    The public health challenges being faced by the countrycalls for the development of capacity in the health systemsof both the Central and State Governments by way ofpositioning qualified and skilled professionals who canexecute and monitor national health policies and programs,supervise the public health workforce, fully assess thedimensions of public health issues and devise appropriatestrategies to meet emerging challenges. The standard

    MBBS, MD (PSM) and DPH programs offered at medicalcolleges do not significantly impart these managerial skillsand competencies. Hence, this program is designed toimpart the knowledge and skills to address and resolve keyhealthmanagementchallenges.

    The costof the academic program is Rs. 3 Lakhs per year per

    student. However, PHFI is charging only Rs. 1.25 Lakhs astuition fee andthe remainingamount Rs.1.75 Lakhs is borne

    through PHFI Scholarships. Additional scholarships for the

    tuitionfeemaybeavailable.

    The other programs offered by PHFI at the various IIPHs are aslisted below:

    HFI, a public-private partnership endeavor, is a largeuniquely designed & sustainable response to the service

    shortfall of public health professionals (needed in the

    government, NGO and private sectors) in India. PHFI waslaunched on March 28, 2006 at New Delhi. PHFI isautonomously governed and is managed by a fullyempowered, independent governing board that isrepresented by multiple constituencies. These constituenciesinclude representatives from government, contributingphilanthropists and leading Indian and internationalprofessionals.

    The PHFI's charter includes setting up of new institutes forpublic health education and training in various states,assisting in the enhancement of capacity of existing publichealth training institutions, pursuing vigorous researchandadvocacyeffortsonpublichealthandrelatedissues.

    While it is known that enhanced knowledge and a betterunderstanding of health economics is central to moreeffective policy-making for better health services, strategiccapacity and skills to do so, has been one of our keychallenges. This 9-month diploma course in healtheconomics is designed mainly for mid-career professionals.It will provide a basic understanding of key issues in healtheconomics and economic evaluation for informed decision

    and policymaking.

    This one year course is designed to enable students ofstatistics, mathematics and econometrics who havea soundbackground at the bachelor's level in theoretical statisticsto develop applied skills for bio-statistical consulting,data management and analysis and applied research inbiostatistics and epidemiology.

    ThePost Graduate Diploma in Clinical Research is a oneyear

    program which aims to focus on the scientific, ethical andoperational issues related to clinical research. The multi-disciplinary curriculum will enable candidates to developskills for research methodology and data management,special types of clinical trials and management andcommunicationskills.

    Thiscourse aimsto provide comprehensive trainingin publichealth nutrition in a global setting with the choice ofspecializing in a number of topics and in a range of contexts.It provides an integrated program covering dietary,

    epidemiological, public health, social and biological aspectsof nutritional science. Specialist topics include maternal andchild nutrition, nutrition program planning, evaluation andmonitoring, and nutritional epidemiology. Thisarea of studyis particularly suitable for people whose employment

    overlapsthe nutritional areasuch as health workers,medicalpractitioners, dieticians, pharmacists, nurses, healtheducators and teachers, and those who wish to exposethemselvesto contemporaryideas inhumannutrition.

    PHFI is offering a distance learning course in epidemiologyfor those interested in learning basic concepts ofepidemiology and developing epidemiology skills. Thiscourse will offer modules on six focus areas: Basicepidemiology, Practical epidemiology, Computer basedstatistics, Communicable diseases, Non-Communicablediseases and Writing research papers. There will be a strongemphasis on the applied aspect of epidemiology withnumerous case studies and hands on exercises. Thecandidates enrolling in this program will be able to gothrough the course materials from their remote sites andwill need to come for virtual in class interaction withinstructorsonly fora veryshort period.

    This one year diploma program is specially designed forworking health professionals with an aim to develophealth promotion and tobacco control skills among them,which in turn can be integrated into their professionalpractices. The curriculum comprises of modules focusingon health promotion and tobacco control. The healthpromotion content focuses on fundamentals, theories,

    development, implementation and evaluation in healthpromotion along with concepts of applied biostatistics.Keeping in mind the central role of tobacco control inpreventing chronic diseases, the module on tobacco controlserves as a specialization in this diploma covering the basicsof tobacco control,health effects, tobacco control strategiesandtobaccoeconomicsrelated global andIndian issues.

    The course will equip the potential students to apply theprinciples of management in their practice. The duration ofthe course will be 1 year and the contents will be organizedinto 10 modules. These are being written by a team of 40eminent authors and reviewers from various sectors-academia,research organizations and development sectors.The mode of delivery of the course will be though an onlinemode with lectures and interactive sessions built in withinthecourse.Thequalityandcontentofferedby thecoursewillenhance competencies related to program managementspecificto maternaland childhealthareas.

    This six months distance-learning program aims to train theenrolled students in quantitative and qualitative research
