    Peter Evans: Introduction to catalogue

There has been quite a long gap between Peter’s last exhibition with us in 2008 and this splendid collection

that we are now presenting. With complex back surgery now well behind him, it is a matter of considerable

relief to both the artist and followers of his work that Peter is now again able to sustain the long studio

hours necessary to evolve a serious body of work.

Those hoping for an interview between myself and a close friend will, however, be disappointed: Peter’s last

exhibition with us Highly Defined must have been one of the last that we staged before I introduced the

interview format. On asking him if an interview was something in which he would like to engage he simply

responded by stating that he simply wouldn’t know what to say. He didn’t know what I was likely to ask him

of course, but I think that at the bottom of it he simply regards what he does as straightforward. – “what

would I say? I do what I do”.

But what he does is impressive and highly individual. It is also gratifying to see that these new works match

the highest degree of finesse that he has achieved in the past.

An inveterate collector of relatively mundane objects possessing either an interesting patina or engaging

colour or both, he is now happiest creating studio ensembles and then engaging with them to a remarkable

degree. So, Peter is right, perhaps there is little to be revealed here, but I observe that the intrigue stems

from three elements that should not go unsung. Firstly, there is the eye he has for the pieces he selects to

juxtapose. Secondly, his observation and technique in maximising detail and achieving such resonance of

colour is remarkable. Thirdly, the unerring level of commitment he always applies produces paintings that

somehow exceed the total of sum of their parts. Long may this be the case.
