Over 400 teachers from across NSW and indeed interstate, came along to hear keynote speaker Tina Blythe, Researcher, Education Chair of PZ-Classroom and Project Director at Project Zero, Harvard, give the keynote address focussed on ‘Learning and Teaching for Understanding.’ Tina engaged everyone with her research, strategies and ideas dealing with preparing our students for the future. Term 2 Week 5A and 6B

Monday 27 May 2019

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Project Zero, Sydney’s third annual conference was held last Sunday 19 May at Masada College St Ives. This requires teaching for understanding. Participants then went to a variety of workshop offerings. I am very proud that Kiama High School teachers Kate O’Connor, Kylie Chapman and Leonie Fowler (pictured) presented a workshop at the conference. Their session was titled Embedding a Culture of Thinking and was clearly linked to

Tina’s keynote address. There is also a clear link to our strategic directions #1 and #2. We are continuing to work with consultant Simon Brooks this year in embedding a Culture of Thinking (#COT), a highly successful approach.

Strategic Direction #3 was also in action this week at Kiama High School. We supported our local community and raised school spirit by cooking a BBQ to support the Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal. Graham Packer spoke on assembly on Monday to explain how he raises funds in the local community to be spent on services in this area. Pictured are some of our SRC representatives who were busy advertising, cooking and raising much needed contributions.

DEPUTY PRINCIPALS’ REPORT TOILETS Unfortunately, we have a number of students who do not value or respect our school environment and this is reflected, repeatedly, in the F and A Block toilets. We recently closed the girls F Block toilets for 4 days to be cleaned and repainted after a large amount of graffiti and unsatisfactory items were discovered. This is not in the daily jobs of our General Assistant and he had to ignore other duties for this time to ensure the toilets were in a satisfactory condition. It was discovered that A Block toilets increased in its vandalism and the reports about items and vandalism from cleaners have also increased. We do not want to revert to the policy of 2017 where students presented to the front office to use the toilet facility during class time but are left with little else to do to ensure a clean, hygienic and safe facility for our students. Please be respectful of our facilities and the time people put in to ensuring our environment is a pleasant one. All students have been spoken to at both Stage and whole school assemblies. FLEXIBLE LEAVE PASSES Individual applications will be considered and the passes from Term 1 2019 have expired. All steps must be followed or this privilege will be revoked. YEAR 12 A reminder to Year 12 about the importance of attendance – scanning has commenced and this is a privilege that will be removed if the procedures are not strictly followed. That includes arrival on time because even a few seconds after 8.55am will mean you are locked out and have to go to the office to explain your absence. Success in Year 12 will come from high attendance – fact! N AWARDS At least 51% of course must be satisfactorily completed. Letters have already gone home and others will be issued this term. Talk to Teachers/Head Teacher/Year Advisers or Deputy Principal to help rectify any outstanding tasks. Non-serious attempts for tasks will result in student interview to determine the level of seriousness towards the HSC. Please call the Deputy Principal if you are experiencing any issues – it is better to try to work to overcome as they arise. Do not leave it until it is too late.

EXCURSIONS: PLEASE PAY BY THE DEADLINES The students at Kiama High School are extremely lucky to have such a wonderful range of extra-curricular opportunities provided to them by their teachers. These excursions take time, careful planning and this all comes from goodwill of staff, aiming to provide the best for their students. It is the responsibility of the student and caregiver to ensure these excursions are paid on time as failure to do so can mean buses are cancelled, doors are closed and community connections are broken if we dishonour our bookings or payments. With each excursion, we have late payments that are not accepted and upset parents and children. We understand there are sometimes special circumstances but we try to overcome these by providing the maximum time possible for payments and sending reminders via SchoolStream. However, there must be a cut off so that we can confirm our attendance and plan our school days accordingly. Please observe any deadlines for payment and contact the front office to organise a payment plan if required. PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS YEARS 7, 11 AND 12 Interviews will be held on Tuesday 18 June from 3.45pm to 7.00pm. All parents of students in Years 7, 11 and 12 will receive an email next week providing your log in code and details of how to book interviews online. If you have not provided a current email address or if you do not receive an email by Friday 31 May, please contact the school office and ask for Jackie Steel who will confirm your correct email address.

Attendance Matters: It’s Not OK to be Away!

Kiama High School strives to work with parents to improve the attendance of students and it is timely to re-visit the school’s attendance procedures for students arriving late or leaving early.

• Students arriving late to school must have a formal explanation, via available communication mediums, from the parent when signing in at the office. Students arriving late without a formal explanation on three occasions in a term, will be given an after school detention.

• Early leaver’s pass must only be used for exceptional circumstances. Students must present at the office, before school, with a note of explanation for the early release and if attending a medical appointment then the medical practitioner’s name, contact details and time of appointment must be included on the note.

• A Doctor’s Certificate, Certificate of Attendance or evidence of an appointment is requested to be presented when a student attends a medical appointment during school hours on the same day of the medical appointment or the next school day. If the appropriate document is not supplied, then the absence will be recorded as ‘Unjustified explained’.

• Students absent from school due to sickness: if students are too sick to be at school, then they are too sick to be outside of their home environment unsupervised.

As much as the school wants students to attend school, students should not be sent to school if they are genuinely ill. We have had greater numbers than usual of students reporting to sick bay and then being sent home by lunch time. This causes

a bigger inconvenience to parents having to make arrangements to collect their child, than an inconvenience to the school itself.

Be on time, Be at school, that’s the rule!

SPORT The last few weeks of Term 1 and the start of Term 2 have been an extremely busy time for Kiama High School’s many talented athletes. We have had teams and individuals represent our school at AFL, Volleyball, Rugby League, Oztag, Soccer, Lawn Bowls, Netball, Table Tennis, Rugby, Swimming and Cross Country. Many of these teams and individuals have successfully progressed through to the next stage of their respective competitions. We wish them the best.

YEAR 8 VISUAL ARTS CLAYMATION INCURSION On Tuesday 14 May, the elective Year 8 Visual Arts class were involved in a Claymation Incursion. Hosted by Sammat Education, this workshop aimed at building student skills in the art of stop-frame animation. Prior to the workshop, students were asked to develop a range of script ideas. The idea with the best potential was used to create a storyboard and students also created painted backdrops to suit their specific settings. Over the day long session, students learnt how to capture each frame, how to create characters from plasticine, and how to add sound effects to their finished works. The day culminated in students viewing all 10 films, made by the student groups. The Visual Arts faculty were impressed with the calibre of work created over the workshop and look forward to sharing these films with the KHS community of family and friends in the near future!

SHINE GIRLS

The Shine program has been running successfully at Kiama High School for 7 years. It is a personal growth program for Year 8 girls. It helps young women identify themselves as valuable with much to contribute. This is a small sample of what the girls themselves feel about attending for one period a week for a term. Thank you to all the ladies that volunteer their time every week. It is very much appreciated. HAS SHINE BEEN A WORTHWHILE EXPERIENCE FOR YOU?

• Shine has been an amazing experience as it makes you feel included, free and shows you that you are not the only person feeling a certain way.

• It always makes me feel better about myself. • The leaders have taught us useful values and how to deal with our

emotions. • Shine has been a comfortable and kind place that I feel free to say how I

feel. • It taught me to be brave. I also made more friends. • Shine has helped me to brush off all the things people say to me. Shine has

made me feel worth it. I love it. WHAT HAS BEEN MOST HELPFUL AND RELEVANT FOR YOU?

• Shine made me feel it is ok to be sad or angry and that you are not the only person feeling that way.

• The most relevant thing in Shine for me was about the choices that we make.

• Worth being shown that you are worth something even though at times I do not make myself believe that.

• Shine has helped me to become me. It’s helped me not to be so shy. WOULD YOU RECOMMEND SHINE TO OTHER GIRLS?

• I would recommend Shine to other girls who feel like the outsiders or not good enough. It makes you feel good about yourself.

• Yes, I would definitely recommend Shine for everyone, because you can share what you want and there is no pressure.

YEAR 10 GEOGRAPHY EXCURSION On Friday 10 May, Year 10 Geography students participated in a fieldtrip to Warilla Beach and Shell Cove. With the help of staff from the Illawarra Environmental Education Centre, students learnt about the coastal management strategies in place at Warilla Beach and used various weather instruments to measure air and soil temperature, wind speed and light in the sand dunes. We also visited Shell Cove to see the development taking place at ‘The Waterfront’. Glenn and Chris from Frasers Property took us on a tour of the marina that is under construction and explained the environmental management strategies that are being used to protect biodiversity, soils, water and air quality. I would like to congratulate Year 10 on their excellent effort and behaviour on the day.

YEAR 8 GEOGRAPHY EXCURSION

On Thursday 16 May, a group of intrepid Year 8 Geography students embarked on an adventure to investigate the Crooked River catchment. Students were greeted with a spectacular view of the countryside from a vantage point near Curry’s Mountain. The geographers were able to determine the water quality at various locations including Gerringong township and the estuary at Gerroa. Students were also treated (no pun intended) to a tour of Gerroa Wastewater Treatment Plant. Despite initial apprehension, they completed their worksheet with gusto and showed a great deal of interest in the facility. All students are to be commended on their behaviour and they are in a good position to complete the test after their firsthand experience on fieldwork. Miss Cutting, Mr Anderberg and Mr Berry would like to congratulate all students on their exemplary behaviour.

BAND NEWS

Last weekend was a busy one for fund raising for the School Band. On Saturday we worked alongside the P&C on the cake stall. Band members and families donated many delicious goodies to sell throughout the day. The day was very successful and on behalf of the Band members and their families a huge thank you to the wider school community for their assistance donating cakes. In addition, we would like to acknowledge Dianne from Gainsborough Bakers for

donating lamingtons. We then followed up with a BBQ working alongside Kiama Lions Club at the Sunday Kiama Markets. The Lions Club representatives were so helpful and great fun to work with, so again a huge thank you to the Lions Club and all the band parents who came along to give a helping hand. With only one month to go until our tour to Western NSW we have an opportunity to perform at Hindmarsh Park on Sunday 2 June, so come along and support our band.
