The Order of Service is contained in the Book of Common Prayer, and the hymns are from

Hymns Ancient & Modern Revised.

Opening Hymn 246 – Angel voices ever singing

Psalm 8 domine dominus noster J R Middleton

1 O Lord our Governor, how excellent is thy Name in | all the | world: thou that hast set thy | glory ∙ a- | bove the | heav’ns!

2 Out of the mouth of very babes and sucklings hast thou ordain’d strength, be- | cause of ∙ thine | enemies :

that thou mightest still the | ene-my | and ∙ the a- | venger.

3 For I will consider thy heavens, even the | works of ∙ thy | fingers : the moon and the | stars which | thou ∙ hast or- | dained.

4 What is | man that ∙ thou art | mindful of him : and the | son of | man that ∙ thou | visitest him?

5 Thou madest him | lower ∙ than the | angels : to | crown him ∙ with | glory ∙ and | worship.

6 Thou makest him to have dominion of the | works of ∙ thy | hands : and thou hast put all things in sub- | jec-tion | under ∙ his | feet;

7 All | sheep and | ox- || en :

| yea and ∙ the | beasts ∙ of the | field; 8 The fowls of the air, and the | fishes ∙ of the | sea :

and whatsoever | walketh ∙ through the | paths ∙ of the | seas.

†9 O | Lord our | Governor : how excellent is thy | Name in | all the | world!

Glory | be ∙ to the | Father,

and to the | Son and ∙ to the | Ho-ly | Ghost; As it was in the beginning is | now and ∙ ever | shall be :

world | with-out | end, A- | men.

First Lesson – Isaiah 40.12-17,27-31

Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand and marked off the heavens with a span, enclosed the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in

scales and the hills in a balance? Who has directed the spirit of the LORD, or as his counsellor has instructed him? Whom did he consult for his enlightenment, and who

taught him the path of justice? Who taught him knowledge, and showed him the way of understanding? Even the nations are like a drop from a bucket, and are accounted as dust

on the scales; see, he takes up the isles like fine dust. Lebanon would not provide fuel enough, nor are its animals enough for a burnt-offering. All the nations are as nothing

before him; they are accounted by him as less than nothing and emptiness. Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, ‘My way is hidden from the LORD, and my right is

disregarded by my God’? Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary;

his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; but those who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings

like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.

Office Hymn 160 – Holy, holy, holy, Lord God almighty

Magnificat – Luke 1.46-55 Henry Smart

1 My soul doth | magnify ∙ the | Lord :

and my spirit hath re- | joic’d in | God my | Saviour. 2 For | he hath ∙ re- | garded :

the | lowli-ness | of his | handmaiden. †3 For be- | hold, from | henceforth :

all gene- | rations ∙ shall | call me | blessed.

4 For he that is mighty hath | magni-fied | me : and | ho-ly | is his | Name.

5 And his mercy is on | them that | fear him : through- | out all | ge-ne- | rations.

6 He hath shew’d | strength ∙ with his | arm :

he hath scatter’d the proud in the imagi- | na-tion | of their | hearts. 7 He hath put down the | mighty ∙ from their | seat :

and hath ex- | alted ∙ the | humble ∙ and | meek.

Page 5: Pewsheet - 15 June 2014 (Teigh)

5

8 He hath fill’d the | hungry ∙ with good | things :

and the | rich he ∙ hath sent | empty ∙ a- | way. 9 He remembering his mercy hath holpen his | ser-vant | Israel :

as he promis’d to our forefathers, Abraham | and his | seed for | ever.

Glory | be ∙ to the | Father, and to the | Son and ∙ to the | Ho-ly | Ghost;

As it was in the beginning is | now and ∙ ever | shall be : world | with-out | end, A- | men.

Second Lesson – Matthew 28.16-20

The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed

them. When they saw him, they worshipped him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go

therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I

have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’

Nunc Dimittis – Luke 2.29-32 Rev W Felton

1 Lord, now lettest thou thy servant de- | part in | peace :

ac- | cor-ding | to thy | word. 2 For mine eyes have | seen ∙ thy sal- | vation,

which thou hast pre- | par’d be-fore the | face of ∙ all | people, 3 To be a light to | lighten ∙ the | Gentiles :

and to be the | glory ∙ of thy | peo-ple | Israel.

Glory | be ∙ to the | Father, and to the | Son and ∙ to the | Ho-ly | Ghost;

As it was in the beginning is | now and ∙ ever | shall be : world | with-out | end, A- | men.
