PFEW 2012 – Wow!!!And “wow” is the best word we can think of to describe the emotion and intensity of this summer’s four sessions of Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week. This was our 34th anniversary and we witnessed the graduation of our 31,000th student. More importantly, our student evaluations were just “off the charts” in terms of how our graduates rated the various aspects of the program. That emotion was captured by Marco Bennett of Burgettstown JSHS in Washington County who wrote, “PFEW was a wonderful experience! This amazing program gave me the chance not only to explore an occupation that I find interesting, but also taught me life lessons through its incredible speakers. I will never forget PFEW!”

When the fourth and final class of students graduated on Friday evening, August 10th, 1,656 students had taken the “PFEW journey”, 235 more than 2011, a 17% increase! Ninety-three student “management teams” operated mock corporations, each under

the loving hands of their Company Advisors, all volunteers from Pennsylvania’s private sector who guided them through the rigors of running a company, making all the decisions that real-life businesses do, day-in and day-out. Said Abby McMichael of Warren Area HS in Warren County, “I have honestly learned more in this week than I may have in an entire business course at school!”

Every student team ran their “corporation” for a computer-simulated three years during which time they competed against other student corporations manufacturing and distributing the same product. PFEW is all about the healthy competition that is so central to our free enterprise system and our participants get to experience the emotional ups and downs of what it’s really like to run a modern-day business. Every team must decide how

much to produce, where to sell it, how to price it and also must deal with external factors like downturns in the economy, rises in transportation costs, weather events, etc., etc. Each corporation is publicly held with 40,000 shares of stock at issue and our young

“senior executives” must meet with their shareholders at week’s end to report on operations through a mock “Annual Meeting”, yet another competitive event.

It’s not just about numbers, however, as each team also has to develop and then present a full-blown marketing plan to yet another panel of experts. The teams must develop TV and radio commercials, print advertisements, logos and a webpage for their particular products utilizing the combined creativity of all team members. And the Winners Were...Each of our four weeklong PFEW sessions gives our young “management team members” a chance to experience the excitement of competition within the free market system in addition to learning about the system and how businesses operate within it. Each and every PFEW graduate is a winner, but we give special recognition to the student companies (and their Company Advisors) who raised the bar during each week.

Marketing/Advertising Competition

Throughout the week, each student company develops its own advertising campaign and marketing strategy. Each company member contributes his or her own special talents, using a limited amount of supplies, to create a TV commercial, radio spot, and Web page, as well as various other print advertisements. On Friday of each week, each company presents its campaign to a panel of marketing/advertising judges, where they discuss their campaign and strategy in terms of product features, target market, and selling price. Congratulations to this year’s first-place winners in the Marketing/Advertising Competition:

--- Week I ---On-Track

Management SkillThroughout the week student companies are engaged in a computer-simulation operation whereby they make a series of decisions based upon factors including advertising costs, selling price, marketing research, and product development. Based on those decisions, the computer simulation scores each company on its efficiency and effectiveness. The following companies earned the highest cumulative score for overall efficiency during twelve quarterly operations:

Stockholders’ Presentation

Each company presents a two-year comparative shareholders’ Annual Meeting, also on Friday, analyzing its operation of the company to a panel of judges. Companies explain their business strategy, including their dividend policy, and plans for the future success of their company, in addition to presenting and discussing their balance sheets and income statements, as well as other charts and graphs that visually demonstrate their strategy. The companies awarded first-place honors in the Stockholders’ Presentation Competition this year were:

--- Week I ---Infinite

Company Advisor David Sterrett of Millcreek Township Water &

Sewer Authorities, Girard, PA

This marketing team is all smiles once their advertising presentation is over and they receive feedback from the judges.

One big happy family!

...Everyone Who Was a Part of PFEW 2012!

For the summer program, and for the year following as part of our marketing, we need thousands of copies of our Program Brochure printed by the end of June. In order to meet the deadlines for layout, print, etc., we must have our “final” draft to the printers by early June. As a result, we sometimes receive very generous gifts from our donors after that date that cannot then be listed in the brochure. We would like to take this occasion to thank the following 2012 boosters who made gifts so that young people from their areas might take part in PFEW 2012: Ms. Brenda Wiedman, Arrow Land Solutions, LLC (Blair County); Ms. Peggy A. Grove (Dauphin County); Mr. Douglass C. Henry, Jr. Henry Molded Products, Inc. (Lebanon County) and Ms. Stacey Brodak, Chesapeake Energy (Washington County). An extra special “thank you” is extended to Ms. E. Marie Bothe, The Richard W. Wetherill Foundation and Mr. Joseph W. Gallagher, Gallagher Fluid Seals, Inc., both from Montgomery County, for their extraordinarily generous gifts which qualified them as members of the “Student Champion” Club. And a very special “thank you” is extended to Dr. James R. Scanlon, West Chester Area Education Foundation in Chester County, which qualified them as a “Keystone Club” member. Thank you all! PFEW is all about making life-long friends!

They are called the “heart and soul” of PFEW because it is under their guiding hands that the program comes alive each summer for our young entrepreneurs. These are our “Company Advisors” (CAs) who this year totaled 95 men and women who each gave a week of their summer away from jobs, families and vacations to serve in this all-important program role.

At every banquet, we honor the men and women who go “above and beyond” by serving three years in this very special capacity. For 2012, we had seven Advisors who were presented with a monogrammed PFEW staff jacket from Foundation President John Trombetta to mark their three years of service. Our thanks and deepest appreciation go to:

Week I Mr. Leonard A. Deane, Jr., Owner, L. A. Deane & Associates, Claymont, DE

Week II Company Advisors (l-r) Kelly Marrara, John DeMasi, and

Week IV Company Advisor Matt Bamberski receives his three-year

jacket from John.

Week II Mr. John DeMasi, Financial Consultant, Estate Planning of Delaware Valley, Wilmington, DE; Mrs. Kelly A. Marrara, Senior Independent Beauty Consultant, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Mechanicsburg, PA; Mr. Joseph P. Harford, Founder, Reclamere, Inc., Tyrone, PA

Week III Mr. Anthony L. Kulyk, Police Officer, Mercyhurst University, Fairview, PA; Mr. Andrew S. Terhune, Director of Special Projects, Toll Brothers, Inc., Philadelphia, PA

Week IV Mr. Matthew J. Bamberski, Account Manager, Beasley Broadcasting, Philadelphia, PA

Many, many thanks to these wonderful Advisors who have devoted so much of their lives to the young people of PFEW. We look forward to awarding you your ten-year plaques!!!

Even contemplating what it takes to clear one’s schedule for a week every summer for three consecutive summers is daunting. But, as we ask the students at their Closing Banquets on Friday nights, can you imagine what it would take to give ten years of summers to any organization?! With training days, that works out to just about three months of someone’s life devoted to one particular cause and one particular mission – just an extraordinary commitment.

This year, it was truly a pleasure to honor three Advisors marking their decade long service to PFEW with a special plaque presentation at the closing banquet of each of their weeks. Combined, these three dedicated men have given more than thirty years of service to PFEW and our students. That’s nothing short of remarkable, but fitting, as these are three truly remarkable individuals. Kudos to the following:

Week I Advisors Dr. Rody Borg (l.) and John Bachman (r.) with their 10-year plaques.

David Sawtelle receives his plaque from John in recognition of his 10 years of

commitment to PFEW.

Week III Company Advisors (l-r) Andrew Terhune and

Anthony Kulyk accept their three-year jackets during Friday’s evening banquet.

Week I Mr. John Bachman, Principal, JB Associates, Villanova, PA; Dr. J. Rody Borg, Professor of Economics, Davis College of Business, Jacksonville University, Jacksonville, FL

Week IV Mr. David R. Sawtelle, Manager, Contracts and Employment, Opportunities Unlimited of Erie, Fairview, PA

...How About Twenty Years!PFEW 2012 marked its 34th year and we are blessed to have two outstanding gentlemen who have made PFEW a huge part of their lives for nearly two-thirds of that storied journey. Mr. Russell P. Brooks and Mr. James M. Golding, P.E. were both honored during Week III of this summer’s program for twenty years of selfless devotion to PFEW, each wearing numerous volunteer hats, not the least of which is service on PFEW’s Board of Directors. In addition to being 20-year Advisors, both Jim and Russ have served as Speakers – in Jim’s case on the computer-simulation that is PFEW’s core activity; in Russ’ case on the Marketing/Advertising Presentation that each team must prepare for by week’s end.

It’s not as if these two devoted volunteers don’t have anything else to occupy their time. Indeed, both have extremely hectic schedules – Russ is the President and CEO of SPE Federal Credit Union in Centre County while Jim serves as Managing Director of FedEx Ground’s operations nationally, based in Allegheny County. Their countless and invaluable contributions to the development of PFEW over two decades just gives credence to that old saying, “If you want something done well, always ask a busy person.” To Russ and Jim we extend our heartfelt gratitude – thanks for the wonderful memories and for the thousands of young lives you have touched so meaningfully.

The Raymond G. Weber award, these days, is a very rare and special event at PFEW. The only indi-vidual student award ever given, this is for a young man or woman who goes “above and beyond” what might be expected of them at the program and, indeed, frequently goes to a student who has stepped far outside their normal comfort zone in aiding the team in its work and projects. The recipients of the Weber Award for 2012 were Cayenne Galmiche-Marr as nominated by her Company Advisor Dwayne Waite, Jr., President & Principal of JDW: The Charlotte Agency during Week I and Week III’s Megan Hulings as nominated by her Company Advisor Todd Schorle, President of TS TECH Enterprises, Inc. Congratulations to both Cayenne and Megan for a job well done!

County, “The competition between companies and the use of the market simulation brings you as close as you can get to the real deal. I loved my stay at PFEW and I wouldn’t trade my experience here for anything in the world!”

PFEW was again privileged to be hosted at our two “home away from home” campuses of Lycoming College and the Pennsylvania College of Technology, both in Williamsport, PA. The first three of our sessions were hosted at Lycoming and this was our 23rd year on their lovely campus. Our fourth and final session was hosted at Penn College, our 5th year utilizing their outstanding facilities. Both schools are deeply committed to PFEW’s mission of providing our students with the best possible educational experience. The departments at both institutions work with the PFEW staff year-round in developing the highly intensive schedules that mandate fourteen to sixteen hour days for our students and give them one of the most intensive educational experiences that can be found anywhere. Our graduates are so popular with these two terrific schools that, respectively, Lycoming College automatically offers $20,000 in scholarship grants ($5,000 a year for four years), and Penn College offers $8,000 in grants ($2,000 a year for four years), to any PFEW alumnus who enrolls as an undergraduate at either campus. These awards are in addition to any other scholarship for which that individual student may qualify!

The 2012 sessions were also marked with what was likely our strongest group of speakers ever – nearly 100 individual speaking presentations over the four sessions with world-class speakers

from all over the country. Said Mikhalla Cooper of Butler Area SHS in Butler County, “My week at PFEW has been life-changing, the speakers motivate you in a way that no one else could!”

And how did our students view their overall learning experience? Consider a sample of just a few of their evaluation responses over the four weeks: 97.0% reported to “have a better understanding of the American free enterprise system and their role in it”; 96.4% responded “my PFEW experience will be helpful in choosing my career”; 93.3% indicated “what I learned and participated in at PFEW will benefit me in my personal life” and, most strikingly, 99.3% reported that “my sponsor’s money was well invested.” When you consider that the median age of all PFEW participants is sixteen, these results are truly amazing and demonstrate what an enormous impact PFEW has on our students’ attitudes about the world of business and their roles in it.

Without question, the reviews and testimonials of our graduates are the most poignant evidence of the tremendous emotional impact the program has on them as individuals. Wrote Elizabeth Snell of West Chester East HS in Chester County, “Being a part of PFEW has been one of the greatest experiences of my life. PFEW has been a learning experience like never before. I loved being in a place with people who support each other for a common goal. PFEW was the best part of my entire summer and I will never forget the

Perennial speaker Frank Kennedy interacts with the audience during his “Kennedy Says” game.

amazing people and learning opportunities about business and life. Thank you for providing me with the experience of a lifetime – I will carry these memories with me for the rest of my life.”

It now takes well over a year to prepare for the summer presentation of Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week. The program would never happen without the assistance of literally thousands of volunteers, assisting us in the raising of the funds, the assembly of the curriculum materials and the staffing of the nearly 200 volunteer positions for the four sessions. This issue of PFEW News is dedicated to our wonderful boosters throughout Pennsylvania – the men and women who really make PFEW possible. Never has our mission of celebrating private enterprise and business been more important. Thanks to everyone who helped us make this year’s program so successful. Truly, we are making a difference in Pennsylvania’s future and that of our nation. Our readers won’t be surprised to learn that we are already well into the planning for PFEW 2013 which we hope will reach even more young men and women throughout our great state. Thank you and happy fall to everyone!
