, nearly 40 years before, was reported on the front page of every major newspaper in Spain. His appearance on Spain's most popular television show evoked a 4 to 1 response in favor of his position against the AIDS HYPOTHESIS ...y et this historic event was never mentioned in the US ... WHY?"

Dr. Willner in fact did get a mention in the Washington Post for injecting himself in Florida and on Dec. 7, 1994, he will do the stunt again, with a posse of reporters to watch and cringe. This book mentions RETHINKING AIDS, as well as Dr. Duesberg, since Bob Willner was an early signatory, and definitely outraged with what is happening to medicine. 280+ pages, lists of therapies--definitely the perfect complement to the Ellison/Duesberg tome. No index.

Joel A. Schwartz

Disturbin and soberin is at least one phrase to dexribe h e long-awake% Duesberg/Ellison effort. Ye there remains hope, too. That is clear because, wkenever have the truth, ou have hope.

The readers of RETHMK&G AIDS will naturally receive this book with little hesitation, but ima ine the reader new to the scandal. Yet, in a sense, this%ook was written for that reader. Easy to follow and understand, but not holding back any punches, the book is set up for anyone to understand. That is what I mean by hope.

Yet, for the person experienced with the whole AIDS debacle, there is new information. More on that later.

The new reader will see for the first time long before he even gets to Chapter 5,( "AIDS:. the Virus Hunters Converge") exactly how revlous scientific malpractice developed and was resoked. He understands exactly how 1) SMON, 2) scurvy 3) beribee, 4 pellagra, 5). leprosy, 6) "neurosyphiiis, 7 Leg~onel 1 a pneumo hrla, the var~ous vliuses ( esp. da'users kuru). 9) {SPE, 10) hepatitis C, etc.( ~ l d s o n says to take alook at E. coli. hanta virus, flesh- eating streptococcus, rickets, Lyme disease) were all misunderstood and extloited . When it is time to examlne "HIV d~sease, one can easil conclude that it looks like just one more n u id& exag~erated biomechanism in a Ion and m a h o r o u s nnng of such things. If t i e .reader concludes with Ellison/Duesberg that such IS the case, then he 1s on solid ground, and can assert his own independence of mind. He or whe will not be forced to believe scientific fables just because the scientists say so.

Some of you have been v~ctlms before you became victors. If you knew now about HIVIAZT when ou had that terrifying "AIDS Tes probab& wouldn't have even had the test in x e 8:: place!

A CLEVER THESIS, BUT LONG ON WIND AND SHORT ON FACT

Too Much Arm-Waving, Politics and a Long Way to go to 'Prove Anything

Harold I. Balz, PhD

So this is the much awaited Duesberg book on the "AIDS scandal"?

Hav~ng been a subscriber (but not signer) I have kept a close e e on the dissidents, persuaded that they have estabtished a prima acie case about the inadequacies of the H V { hy othesis. Furthermore, I. am personally appalled w ~ t g the de facto censorsh~p of Duesberg, as it affects all who are pursuing excellence in scientific research.

So, while I find most of .the material in this book paranold and desultory, I st111 th~nk that those valid oints it makes should be known by all. To this end, t i e non-academic reader will be rewarded for plowing through ,the Innuendo, the tedlous lmputatlon of mot~ve, and the general alr of superiority it emits. Obviously, the young Ellison wrote the book, as Dr. Duesber s style .retains the gravity of Germanized Engli+.%et, whlle there IS much to admire in his fluency and command of the material, it still would be better if the book were more balanced in its presentation o f the various im ediments to, the free exchange of Ideas within the A I ~ S communr

Now, '2 &ing said that, I do not want to dwell on the material known to all but to that material which cau ht my attention for the first time here. Furthermore. f want to go on record as resisting the persuasive inte retation-the "s in" they put on such material. ~ i n a r to conclude, fwant to express m exasperation at t&ir arrogance at suggesting that a lr this AIDS research, etc. is basically uidcd by forces determined to co-opt research anbmedicine itself!

INTERNECINE SQUABBLE: AS some of YOU may know, there are rumprs afloat of the denlise of this printed voice. The votce's cnme? Adverttstng the book entitled: 'Why We Will Never Win The War on AIDS.' by Bryan Ellison and Peter Duesberg.

The advertisement was supposedly unauthorized, as per Amendment ?,of the Constitution,of the United Staaten der Amerlka, so a certaln Phllip Johnson, a

hilosophical deist and Christian" informed me-- The L n e r and Publisher-;that I must now cease all publishing. I am to sit In the corner and be penttent. I must hand over our names and addresses. The Duesberg and ~ I i s o n book must be published by a Major house. I am a rat. Shut up. Now.

Of course, as I cringed and wept, the :ion- legal Dr. Duesberg, Mend and colleague to Bryan during Bryan's five (5) year stretch in Grad School. hired attorney after attorney to su press the publication by Bryan with a Minor publisher. good sources everywhere have stated that Peter got socked for $6,000.00+ to have lawyers write letter after letter threatening poor doom* grad student with everything from preliminary injunctions to confiscation of hts inventory, sales list, etc. The final blow: Dr. Duesberg, trusted advisor to Bryan and fnend for five years notified the Department that Bryan was a bad bo and the University s u b s e q u e n ~ i s ~ i u e d the p w r L h . No Masters degree, no no ~ n g

While I am no legal scholar, as is Dr. Philip Johnson, LL.D.. Boalt Law School. Honored Prof.. I do know that a restraining order or preliminary injunction is very hard to obtain d there is no convincing evidence of 'irreparable personal damage.' How can a v e r of a literary property possibly be enjoined for disposing of his property? Well, the answer is that a brilliant, microbiological mind (like Peter's) is a no-so-brilltant when receivin legal mal-advtce. His final great legal advice? For $80.000 up front, the lawyer would begin a lawsuit against Ellison. Why is this happening and what are the motives of restraining Elltson's publishing the book? Not sure, folks, because 1) as you can see on this page, this identical manusuipt is bein offered for sale, w~th minor changes, under the title of 'Inventing the AlDS Epidemic' with Peter Dueserg and Bryan Elltson (names, revened) by St. Marttn's Press--and you can order ~t herel 2) So wh kick Uryan out of school and insist he divest himself orhis ownership interest? Wh would Phil Johnson announce on the INTEJNET that INVENTING THE AlDS EPIDEMIC was not available by St. Martins Press (herein after known as 'the Press')? What the heckls going on? More inside. PHILLIP JOHNSON ON TRIAL The Attempt to Censor the Ellison/Duesberg

Book by Joel A. Schwartz and Bryan J. Ellison

The road to publication for the book by Bryan Ellrson and Peter Duesber had never been an easy one. Two major utlishers in a row. Addison-Wesley and St. hartin's Press, had paid for the manuscript, then suddenly re'ected it as too controversral. Nearly twen P okers nervously refused to deal with the boo at all. Unwilling to let it die, Ellison had finally taken the initrative and arranged the books release with a smaller publisher. Now, after seven years of academic debate over the HIV hypothesis of AIDS, the process of opening thrs controversy to the publrc could begin.

Not everyone had the same idea. At 11 :05 pm Monday evenin Au ust I, a La d s etter .came in on ~lI%on's fax axachine..?'ou

must rmmedrately cease and deslst publrshrng marketing, romoting, distributin , selling, and othenvifs 8sposrn of the. @ookf," barked the threatening ietter3est an Injunction b~ sou ht to supress the book forcibly. &st astonisRrngly of all, the lawyer was representing Peter Duesberg!

Duesberg and hrs lawyer continued the threats for several weeks, demandin that Ellison pennanentlr sign away his rig%ts to protect the books content an: business affairs-in exchange for nothing. If you do not want to do qis , the book will be lost," warned Duesberg while his lawyer boasted that "You [Ellison] and Peter [Duesberg may L achieve mutual assured destruct~on of the oak, meaning that nei.ther of you will be able tq ublish any versron of the book anywhere."

!o underline the point, Duesber convrnced the University department to cut off retroactively Ellison's month1 sti end (as a graduate student), followedi by Jsmissin Ellison from the program altogether-'ust as &llison was on the verge of earnrng hrs $ h ~ degree after five years of study.

Meanwhrle, Charles Thomas, one of the founders of the Grou for the Scientific peappraisal of the H~VIAIDS Hypothesis, rlle all filed a change-of-address form for the Retiin% AIDS newsletter in an attempt to steal the return mail and revent distribution of the book (the penalty % this federal felony crime can include heavy fines and a prison sentence). Certain other members began a letter-writin cam aign to discourage book sales, and f e al tireats were soon directed against ~ e t h i n k n ~ . ~ ~ ~ ~ .

What brzarre rnfluence could have turned so many AIDS dissidents at each other's throats, and against the long-awaited book by Ellison and Duesberg?

Oddly enou h, one figure consistently found in the mi& of this growing ruckus has somehow managed to remain unruffled and unaffected. His name is virtually unknown to most members of the Group, yet he has quietly exerted a rowing influence on Duesberg and other ieab;ng drssidents. Several key HIV critics have come to depend heavily on this man's advice, even though he has never actually declared his ersonal osition on the r: HIV debate. HIS name. Phrllrp J%hnson.

Who is Phillip Johnson? A professor of law at the University of

California at Berkele and a founding member of our dissiBZ AIDS Grou Johnson epitomize: the ambi uous lawyer & the one hand , whrle on the oker hand-).

But he has developed this skill, to a refined art; wrthout ever takrng a osition, he can convince others that he Ras asserted a viewpoint, or he can drop subtle suggestions upon which others soon act. Always projecting an air of objectivity and authorrty, Johnson maintains a certain aloofness while those around him follow his "advicew--and get into trouble.

AIDS is merely one of several controversial scientific o r . political issues in whrch Johnson has rnvolved himself. Consistently, however, his efforts seem directed more to contain all such controversies as sterile debates within academic circles, rather than allowing the eneral public to discover these issues. The %ar on HIV, for example, will never be stop ed by the NIH- funded scientific community, faced as it is with its conflicts of interest. only a stem reaction by the general public, which does not appreciate paying taxes to be fooled by "experts, would end the power of the HIV dogma. Johnson, on the other hand, seems to have worked hard to p t this HIV controversy from becoming a -

ousehold issue. What are Johnson's views? What is his

agenda? No one seems 9 be qurte sure. Indeed, he is a man of astonishrng contradrctrons, who will sug est one apparent viewpoint at one time, a n f then promptly do a turnabout at hrs next opportunity.

For instance, he is an integral member of establishment a arnst which he

% d ; s i m x l f as an iconocfast. A raduate of Rarvard and of the University of Chicago, Johnson has been awarded the Jefferson E. Peyser professorship in his law department. Unlike such prestigrous but blacklisted figures as Peter Duesbere. Johnson is routinely able to write columns oFsuch controversial iopics as Darwinian evolution, AIDS, abortion, and churchlstate se aration in the Los Angeles Times, the waR Street Journal, the Atlantjc, and even such scientific journals as the Journal o Molecular Evolution. Johnson's textbook,

riminal Law: Cases, Materials, and Text J appears to be used nationwide in law schools, and has been published since 1975 in at least four editions.

Johnson refers to himself as a "Chrisfi?n" who' chayenges the notion of Danvrnian evolution. As such, he is often categorized as an evangelical member of the Reli rous Ri ht by Darwinists; indeed. various lea%ers on & Religious Right-includin creationists- adnure Johnron as a .lose. a&, while Christian fundamentalists publrsh hrs book. On the other :and, he often refers to himself vaguely as a philosophical. theist," refuses .to sta!e a clear

personal posrtron on the Darwrnlsm Issue, and attacks creationist spokesmen who make the controversy a ublic issue, while he tries tg diver! the de\ate into academic circles. Leading Darwinists even feel comfortable holding joint forums with Johnson, including a new computer bulletin board service-a degree of coo eration, that Duesberg . has never achieve$ wrth hrs own opponents rn the AIDS controversy. Johnson also makes much of his

rior work as a law clerk for Earl Warren, the tbrrner Chief Justice of the Supreme Court who led the legal drive to ban rayer and Bible reading in public schools. t e t Johnson has never claimed undergoing any conversion of political views from left to right.

In .early 199 1, Johnson moved from being an outsrde observer to takrng a drrect interest rn the AIDS debate. He has since become a close but not widely reco nized advisor to Duesberg and other leading A ~ D S dissidents,

has participated in the founding of the Group, and has written articles on the subject rn Rethinking AlDS and elsewhere. Desprte this appearance of support, Johnson has never actual1 declared his ersonal position on the issue. bdeed, even a l e r being shown the full evrdence that HIV and AIDS do not correlate statistically, , he continued public1 to state (without evrdence) that "I am l e i with the tm ression that the correlation between HIV an! AIDS is so strong that it i: no wonde~ that so many rqearchers are convrnced rt rndrcates causation." When the infamous attack on Duesbe3 % Ascher, Winkelstein,. et al a pear in ature m March of 1993, in wh~ch Aesberg charged fabrication of data, Johnson ignored the importance of this charge and wrote to Duesberg that, even i the taper contained deliberateIyJabricate d ahla what difference would it make q t h e disputed line In the chart were omitted?" As if a fraudulent paper could still be taken seriously.

Johnson seems to prefer confinihg the AIDS debate to an academic setting, where the entire question would slowly die as billions of extra dollars are spent each year in the War on HIV. I noring the inherent cqnflicts of Interest for N~H-funded AIDS scientrsts, he has publicly retended that "AIDS researchers are on the w f o ~ e honest and dedicated, of course " and have simply continued to make mistakes? "It seems to me that the key to Peter's problem is to build su port within the scientific community for 1 s argument," Johnson told Bryan Ellison-as if such. support were even possible v e n the $25 blllron spent in the War on ~ 1 6 8 . "I see no reason why the disagreement over the role of HIV should prevent cooperation" with olitically powerful AlDS uls, wrote ~ognson on another occasion-ith advice like this, Duesberg and the rest of us would certainly be, spinning our wheels for a long, Ion time-whrle the general '

ublic remains entire& in the dark, footrn the gill., Johnson does not ,stand alone; Bavid Baltrmore, Anthony Faucr, and other generals in the War on AIDS have also repeatedly warned Duesber not to brin this debate to public attention,%ut rather to feep it a p"ate affair within scientific ranks.

Johnson's own behavior is consistent with this a parent a enda Althou h he has so gainel the conhen& of ~ues%erg and some other leading AIDS dissidents that the consider him a close ally and personal friend: other associates of Johnson have never even heard about the controversy. For example, leadin Christians in the Relrgious Ri ht, who also Aink of !ohnson as a close aiy, have expressed astonrshment to us that he never told them of the HIV debate.

A stranger in our midst If Johnson is trying to prevent the AIDS

debate from breaking out into the public realm. he would naturally by to block publication of the Ellison and Duesberg book. Though Johnson has never declared such an intention, his bizarre pattern .of behavior has certainly lent rtself to disruptrng the publ~cation process at almost every.tum.

After Add~son-Wesley first tried to rewrite and soften the book, and finally refused to

HIV Tests Virtually Worthless by Christine Johnso

Does a positive HIV antibody test indicate HIV infection? Does a negative test indicate lack of infection? This information is unknown, since these tests have never, been verified by an independent method of determining HIV infection (called a gold standard).

Such a standard does not currently exist. Manufacturers of HIV antibody test kits admit this in their pack inserts --ed.]. This admission calls into question the claim (by Abbott Labs, next page) of hi h sensitivity goo%) and specificity of 9 9 . 9 2 on the HIV

LISA - - - - . -. These are the two main arameters

for test accuracy: 1) sensitivity r e g s to the extent to which the test will report positive resulp in individuals with HIV infection; 2) Speclfic~ty determ~nes the extent to whlch the test will re ort negative results in persons without ~ ~ d n f e c t i o n .

At first, when setting up the starting point for the test k~t's accuracy, the lnfect~on status of the test (control) subjects must definitely be @own. The VINS must be ~solated. Ne~ther Gallo nor test-kit manufacture? have done this.

Thew starting point is the that all AIDS patients are infected an- random blood donors are not infected. Then, the s ecificity and sensitivi are calculated baselon these %ith this in hand, the tests are having excellent performance and measure the presence (or absence) of HIV. (see example below)

Due to lack of a old sfandqd we still do not know the levels O ~ H I V lnfect~on m any population. High levels of HIV antibody positlvl in AIDS atients are ex lained by the simple get that alfrisk oups & i c a n s even must be included as welfnormally cany high burdens of multiple, potentially cross-reacting microbes.

;te ed in, contacting Re ne Gateway Ju!!shers to arrange a ,cons oger. Re nery rffered nearly as much money as di% St. Martin's, plus a handsome package of guaranteed promotion for the book.

But as soon as Ell~son be an to consider h e Regnery offer seriously, loinson suddenly ;hanged hls, mind. For no apparent reason, iohnson lnsmsted strongly that the authors choose St. Martin's after all. Regney meanwhile warned the authors that St. Martins would probably reverse mtself and refuse to publish the book later on, .but Duesberg so trusted Johnson that he, too, lnslsted on the St. Martin's deal. Ellison relented, and Regnery's offer was re'ected.

As ndicted, in April 1994 the Chairman and CEB of St. Marttn s, Thomas McCorrnack, did chan e his pind. .Out of the blue, he overrode 5 1 s senmor edmtor and demanded a second editonal process to soften the book.

At a time when Ellmson and Duesbera needed to present a united front in the renewed ne otiations with St. Martin's, Johnson sudidcnly step fi in to commynicate with McCormack. 8 1 m m g to be *'a. frie:d of Peter Duesberg and of Bryan Elllson, Johnson wrote an unauthorized letter .to St.. Martin's- attacking Ellison for ho ld ln~ h ~ s Johnson told McCormack to stand #I% don't ive up.- If Bryan refuses to see reasop he wifi be settmng himself up for a disaster." ' Naturally, the letter helped frighten Duesberg into caving in, and be an drmving a wedge between Duesber and Alison. The letter also seemed to pmvo&e McCormack Into mak~ng even stron er demands and recommending that Ellison an% Duesber pay back their advance mone and take the took elsewhere. By May, S t dartin's openly refused to work with the authors an longer, over Ellison's protests.

Now tlat both the Regnery and St. Martin's deals were dead, someone (Johnson?) convinced Duesberg that he needed to seize full and ermanent control of the book from Ellison. !n early June, Duqherg hired an attorney to demand that Elllson sign over control of the book, in exchange for nothing at all. How did Duesberg choose the attorney, or even think of such a course of action? In our personal experience with him, Duesberg rarely makes legal decisions without consulting Johnson.

To increase the pressure on Ellison, Duesberg had the biolog department cut off his monthly stipend, rollowed by having Ellison dismissed from raduate school with no degree at all-despite &vt yearspf work, three sc~entific papers, and havmn wrltten the entire book. We have recently 8scovered that the department did not cany out these actions until receiving a strong second opinior\,favoring the action-from Phillip Johnson! But when communicatin with Ellison at that same time, Johnson carefhly pretended to be neutral and interested on1 in he1 ing Ellison. Johnson hsdY atreat! been tryin a pin Ellmson's mfldence &r some time. kn a fa~led attem t to selze control of the Rethinking AIDS newsitter. Johnson .called up Ellison sevml weeks carher. Clalmlng to speak on behalf of the Group, Johnson samd that Ellison had been chosen to re lace Jim Trabulse as editor, without ~raEu~se ' s knowledy plthoygh Trabulse IS also the publisher A ternatlng between flatte and stem authority, Johnson tried to talk Xlison Into slowly and qu~etly pushing Trabulse aside. What if Trabulse doesn't agree, protested Ellison? Don't worry, sa!d Johnson, we can take care of hmm. Ellison rejected the "offer."

Later, in tryin4 to re- ain Ellison's confidence after hms sti en% had been terminated, Johnson feigneBi norance of the situation and tried to brlbe la son with $200. Again, Ellison refused.

By July, Ellison had finall decided. to publish his bqok thmu h a smalLr publmshmng company. This took Bhnson completely by surprise, causing him to dro his normally charming veneer. He fired of! an an ry and threatening letter to Trabulse, demaniing an immediate sto to the book's distribution throu h ~ e t h i n E ' n ~ AIDS Despite h a ersonal knowfedge to the contrary, Johnson grslenly and falsely declared that "Ellison unilaterally refused to coo~erate with the editors rat St. Martin's] &d effectively

ublic?$on." Johnson also accused ~/Eo"n"~t? &in unethical and unlawful'' for arranging the %ookfs publicat~on, and demanded that Trabulse h p d over the Rethinking AIDS mailing list.

As a legal expert, Johnson has been su risin ly eager to seize the reins of a book anTnew8etter that are not his-without any discernible motive. In the end, he has only succeeded in ending the long friendship between Duesberg and Ellison, at no cost to himself. Acting as a "friend" from within our ranks, Johnson has caused more dama e to our movement than Robert Gallo himself

Were it not for the current publication of the book, it might not have reached the

ublic for several years. While this mi ht suit !ohnson's Bpparent a enda, it woukd help block publmc knowlec$e of the suppressed HIV controvers an could prevent the political backld'that would break the hold of the AIDS establishment.

Fortunately, the book is reaching more people every day. Durin the first four months of publication, the t o o k has already won more supporters for the Duesberg view than the efforts of Duesberg, Ellison, and the Group comblned over the This is exciting news & y t t k r %%

When Ellison dlrectly asked the attorney whether he knew Johnson personally, or had been recommended to Duesberg by Johnson, the attorney dodged the question. Would Duesber have ursued such a reckless legal fight wikout ~oinson's support? Such would seem out of character for Duesberg.

.- DR. BALZ, CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

I cannot speak for him, but 1 personally am glad that a low-profile network of specially trained and funded public medicine experts are watchful for our collective health. In my native Australia, people everywhere are grateful to the public health officials for warning us of the growing dangers of ultraviolet health risks, owing to the ozone hole. Yet, before such officials finally had to disclose that this risk was indeed serious enough to warrant public exposure, they had the common decency to establish the of the scientific evidence.

In other . words, we yginl. low- profile persons investigatin8 susp!c~ous clusters of "biological events. Most, if not all, such events are merely limited in scope and range. To allow such events to become the front-page rist for terrifyin the public would be not ofIy unacceptable, %ut utt would encourage a press already too sensation- prone to track the activities of the surveillance wherever they went, and Impute to their p m i n s and goings invcsfl ation of grave cnses. flo impute to the EIS or any other public health agency, a desire to sensationalize a peculiar cluster for the urpose of. grabbing headlines to induce

eberal funding or to drive terrified citizens into the arms of a venal and greedy medlcal establishment is to libel such devoted public servants. 1 am not, as you Americans say, "buying it."

That aside, the work of the NIH and CDC are also .subject to the authors' sneers. These agencies clearly have fulfilled their mandates, CDC especially doing so with a budget in modern terms equivalent to that of a dogcatcher. NIH, truly, suffers from mismanagerient, loss of vision, and severe turf wars. The Gallo debacle illustrates that to all our shame. Still, with a little

the ield per dollar in si n%% !lt!Ek YOU& increase dramaticalk to the general benefit of every person, both here and abroad. Yet, again we see Ellison and Duesberg making unsupported statements such as :

No serious infectious diseases? What about AIDS?

In the latter cha ters es eciall Chapter 8, the cause of A I ~ S i; adiressed: albert unconvincin ly. Duesbergls well- publicized linking of drug abuse with AlDS is persuasive, but hardl conclusive. Even if the circularity of the KIDS definition were eliminated, such statements that

THINKING AIDS Dec 1994

It is my opinion, even having read this book, thou h, that such modestly bud eted research will $inally prove what real ~h researchers have been saying all along: jn'ection dru abuse only ~ncreases the risk for . ~ l b infection, and weakens the health consistent with abuse. But I believe that drug abuse is not the "cause of AIDS," even if 94% of the cases of AIDS, with or wlthout HIV present, are drug abusers.

Finally, while on the subject of drugs, Ellison and Duesber seem to have leapt off the hard ground otevidence to the thin air of conclusion when they postulate that AZT is somehow equivalent with AIDS! Clearly, such a view is foolish, and avoids the clinical picture. The need early on for such a medicine was vast and met--albeit inade uately. The Concorde Study proves that earl %opes were much too broad. However, AZf is not somg kind of "poison," "toxic chemotherapy," indiscriminate antibiotic." AZT does not "develop lymphoma" or create "massive blood cell loss. These reckless statements are only certified b a handful of inde endent researchers, all orwhom Ellison and bucrberg do NOT apply their usual brand of suspic~ous paranoia to.

Finally, to paraphrase the last sentence of this interesting and important, but seriously flawed book, misguided scientific outsiders will in fact meet thelr long overdue udgment. This tdudgment is simply that

h a b e r g should e glven a p l ~ e to express his views wrthin his own spec~alty, but the bitterness of the past eight 'years h a s to be dro ped, so that he ma regain his objectivity, a n 8 heal the s t t among research retrovirologists. "AIDS ACQUIRED BY DRUG CONSUMPTION AND OTHER NON CONTAGIOUS RISK FACTORS"

By Peter Duesberg, Ph. D. Department of Cell Biology UC Berkeley, Berkeley, CA 94720 FROM: Pharmac. Ther., vol. 55, pp. 201-227, 1992 Associate Editor: D. Shugar $15.00

The work by Duesberg for which there have been no serious challen es, and quite a few non-serious ones, such as Ascher, et. al in N ~ T U ~ massa ing data. Very solid 72 page pa er with nearly 100 c~tations. lfyou don't already have this: GE)T THIS!

DON'T FORGET: Buy John Lauritsen's Books: the AIDS WAR and POISON BY PRESCRIPTION ($20.00 ea. + $3.00 each postage) This is the man who postulated that "Poppers" (amyl nitrites) probably caused cancer, or Kaposi's back in 1982! This is the author who stood against the almost Katlcaesque "AZT Trials" and this is the man who is now reaching into all segments of society with his well-developed information. Furthermork, because these books have a great deal of information for gay men, they add another dimension to the defense against the HIV terror.
