The Christian Journey
– through Lent
– through prayer
Welcome and Opening Prayer
Grace, mercy and peace
from God our Father
and the Lord Jesus Christ
be with you.
And also with you.
his is the day that the Lord has made.
Let us rejoice and be glad in it.
Loving Lord,
fill us with your life-giving,
joy-giving, peace-giving presence,
that we may praise
you now with our lips
and all day long with our lives
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Hymn
1. Forty days and forty nights
thou wast fasting in the wild;
forty days and forty nights
tempted and yet undefiled.
Sunbeams scorching all the day;
chilly dewdrops nightly shed;
prowling beasts about thy way,
stones thy pillow, earth thy bed.
2. Shall not we thy watchings share,
and from earthly joys abstain,
fasting with unceasing prayer,
glad with thee to suffer pain?
And if Satan, vexing sore,
flesh or spirit should assail,
thou his vanquisher before,
grant we may not faint nor fail.
4
3. So shall we have peace divine,
holier gladness ours shall be,
round us too shall angels shine,
such as ministered to thee.
Keep, o keep us, Saviour dear,
ever constant by thy side;
that with thee we may appear
at the eternal Eastertide.
Words: G H Smyttan (1822-1870) & Francis Pott (1832-1909)
Music: Glad with Thee, Geoffrey Beaumont
(Thirty Twentieth Century Hymn Tunes – 12)
Confession
We come to God to say sorry
Lord we have done wrong
in thought, word and deed,
We are truly sorry
and we ask you to forgive us
Help us by your Holy Spirit
to live a new life.
Amen.
May Almighty God have mercy upon us,
forgive us our sins
and bring us to everlasting life.
Amen
Bible Reading – Matthew 6.1-6
Jesus said to the disciples, ‘Beware of practising your piety before others in order to
be seen by them; for then you have no reward from your Father in heaven. So
whenever you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in
the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be praised by others. Truly I tell
you, they have received their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left
hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be done in secret;
and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. And whenever you pray, do not
be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the
street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have
received their reward. But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door
and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will
reward you.’

Talk
Hymn
1. God forgave my sin in Jesus’ name,
I’ve been born again in Jesus’ name;
and in Jesus’ name I come to you
to share his love as he told me to.
He said, ‘Freely, freely you have received,
freely, freely give;
go in my name and because you believe
others will know that I live.’
2. All power is given in Jesus’ name,
in earth and heaven in Jesus’ name;
and in Jesus’ name I come to you
to share his power as he told me to.

Prayers
The Lord’s Prayer (sung)
1. Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
hallowed be thy name.
hallowed be thy name.
2. On earth as it is in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Give us this day our daily bread,
hallowed be thy name.
hallowed be thy name.
6
3. Forgive us our trespasses,
hallowed be thy name.
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
hallowed be thy name.
hallowed be thy name.
4. Lead us not into temptation,
hallowed be thy name.
but deliver us from all that is evil.
hallowed be thy name.
hallowed be thy name.
5. For thine is the kingdom,
the power, and the glory,
hallowed be thy name.
for ever, and for ever and ever.
hallowed be thy name.
hallowed be thy name.
6. Amen, amen, it shall be so.
hallowed be thy name.
Amen, amen, it shall be so.
hallowed be thy name.
hallowed be thy name.

Final Hymn
1. Purify my heart,
let me be as gold and precious silver.
Purify my heart,
let me be as gold, pure gold.
Refiner’s fire,
my heart’s one desire is to be holy,
set apart for you, Lord.
I choose to be holy,
set apart for you, my master,
ready to do your will.
2. Purify my heart,
cleanse me from within and make me holy.
Purify my heart,
cleanse me from my sin, deep within.

Treasurers Needed

seeking two members for the
Treasury Team, to cover both day-to-
day tasks and monthly collection of
figures for PCC meetings. No
experience is needed as training will
be given. We hope to hold a meeting
at the end of February to discuss what
is involved. Please speak to Peter Hill,
Lee, Alison Long or Ann Blackett for
more information or to sign up.
Help Needed
As you know, we take part in Christian
Aid Week each year. This year, our
treasurer has had to withdraw after some
years’ service, so we need a treasurer for
the period 15 to 24 May. This doesn’t
involve complicated accounts, but the
ability to count the coins donated, and pay
them into the bank. If you can help with
this importannt task, please ring Peter
Townsend on 759286, or leave a
message.

make this possible. Please contact
Beryl Kirtland on 01572 724103 or by
