President’s Report by Rachel Stillman PCFA Policy Advisory Council by John Fallis

The warm weather is here and planting season is among us. It’s not hard to tell that everyone is happy about the long stretch of dry warmer weather we have had. It’s so nice to see animals out on pasture again, and many farmers working late into the evening to prepare their fields for this year’s crops. This past month, I had the opportunity to attend a major funding announcement in the amount of $150,000.00 from the Ontario Trillium Foundation for The Peterborough County Agricultural Heritage Building that will be constructed this fall at Lang Pioneer Village Museum. Representing the Peterborough County Federation of Agriculture, I had the opportunity to bring thanks to our MPP Jeff Leal, and the province of Ontario, and also to the Ontario Federation of Agriculture President, Don McCabe and the staff. Without their support for this project, this funding would not be possible. PCFA is excited to be part of facilitating this project and we look forward to the building phase of the Education Centre. We also had the opportunity to speak with MP Maryam Monsef that day and asked to for her governments’ support of this project with the federal funding application has been submitted. As summer approaches, many farmers will be attending livestock and machinery shows at various local fairs. I have recently attended a meeting with a few of our directors as well as the Peterborough Police regarding roadside safety inspections being held at local fairs. As a result, we would like to encourage everyone attending these events to ensure their vehicles and trailers are properly licensed, fully maintained and all loads are securely fastened to Ministry of Transportation standards. There is concern that safety standards are not being met at these types of events and we would like to be proactive in promoting the proper procedures. We would like to see our area’s agricultural events continue to thrive, while meeting the safety standards that are currently required. Without saying this same standard of following the highway traffic act applies to us all in our everyday travels. Last but not least, coming up in August, we are looking forward to our Annual Corn, Beef and Pork BBQ to be held at Glen Isle Farms in Keene. It will be held on August 21, 2016 at 12 noon. Come hungry, we expect it to be a great day! Tickets will be available from any director after June 15. We look forward to seeing you there!

Peterborough County Federation of Agriculture - Keeping In Touch

Our most recent Policy Advisory Council took place April 21. Our first item of discussion was whether it is time for an increase to our membership fees. It has been eight years since our last increase. I look forward to discussion at our next County meeting and from those reading this column. Reports were provided on a number of Provincial Government issues that will have an impact on agriculture:

Don McCabe provided an update on the cap and trade program and the work the Federation is doing

with the Provincial government to make the offset program work for agriculture. This is still at an early

stage, but the Federal Government’s position at the Paris climate change talks emphasises that this

is an issue that is not going away.

The Federation is also actively involved to make agriculture’s voice is heard as the Ontario Trails Act

moves forward.

The Province and State governments are continuing to deal with the issue of phosphorous in Lake

Erie. The west end is impacted most severely. Toledo lost the use of its water treatment plant due to

the severity of an algae bloom that affected its intake.

Two representative of the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation provided a presentation on

how farm assessments are developed and provided to townships for tax purposes.

We discussed whether farmers can influence public policy given our shrinking population. The story of how social media brought Heinz’s Ketchup versus French’s Ketchup to the forefront of consumer thought provided a current example of how an idea good or bad can dominate public consciousness. Can or should we as the Federation either at the provincial level or the county level be involved? This will be another ongoing issue. Best of luck with your crops on what now seems to be summer.

Peterborough County Soil Survey Project Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs

Do you remember looking at the soil map for Peterborough County when you completed your Environmental Farm Plan or needed soil information for crop production activities on your land? The Peterborough soil map outlines soil types (e.g. Otonabee loam) and other soil characteristics such as soil texture and drainage. The last time these maps were reviewed for Peterborough County was in the late 1970’s. While the soil has not changed significantly since that time, new uses and demands for soil maps and information, such as precision agriculture, require a much greater level of soil map detail and accuracy. OMAFRA’s soil survey team will be launching efforts this summer to update and revise the existing soil maps. The soil team will be undertaking field surveys to collect information that will be used to determine where there is good correlation with the existing maps and where revisions or changes are required with the legacy maps. In addition, OMAFRA will be hiring a private contractor to support the mapping work and conduct portions of the field survey work under the supervision of OMAFRA staff. Access to land is a key consideration in being able to generate the best possible end map product. Therefore, the OMAFRA soil survey team is asking for your permission to enter farm properties to examine soil features in greater detail. Entry onto a farm will only occur with the permission of the farmer or land owner. OMAFRA’s soil team expects that this field work will commence in the summer of 2016 and continue into the fall of 2016. The soil survey field teams will enter fields primarily on foot or in some cases truck, depending on the status of the crop(s). Access by truck will be restricted to the fall after harvest for fields in annual crops. When accessing by foot, soil inspections will be carried out using hand tools such as shovel and hand augers to obtain soil observations down to 3 feet below ground surface. The number of inspection sites per field will vary based on the complexity of the landscape (lots of hills vs very flat land) and design of the field program. As a result, there may be some soil types that are well represented and we do not need to access all of the fields that have been submitted. Soil inspections include opening a small hole by shovel, approximately 2ft x 2ft, to a depth of 2-3ft; all holes are backfilled with the excavated material. The soil survey team may use a small drill truck in the fall once harvest is complete and if dry soil conditions persist and allow for rut-free access. The drill truck extracts a small intact soil core approximately 2 inches in diameter. As with the shovel inspections, core holes will be backfilled.

Information collected on a property will be amalgamated with other soil information to generate the revised maps. No private information is made available by OMAFRA under the mapping work.

The Peterborough County Soil and Crop Association is planning a bus tour Wednesday, August 17, 2016. Our first stop of the day will be at our local cricket enterprise in Norwood. Here we can taste cricket flour and enjoy some crispy crickets. La France Sod Farm on County Rd 50 (Preneveau Road) will be the host of our second stop where we can see the production and equipment required to grow grass. We are waiting for confirmation from wither the Ontario Water Buffalo Company North of Stirling or the First Ontario Shrimp farm East of Campbellford as our third stop of the day. We will be leaving Norwood at 9:00am from the Begg Parking lot and returning at 4:00pm. Bring your lunch, some spending money and your camera. Refreshments will be supplied by our association. There is no cost to soil and crop members or 4-H members. All others will be $10. We will have a very interesting and informative day as usual. P.S. we will stop at the Chocolate Factory on the way home for a treat, Contact Jim Buck 705-696-2567 or 705-696-2956 OR Derrick Weiher 613-242-7270 for more information and to reserve a seat.

While your out there going full speed getting those crops planted be careful, farming accidents happen when we are over tired and stressed. Be careful out there and have some fun as well. Have a great summer

Growing a Business? We Can Help!

Haass Acres’ Brian Haass with PED’s Business

Development Lead, Danielle Sullivan

Peterborough Economic Development staff are here to help at every stage of business; from idea to startup to expansion. We recently had the pleasure of working with Brian Haass of Haass Acres/Kawartha Hydraulics.

Entrepreneurs find opportunities by solving customer problems and eliminating pains. Haass Acres is adding full service spraying to their custom combining, tilling and trucking services. The opportunity is emerging from the changing regulatory environment; there are both restrictions on the use of treated seed and rigorous compliance requirements for the safe and effective application of sprays. Haass Acres Custom Farming will offer a much easier, cost effective and environmentally sound alternative to doing it yourself. They are fully licensed and will handle all of the regulatory paperwork. They will also utilize GPS, and state

of the art equipment to efficiently deploy sprays. The consultation with Brian featured questions that many businesses ask: Who are my best customers? Where do I find them? What are the most effective ways to market? What are the occasions where people are thinking about my service? We discussed creating a list of customers for a targeted sales letter and how Social Media can fit into the marketing plan. You can reach Haass Acres Custom Farming at or call (705)740-7776 Be sure to ‘like’ their new Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/HaassAcresCustom/

As per this model, training programs and additional supports are provided to the workers, including transportation to and from the worksites at no additional costs to the companies that hire temp labour. The prospective Peterborough based agency may operate under various models. It may focus on particular sectors (e.g. agriculture or manufacturing only) and target population (e.g. youth only), or work across all sectors and with different profiles of job seekers. The feasibility study aims to assess both the demand and the supply side for temporary jobs in our area. To this end it is very important to hear from you as a business leader on your needs for temp labour in the agriculture and farming sector and your sentiment toward a socially responsible temp labour provider. Does Your Farm Require Temporary Labour? The Peterborough Social Planning Council (PSPC) is investigating establishing a socially responsible temporary staffing agency to serve Peterborough City and County. The PSPC envisions bringing to Peterborough an agency similar to the successful Vancouver based EMBERS Staffing Solutions model (http://www.embersvancouver.com/staffing-solutions/), the only socially responsible temporary staffing service in Canada, and an inspiring success story. Since 2008 EMBERS has employed over 2,200 people and helped over 1,100 transition to full time work. It is currently offering extended health benefits to long term workers.

Ryan Moore, President Peterborough Agricultural Society What we have we been up to? We have added several new board members that bring with them a very unique skill set that will help us move forward the mandate of the Peterborough Agricultural Society, to promote and educate residents about Agriculture. We have just recently completed a strategic planning process. After working with Synthesis Agri-Food Network we now have a 48-page strategic plan that will help guide us over the next 3 years. This process was made possible because of our new partnership with the city of Peterborough. Partnerships, we have a few new ones. We are working with the Peterborough Farmers Market to assure that they have the opportunity to be a part of the Peterborough Exhibition this year. Recently we have become associate members of Peterborough County Cattlemen. This new membership will allow us to not only promote ourselves at their annual BBQ but to also assist in promoting Peterborough County Cattlemen at our events as well. We are working to reshape our Exhibition with a true focus on Agriculture, local produce, Ag Technology and Innovation. Recently we have signed an MOU with “The Greater Peterborough Innovation Cluster”. Because of this partnership we will have a designated area at the Exhibition that will display their clients which focus on Agriculture. The Agricultural Society recently had the opportunity to take part in “Peterborough comes to Queens Park” day as well. This gave us an excellent opportunity to be front and center and to promote our upcoming event. We realize that it can be very pricey to take your family out these days. So one of our biggest changes is that we are now offering a $10 pay one price to enter the Exhibition. You can come in on Thursday to watch the cattle show, then come back on Friday to watch the Rodeo for just $10.

Dave Cavanagh Manager Peterborough Agricultural Society Where are we going, agriculturally speaking? As the name implies, we are an Agricultural Society. Our mandate is to promote agriculture within Peterborough County. Some of the comments coming out of the strategic plan with regards to our relationship with the agricultural community, while not nice to hear, could have been spoken by anyone of us over the last few years. Change is here. We are winding the clock back to our agricultural beginnings coupled with a vision to the future. How are we getting there? Let’s just say that the crop has just been planted and it’s a long time from now to harvest. We cannot get there without your support. We are embarking on a long rebuilding process that starts with developing trust and partnerships within the agricultural community. It has been a long time since Morrow Park was the first thought for anyone looking to hold or participate in an agricultural event at this location. We are here, we are open for business, and we want you to make the Peterborough Agricultural Society your first thought when planning that show, sale, or educational event. Where are we today? There has been some positive movement towards revitalizing the Ag Society. Firstly, this is our first time in Agri-Notes and we plan to be an ongoing part of this publication keeping you up to date with what is happening at our Organization. Peterborough 4H is coming to Morrow Park for their annual judging clinic on Wednesday June 8th. We have partnered with PARD to bring the RCMP Musical ride to Morrow Park on Wednesday September 7th and in addition the RCMP will be stabled here for the week as they travel to other local show dates. We have a very large ag education display planned for the Ex this year as we are moving back into the Memorial Center and we are looking for your commodity group to be a part of that. Please give me a call as we are not currently charging for space allotment for ag commodities or ag education to participate. I am honoured to be a part of this team and look forward to helping rebuild the Peterborough Agricultural Society.

Wanted your best steer for the 2016 Peterborough Ex Steer Show and Sale for Friday August 5th. We are still finalizing details but this will be an un-haltered show and if we get enough interest we will again host the show and sale. We have an agreement with the Rodeo that we can sell the steers at the half time-intermission in the rodeo ring. This will give buyers maximum exposure and well as allow us to generate some audience enthusiasm. If you are interested in more details please contact our Steer Committee Chair, Paul McMahon at 705-930-0879
