KeytothesuccessfulinstallationofHybridSynergyDrive® withintheAurisHSD’sfront-enginedhatchbackplatform,theelectricmotor,generatorandpowersplitdeviceareallhousedinonelightweight,highlycompacttransmissioncasingdirectlycomparableinsizetothatofaconventionalgearbox.Thefullhybriddrivesystem’sseamless,E-CVTelectriccontinuouslyvariabletransmissioniscontrolledbyShift-by-Wiretechnology,usinganelectricshiftleversystem.

CombinedwithacoolingExhaustGasRecirculationsystem,theadoptionoftheAtkinsoncycleofferssignificantgainsinfuelefficiencyandthereductionofemissions.

BecausetheintakevalvescloselateinanAtkinsonCycleengine,compressionisdelayed.Thiscreatesahighexpansionratioforlesscompression,reducingintakeandexhaustenergylossesandconvertingcombustionenergytoenginepowermoreeffectively. Asaresult,theexhausttemperatureislowerthanthatofconventionalengines.ThecoolingExhaustGasRecirculationsystemreducescoolinglossandpumpinglossandconsequentlyfuelefficiencyisenhanced.Heattolerantcatalystadoptionismostlycontributingtoreductionofenrichment.

Hybrid Transaxle with Electric Continuously Variable Transmission (E-CVT)Housingtheelectricmotor,generator,powersplitdeviceandareductiongearinonelightweight,highlycompacttransmissioncasingdirectlycomparableinsizetothatofaconventionalgearbox,thetransaxleliesattheheartoftheHybridSynergyDrive®system.

Thefullhybriddrivesystem’sseamless,E-CVTelectriccontinuouslyvariabletransmissioniscontrolledbyShift-by-Wiretechnology,usinganelectricshiftleversystem.Theshiftleveritselfisdesignedtoalwaysreturntoits‘home’positionwhenreleasedandtheshiftpositioncanbecheckedontheshiftpositionindicatorintegratedwithinthedriver’sinstrumentcluster.

Adjacenttotheshiftlever,aparkingswitchwithintegralindicatorlightisusedtoengageorreleaseaparkinglockmechanismwithinthetransmissiongearing.Theparkinglockisautomaticallydeactivatedwhendrivingoffandautomaticallyre-engageswhenthecarisswitchedoff.

Generatinginstantpowerandamaximum207Nmoftorquethemotorissixtimesmorepowerfulthanthatofrival,mildhybridsystems.Itisaircooledandmaximumdrivevoltageamplificationis650Vdc.However,underordinarydrivingconditions,unlessmaximumoutputisrequired,themotorisdrivenatanunamplifiedvoltagewheneverpossibletoenhancefuelefficiency.

High Output BatteryThebatterypackusesprovenandreliablenickel-metalhydridetechnology.Itislocatedbeneaththerearloadspacefloor,minimisingimpactoncabinaccommodationandgivingtheAurisHSDaluggagecapacityof279litres.

Power Control UnitSimilarinsizetoa12voltbattery,theHybridSynergyDrive®powercontrolunit(PCU)consistsofavoltageboostconverter,aninverterandaDC/DCconverter,controlledbyamotorcontrolECUwhichreceivescommandsfromthehybridvehiclecontrolECU.

Theinverterconvertsthebattery’sdirectcurrentintoa650voltalternatingcurrenttodrivetheelectricmotorandoccasionally, thegenerator,offeringsignificantlyimprovedPCUperformance.

Aconventional,non-hybridvehicleisequippedwithanalternatortochargetheauxiliarybattery.However,becauseanalternatorcannotoperateduringenginecut-offdrivingmode,afullhybridvehiclerequiresanalternativesystem.HybridSynergyDrive® incorporatesaDC/DCconvertertoreducethehighvoltageofthe202Vsystembatterypackto14V,supplyingpowertotheaccessorysystemsandchargingtheauxiliarybattery.

Atrest,theenginestopsautomaticallytoconservefuel.Underoperatingconditionsoflowengineefficiencysuchasstartupandlowtomid-rangespeeds,thevehicleautomaticallyrunsinEVmode,ontheelectricmotoralone,thuseliminatingCO2,NOXandPMemissions.

Undernormaldrivingconditions,powerallocationisconstantlyadjustedbetweenengineandelectricmotortocombineoptimumperformancewithmaximumfuelefficiency.

ViaanElectronicallyControlledBrakingSystem,theelectricmotoractsashigh-outputgeneratorduringdecelerationandunderbrakingtoeffectregenerativebraking,optimisingenergymanagementintheHybridSynergyDrive®systembyrecoveringkineticenergy(normallywastedasheatunderbrakinganddeceleration)aselectricalenergyforstorageinthehighperformancebattery.

Batterypowerlevelisconstantlymanagedviaanenginedrivengeneratortoobviateanyrequirementtorechargethesystemfromanexternalsource.

Three on-demand Driving Modes - A Unique Eco Driving ExperienceSupplementingtheNORMALdrivemode,threealternative,‘on-demand’drivemodes–EV,ECOandPOWER-maybeselectedtofurtherincreasedrivingefficiency,performanceandfueleconomy.

Fromstartupandatspeedsoflessthan50km/hwiththeNORMALdrivemodeselected,thenewAurisHSDautomaticallyoperatesinEVmodedependingondrivingconditionsandbatterycharge,drivingunderelectricmotorpoweralonetogiveinstantpowerandanextraordinarilysmooth,quietridewithminimalNVH.Thisuniquedrivingmodeisnotavailabletodriversofmildhybridvehicles,requiringthefullhybridtechnologyofHybridSynergyDrive®.

Thoughthepetrolenginewillstillstartifthesystemjudgesthatitsoutputisnecessary,theswitchableEVmodeallowsforsignificantlygreaterthrottleinputswithoutenginestartup.Hence,withvehiclerangedictatedbybatterycharge,theEVdrivemodeallowsforurbandrivingwithminimalnoiseandzeroCO2,NOXandPMemissionsforuptotwokilometres.Becausetheuseofonlylighttomediumthrottleinputskeepsthepetrolengineswitchedoffthroughoutitsoperation,theEVdrivemodecontributestoasignificantreductioninthenewAurisHSD’soverallfuelconsumption. InECOmode,throttleresponsetoaggressiveacceleratorpedalinputsisreducedandair-conditioningcontroloptimizedforimprovedfueleconomy.
