Dear Friends of ASIRT,
As we gather together at the 2012 Annual ASIRT Gala, a spirit of hopefulness and determination pervades the global road safety community. One year ago, the UN Decade of Action for Global Road Safety (2011-2020) with its goal of saving five million lives, was officially launched. Many countries have already drafted, expanded upon or enacted comprehensive national action plans, based upon the five pillar program of effective road management, safe user behaviors, improved roads, safer vehicles and enhanced post crash care. As I write this letter, nations and organizations are laboring to establish and institute concrete milestones for each of the pillars – milestones that will chart our progress, challenge our resolve and demand even greater commitment and dedication.
ASIRT, the Association for Safe International Road Travel, has been an active and integral partner in the setting of these important Decade of Action milestones, through its work with the U.N. Road Safety Collaboration, the RS10 project funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies, the U.S. Congressional Caucus for Global Road Safety and through its ongoing efforts in targeted countries. ASIRT also continues to establish increasingly ambitious milestones for itself, as its influence expands in many arenas.
As together we forge these milestones, I cannot help but think of the many personal milestones that victims of road crashes, including my twenty-five year old son, Aron, who was killed in a bus crash in Turkey, along with 23 other passengers, never lived to achieve. It is the painful recognition of those forever unrealized milestones that makes our current efforts so critical and urgent.
Congratulations to our outstanding honorees, Michael Harrington, Mike Stanton and Susan Zuckerman and to our Youth Honoree, Maia Lamdany, for their invaluable contributions to global road safety and to ASIRT. Kudos to our magnificent 2012 Gala chairs, Jonathan and Tammy Landy and Darryl and Pam Shrock and their outstanding dinner committee and volunteers. I am deeply grateful to our extraordinary Board of Directors for their wisdom and dedication. As always, love and gratitude to Executive Director Cathy Silberman and the entire ASIRT team.

Susan ZuckermanSusan Zuckerman has been involved in ASIRT since its inception in 1995, copy-edited several of its publications, and served as its Board secretary. She and her husband Alan have four adult children (eight counting spouses) and nine grandchildren. After teaching English and journalism for many years, Sue returned to her first career as a special needs educator. She currently directs the Upper School Educational Support Services Department at the Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School, is a member of the Learning Disabilities Association, and serves
on the Council of Advisors at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington.
Maia LamdanyMaia Lamdany is a recent graduate of Washington University in St. Louis. She majored in history and Jewish, Islamic, and Near Eastern studies. She interned for ASIRT for several summers and despite her busy schedule, continues to volunteer on behalf of ASIRT whenever possible. She often remained in the office beyond working hours to ensure that tasks were completed on time and exhibited total commitment to every initiative she undertook. Through her devotion to the issue of road safety, Maia has come to understand the vast amount of
work that we have left to do, and is sure that with continued efforts we can improve upon the successes that ASIRT and others have already made. In recognition of her enthusiasm, energy and devotion, ASIRT is proud to present Maia the 2012 Youth Leadership in Global Road Safety Award.

As executive director, he is responsible for managing NADA’s legislative staff and implementing NADA’s legislative agenda. Michael also works on fuel economy, auto finance and highway safety issues. He is the author of the report “Patchwork Proven: Why a Single National Fuel Economy Standard is Better for America than a Patchwork of State Regulations.” Previously he was appointed by President
George W. Bush to be Director of External Affairs for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Michael currently serves on the ASIRT Board of Directors.

Mike StantonFor more than 30 years, Mike Stanton has represented motor vehicle manufacturers before Congress, the Executive Branch, and State legislatures. As President and CEO of Global Automakers, he is a consensus builder who encourages member companies to work together as the auto industry confronts energy conservation, trade policy, and the global environment of the 21st century. A recognized expert on all things automotive, Mike received The Hill’s top-lobbyist award in 2010 and 2011. An article in The Hill explains, “the unassuming Stanton is regarded as one of the industry’s
most effective advocates... a walking encyclopedia on a host of industry issues.” In 2008, Stanton was selected as a “Government Affairs All-Star” by Automotive News.
Mike is a native Washingtonian and holds a Bachelor’s degree from Wheeling Jesuit University and a Master’s degree from George Washington University. He served as an officer in the U.S. Navy and retired as a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War.
