FROM THE DEAN

As I began my third year as part of the Purdue Pharmacy family, I continue to be impressed by the tremendous support of our alumni and friends. As you’ll see in the back pages of this issue, we are privileged to have a great group of alumni who continue to support our program through their generous gifts. Without such generous support, we could not be a program of excellence. Our sincere thanks to each of you who support our program. The 2008-2014 School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Strategic Plan was unanimously approved by the faculty at the School faculty meeting on September 19, 2008. After approval by the University administration, the plan will be posted on our website. This has been a process that included many individuals, including faculty, staff, students, advisory council members and other alumni. Special thanks to Jim Tisdale, Professor of Pharmacy Practice, who logged many extra hours shepherding this process as chair of the Committee. I also want to thank the members of the Strategic Planning Committee: Eric Barker, Associate Professor of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology; Patti Darbishire, Clinical Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice; Pat George, Director of Recruitment and Admissions Assessment, OSS; Marietta Harrison, Professor of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology; Mary Ellen Hurt, Manager of Operations, Industrial and Physical Pharmacy; Greg Knipp, Associate Professor of Industrial and Physical Pharmacy; Cindi Koh-Knox, Clinical Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice and Associate Director, CE; Nate Milton (BS 1989, PhD 1995), Eli Lilly; Ken Morris, former Professor of Industrial and Physical Pharmacy; Matt Murawski, Associate Professor of Pharmacy Administration; and Kevin Sowinski, Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice. Thanks to a generous gift made by Mrs. Ginny Tyler, I am pleased to announce that the Varro E. Tyler Distinguished Lectureship has been endowed, thus assuring support for this fine program to endure for years to come. The School had the pleasure of welcoming Michael R. Cohen, President of the Institute for Safe Medication Practices, as the Tyler Lecturer on November 13 and 14. I am also pleased to announce that we have begun fund raising to establish the Patrick F. Belcastro Scholarship. Initiated through a lead gift by Mary Baker (BS 1979), this scholarship is being established in his honor to provide scholarships to students enrolled in the professional program. If you are interested in contributing to this scholarship, please contact Chris Smith, our Director of Advancement. The School extends its sincere gratitude to both Ginny and Mary for their ongoing generosity. In my last letter, I introduced some changes to the alumni publications. In this issue of The Purdue Pharmacist, you will find several features that were once presented in our Annual Report. I hope you’ll enjoy reading about the 2008 Employment Surveys and Admissions Statistics, as well as the Donor Honor Roll. The School will also launch an online version of the Annual Report soon, so please stay tuned for more details. Founded in 1884, the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences will celebrate 125 years of excellence beginning in the fall of 2009. In this issue, you will find a removable 18-month calendar filled with historical factoids and photos of the School, as well as important dates for upcoming events. Details about these events will be published in forthcoming issues of the magazine. We look forward to seeing you on campus in the upcoming months to share in this special time. With the fall semester drawing to an end and the holidays upon us, I want to wish each of you a joyous and healthy New Year.

Hail Purdue!

When asked what advice he gives students entering the pharmacy profession, Jeff Chin’s answer is twofold. “If you want to understand medications, you need to know two things: 1) it’s all about mechanisms, and 2) the body is an amazing homeostatic machine.” In addition, he advises students that they should always try to remind themselves that there is a real person attached to that list of medications and disease states, and that in order to be happy as a pharmacist, they need to figure out what they like about their profession. Jeff earned his PharmD from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and completed a residency at the Detroit Medical Center in Harper Hospital. He is currently a clinical pharmacist at Porter Health in Valparaiso, Indiana. His job responsibilities include “anything and everything that could be vaguely called clinical,” says Jeff. These duties include: nursing; physician and patient education; evaluation of new medication for formulary; medication use evaluations; adverse drug reaction reporting; pharmacokinetic dosing; nutritional support; as well as “the infamous other duties to be assigned.” Jeff is a member of ASHP. Upon receiving the award, Jeff didn’t know if he really deserved it. “It’s not about me, it’s about the students. Also, as a pharmacist, it’s my professional responsibility to help train pharmacy students. [You’re welcome, Dr. Shepler.]”

Susan Brust received a BS in counseling and psychology. She also earned a BS in Church Administration and is an ordained minister. At the time the award was presented, Susan was the community relations specialist for SouthernCare Hospice. Since then, she has accepted a new position with Westminster Village in West Lafayette, IN, where she serves as Assisted Living and Health Care Sales Counselor. She has been a Purdue preceptor for 3 1/2 years. Susan comments that getting to know the students and having the opportunity to impact their lives with end of life care experience is what she enjoys most about serving as a preceptor. “At SouthernCare Hospice, all of our patients are terminally ill. The treatment with hospice patients is different in that we seek to keep the patients comfortable and pain-free versus looking for a cure,” she says. “The students are given the opportunity to do med assessments and help with the actual admission process. They are given opportunities to interact with physicians and other health care providers. They also are given opportunities to teach in-services and to do drug interventions and one-on-one education.” Her advice to the students who enter into practice is to see the need to build relationships with their constituents in such a way that it will enhance the trust and confidence in their pharmacist. She says oftentimes a customer will confide in their pharmacist before they talk to their medical doctor. “I want them to always be looking for health changes. In order to know if there is a change in the client’s physical condition, they need to be familiar enough with them to recognize these changes.”

“In order to involve students in my rotation, students participate in allclinical pharmacy activities, thus enabling the pharmacy department to cover more patients,” says Kwadwo Amankwa, Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice for Purdue University and Clinical Pharmacy Specialist at the Indiana Heart Hospital in Indianapolis. “They also help the pharmacydepartment keep updated with their participation in journal clubs and formal presentations.” Kwadwo has been a Purdue preceptor for six years. It is through his role as a preceptor that he enjoys having the opportunity to teach clinical pharmacy practice to students using real life situations. He explains that students are assigned a wing of the hospital and provide pharmacotherapy services for the patients. They provide drug information and education through in-services for nursing on their wing. Students also participate in data collection and analysis for medication use evaluations. When advising students entering the profession, Kwadwo says he encourages lifelong learning and commitment to helping train the next generation of professionals. He also emphasizes rational, evidence-based pharmacotherapeutic decision making as well as assertiveness when making recommendations.

VARRO E. TYLER DISTINGUISHED LECTURESHIP ENDOWED

“Since its inception in 1987, the Varro E. Tyler

Distinguished Lecture Series has enjoyed a

reputation for excellence. It is well-known for

its formal presentations, informal consultations,

and social interaction between national and

international leaders who are at the cutting edge

of their disciplines, and the faculty, staff and stu-

dents of the School of Pharmacy and Pharma-

ceutical Sciences and the Purdue community.”

– Dean Craig Svensson

The Tyler Distinguished Lectures Series was established by the pharmacy faculty to recognize Dean Varro E.“Tip” Tyler for his many years of dedication to the School and his impact on the advancement of pharmacognosy upon his retirement as dean and promotion to Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs at Purdue University in 1986. “The lecture series is truly a fitting tribute to the expertise and profes-sional accomplishments of Dean Tyler,” comments Dean Svensson. Since the beginning, the lectures have been graciously funded by Eli Lilly and Company. A generous gift recently given by Mrs. Virginia “Ginny” Tyler now endows the series. The endowment ensures that this most valuable enterprise will continue far into the future, benefiting countless students and scientists in the pharmaceutical industry. The School extends its sincere gratitude to Eli Lilly and Company and Mrs. Tyler for their support of the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

“The main reason I endowed the Tyler Lecture Series is, of course, to continue the series in memory and in honor of my dear husband who served as dean,” comments Mrs. Tyler. “I also believe it is both interesting and educational for faculty and students alike to have a talented speaker come to Purdue and speak on his or her special pharmaceutical subjects.”

Basically, she helps with anything the Dean, professors, or students need. She serves as a guest speaker for several classes and as a small group facilitator for integrated labs. She is a member of the Task Force for Curriculum Review and the Committee for the 125th Anni-versary Celebration. She helps coordi-nate Walgreens functions on campus, coordinates and trains Walgreens pre-ceptors for Introductory and Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience, and serves as a preceptor. Steven Abel, Assistant Dean for Clinical Programs, is pleased that Walgreens has committed to allowing Patty to co-coordinate one integrated lab with a faculty person each semester. “Patty brings contemporary practice-based knowledge directly to the students in our lab. She is very motivated and

Patricia (Parr) Elsner (PharmD 2001) has been appointed a University Ad-vocate for Professional Development through her employment at Walgreens. She is responsible for students at Purdue University, while her counterpart Amy Lenell assists Butler University. Her position was formed following a conver-sation with one of Walgreens’ pharmacy supervisors and point person to Purdue, Cathy Simmons (BS 1998), in April of 2007. “Given my strong background working with students, Cathy and the two other supervisors for Central Indi-ana offered me a position working with Purdue students for Walgreens,” says Elsner. She and Amy run the summer intern programs for Central Indiana and serve as liaisons to the schools. Her duties with Purdue—both profes-sionally and personally—run the gamut.

wonderful to work with,” says Abel. Patty comments that community pharma-cy is changing drastically right now and that Walgreens is a driving force in changing the role of a community pharmacist to enhance patient care. Her role as an advocate to the Purdue School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceu-tical Sciences is to educate both students and faculty on the fact that pharmacists are more than just people who “lick, stick, and pour.” When she talks to students, she encourages them to keep the passion they have during pharmacy school for patient care. Too easily, students graduate and get thrown into a stressful environment and forget about their goal of helping patients, and she thinks this often makes students shy away from taking a career in community pharmacy. “I still work in the store three days a week, which keeps me involved with patients and gives me credibility with the students,” she says. “I serve as an example to students that you can counsel patients on a daily basis, get involved with Medication Therapy Manage-ment, work as a preceptor, and take on other specialties that make a career in community pharmacy extremely fulfilling.” Patty truly enjoys teaching and mentoring, and she never shies away from being open with the students about the rewards, as well as the stresses, of her career. Although she enjoys the path she’s chosen, she doesn’t try to push students to choose a career in com-munity pharmacy or even with Walgreens, but encourages them to do what is right for them. “I want students to understand that if they are enthusiastic and committed to patient care, there are exciting opportuni-ties for them in community pharmacy,” she says. “My ultimate goal is to help students realize that a career in community pharmacy can help them utilize their education to the fullest. I believe that community pharmacists have so much to offer patients, physicians, and other healthcare professionals—more than just dispensing. We need leaders in this field. We need pharmacy graduates who are committed to patient care and who are willing to push for it.”

6TH ANNUAL GARNET E. PECK SYMPOSIUM

The Sixth Annual Garnet E. Peck Symposium was held on Thursday, October 23, 2008, on the Purdue University campus in West Lafay-ette. The topic was Counterfeit Medications: Current Approaches and Research Opportunities. The problem of counterfeit medications continues to threaten patient safety and the economic viability of drug development. Innovative methods to detect counterfeit medications and to prevent them from entering into the distribution system for pharmaceuticals are needed in order to assure the integrity of our medication supply. The School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences believes that the academic environment at institutions such as Purdue University provides an opportunity to develop interdisciplinary approaches to the problem of counterfeit medications. To stimulate interest in the academic community and to identify research opportunities, the School was pleased to host this special symposium, which was generously sponsored through an educational grant from Eli Lilly and Company. The objective of the symposium was to provide an overview of the key issues surrounding counterfeit medications and to identify research opportunities. A team of experts in the field were assembled who discussed current and emerging technol-ogy, as well as opportunities for future innovation. After the symposium, the School announced a request for proposals to provide seed funding for innovative projects addressing this important subject.

Save this date! The 7th Annual Peck Symposium will be held on November 13, 2009, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Fowler Hall on Purdue’s West Lafayette campus. More information will be made available online at http://www.ipph.purdue.edu/peck/.

When Mary Kiersma left Purdue five years ago her with freshly minted PharmD degree, a new pharmacy practice lab was just a dream. And now it’s a dream come true. Today, after practicing in a community

setting for three years before pursuing a drug information residency, Kiersma is back as a graduate student in the department of Pharmacy Practice (PHPR), and she marvels at the state-of-the-art CVS Pharmacy Practice Laboratory, which serves as the heart of Purdue’s clinical pharmacy education programs. “This lab is amazing,” Kiersma says, recalling the cramped, crowded conditions in which she studied not so long ago. “It is a much better environment for instructing students. It’s very ‘real world.’” Amid confetti and fanfare, CVS Pharmacy Practice Laboratory was dedicated almost two years ago, and now the first students to fully benefit from the state-of-the art facility are about to embark on their clinical rotations, the next step on the way to becoming community pharmacists. To say the old pharmacy practice lab did not provide an “optimal learning environment” for modern pharmacy education is an understatement. “Imagine the oldest pharmacy you can—that’s what was here before,” says Steven Abel, Assistant Dean for Clinical Programs. “The space was all cabinets and counters.” With little serious renovation in 40 years, the lab located in the basement of the Robert E. Heine Pharmacy Building was completely gutted and, as pharmacy faculty and students alike proclaim, “transformed.” Craig Svensson, Dean of the College of Pharmacy, Nursing, and Health Sciences, says the enrichment of the education environment reflects and enhances the always-changing practice and profession of pharmacy. “The required degree of the profession emphasizes clinical education,” the dean explains. “This laboratory offers us greater capacity to teach the latest techniques found in pharmacy practice.” Finding a remedy for the old lab’s crowded, outdated confines began with Kimberly Plake, Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice and the 2008 Dr. Aziz Outstanding Teaching Award recipient. For the greater part of a year, Plake visited pharmacy labs, consulted faculty members, conferred with the

architects on feasibility, and, ultimately, helped design the lab. Demolition of the old facility began at the end of the 2006 spring semester. The new lab was dedicated in October 2006. The 1,968-square-foot practice lab almost doubles the size of the previous area, and its educational technology and flexible room configuration capabilities replicate modern professional pharmacy labs. These improvements further facilitate teaching the es-sential components of “best-practices” pharmacy that reflect pharmacists’ evolving role—from filling prescriptions and dispensing medication to front-line patient counseling and promoting wellness. “By renovating the laboratory, the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences addresses the needs of our students as well as their future employers and patients,” Plake says. Six small presentation rooms flank the main lab area. Their retractable walls can create four larger rooms as needed. The center lab area also can be altered for various lessons and demonstrations, such as compound preparation. New computers and software allow students to simu-late patient profile work, review patients’ medications, and anticipate possible reactions to medicines. Other equipment helps students develop skills in physical assesment, injection technique, medication monitoring, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Video cameras installed throughout the renovated facility can project images from class activities to strategically placed television screens. “Everybody’s got the best seat in the house,” Plake notes. “Students can also replay a demonstration as many times as they need because it is recorded and saved on the network.” Video recording students’ presentations to assess their ability to interact with patients is a valuable teaching and feedback tool, she adds. Once again, donors’ visionary commitment and generosity to Purdue education made the transformation possible. The lab is named in recognition of CVS/Pharmacy Corp.’s $300,000 gift, the largest contribution to the $825,000 project. “This lab is a testament to how all of our donors’ contribu-tions make a significant impact on the education of our stu-dents,” says Christopher Smith, Director of Advancement for the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. He said 45 companies, alumni, couples, and individuals—including President’s Council members—gave gifts of $1,000 or more to the project. With such healthy support, the CVS Practice Laboratory helps fill the prescription for world-class pharmacy and pharmaceutical education at Purdue.

Is Grad School Right for Me? Summer Research Opportunities Offer Answer

Summers offer great opportunities for undergraduate students to do research with a faculty member in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and help them find out the answer to the question: Do I want to go to graduate school? This year brought another group of great students from both the BSPS and PharmD curricula who have a serious interest in research. The Dean’s Summer Undergraduate Research program was supported by the Lilly Endowment Grant, Undergraduate Summer Research Awards, the Beatty Undergraduate Research Scholarship Fund, the JeannAnne Darr and James B. Chaney Education and Development Fund, the Mark and Kandy Fitch Fellowship in Industrial and Physical Pharmacy, The Janet and William Strang Pharmacy Endowment, and the faculty. This program afforded the opportunity for eight students to engage in research in the three departments within the School. Those students included Eun Kyung Chung, Marc Ciesco, Matthew Jackson, Josh Ramer, Sooyoung Shin, Ryan Tammen, Haoshu Yang, and Rachel LaVoy. A total of $28,000 was awarded for the research conducted. Val Watts, Associate Dean for Research, arranged for a faculty member from each department to join the students for lunch. Each individual faculty member discussed his or her research and what it is like to be a faculty member at an internationally known university. Lynne Taylor, Associate Professor of Industrial and Physical Pharmacy, Kevin Sowinski, Associate Professor of Pharmacy Prac-tice, and Chris Rochet, Associate Professor of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology, were gracious enough to spend time with our students. At the end of the summer, the research experience concluded with students in the Dean’s and Lilly fellowship programs giving a 15 minute presentation on their research. If you would like to help support a student in this way in the future, please contact Christopher Smith, Director of Advancement, at (765) 494-0501 or [email protected].

“The faculty and graduate program in

the Department of Medicinal Chemistry

and Molecular Pharmacology have provided

me with outstanding scientific training

beyond my expectations. Much of my

success can be attributed to the dedication,

mentorship, and patience the faculty and

my major professor have provided me

throughout the years. The research

environment in the School of Pharmacy

has given me all the tools necessary to

transform from the naïve graduate student

that joined the department in 2003 into

the confident scientist I am today.”

Pharmacy Practice

Wish List

The Department of Pharmacy Practice (PHPR) has compiled a “wish list” of teaching aids which would enhance the education of our students and aid in the needs of the department. If you would like to provide resources for any of the items on the list, or if you have other ideas of how you would like to contribute, please contact Christopher Smith, Director of Advancement, at (765) 494-0501 or [email protected]. Every gift counts, and we thank each and every one of you for your support of the School.

Supply of X-Packs

• Need 1,000 packs which cost ~$7,000

PHPR requests a supply of X-Packs which are specially designed quit smoking kits for college-age students. The department currently has a project running in the School pharmacy where the pharmacy students are providing X-Packs and free tobacco cessation counseling to other students who want to quit smoking. Since last fall, the program has reached over 150 students and many have at least made an attempt to quit smoking. By the end of this academic year, the department will run out of the current supply.

X-Packs Contents

Subscription to GO TO MEETING (www1.gotomeeting.com)

• Flat fee of $468 for one year subscription

The subscription allows colleagues to view each other’s computer screens during a “conference” meeting and makes it easy to share information for collaborative projects.

Stephen Byrn, Charles B. Jordan Professor of Medicinal Chemistry and Head of the Department of Industrial and Physical Pharmacy,

is the recipient of the 2008-09 Outstanding Commercialization Award for Purdue University Faculty. This award is endowed by the Central Indiana Corporate Partnership to honor a Purdue faculty member who has been successful in commercializing their research findings. Byrn is the co-founder of Solid State Chemical Information (SSCI, Inc.), an Aptuit Company, located in Purdue Re-search Park. “SSCI is a real-world example that shows how ideas and strategies devel-oped by faculty can be delivered to the public through the assistance of university research parks that serve as ‘incubators’ for economic development,” says Byrn. Stanley Hem, Associate Head of the Depart-ment of Industrial and Physical Pharmacy, was inducted into the Book of Great Teachers which honors outstanding teaching faculty who have demonstrated sustained excellence in the classroom. The induction took place on August 28, 2008, and 49 faculty were recognized. The induction takes place every five years for professors and former professors who have served on the Purdue faculty at least 10 years. The book, a bronze and walnut wall display in the west foyer of the Purdue Memorial Union, was first unveiled in 1999.

Karen Hudmon, Associ-ate Professor of Pharmacy Practice, was presented the Indiana Public Health Founda-tion’s Excellence in Health

Sciences Research Award at the Foundation’s annual Hulman Awards Dinner in Indianapolis on October 2, 2008. The Indiana Public Health Foundation, Inc. is an independent, public not-for-profit health institute dedicated to promote and protect the health of the individual through education, research and resource management, to achieve a higher quality of life, a healthy environment, and to foster greater knowledge of public health.

Jackie Jimerson, Director of Multicultural Programs, was recognized by the Purdue Black Alumni Association for her efforts in enhancing the success of students, particularly African American and others from targeted under-represented groups. She was awarded

the PBAO Distinguished Staff Member Award for her accomplishments increasing retention and graduation of students in Purdue’s educa-tional programs during her tenure as Director ofMulticultural Programs in the School of Phar-macy and Associate Director of HORIZONS. “Jackie has been tireless in her efforts to assure the success of students from underrepre-sented groups. She has impacted the lives of a generation of Purdue pharmacists in a way that is difficult to measure, but has surely improved the profession,” says Dean Craig Svensson. “I am honored to accept this recognition acknowledging the community in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences whose efforts advance diversity, inclusiveness, and student success,” comments Jimerson.

For those of you who know Dr. Patrick Belcastro—and that’s probably most of you—you already know what a fascinating person he is. His breadth of knowledge about the history and profession of pharmacy can captivate you for hours. But it’s his demeanor—his witty personality, frankness and thought-fulness—that makes him such an amiable man. He’s provided us with so much information about pharmacy over the years that it’s time we take a moment to learn a little more about him. Dr. Belcastro has been Professor Emeritus of Pharmaceu-tics in the Department of Industrial and Physical Pharmacy at Purdue University since 1990. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree at Duquesne University (1942). Following his baccalaureate education, he was employed as an analytical chemist by The Carnegie Illinois Steel Company in McKees-port, Pennsylvania. He was later employed as a community pharmacist for the Walgreen Company in Pittsburgh, and from 1946 to 1949, he taught various pharmaceutics courses at the School of Pharmacy at Duquesne University with the rank of instructor in pharmacy. During World II (1942-1946), he first served as a practicing pharmacist in a patient clearing company with the 89th infantry divi-sion based at Camp Carson, Colorado. From April 1944 to December 1945 he functioned as a hospital pharmacist with the 217th General Hospital in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, then in Swindon, Wilts, in England and in Paris, France. During the Battle of the Bulge in 1944, at maximum capacity this hospital treated as many as 2,300 wounded soldiers. Dr. Belcastro was conferred the Master of Sciences (1951) and Doctor of Philosophy (1953) degrees from Purdue University under the direction of Professors H. George DeKay and John E. Christian. After receiving his doctorate, he was appointed Assistant Professor of Pharmacy at The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy in Columbus, Ohio. While there, he received a phone call from Dean Glenn L. Jenkins asking whether he wanted to join the Purdue faculty. In 1954, he accepted a position at Purdue University where he first served as a full time member of the faculty in the Department of Pharmacy Practice. In 1972, he began serving as Profes-sor of Pharmaceutics in the Department of Industrial and

Spotlight on PATRICK F. BELCASTRO Professor Emeritus, Industrial and Physical Pharmacy

Physical Pharmacy. He taught a variety of courses during his tenure at Purdue. In the year preceding his retirement, he was responsible for teaching the courses in Parenteral Products, Sterile Products Laboratory, and the History of Pharmacy. He continues periodically to teach the History of Pharmacy course. Dr. Belcastro has been a member of several professional, pharmaceutical and honorary organizations including the American Pharmacists Association, American Chemical Society, American Institute of the History of Pharmacy (President 1985-1987), American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, Rho Chi Society, Phi Lambda Upsilon, Sigma Xi, and others. He is also listed in “Who’s Who in America.” In 1963, he married Hanna Jensen in Copenhagen, Denmark. His son, Paul, resides in Bloomington, Indiana, and daughter, Helen, lives in Fremont, California. His spouse and two children each earned a baccalaureate degree from Purdue University.

What first drew you to your interest in pharmacy? Why did you choose this career?“When I was 16 years old, I was ‘hanging out’ with a friend by sitting on the doorsteps located next to our neighborhood pharmacy. It was a warm evening during the month of May. The pharmacist (Mr. Karl Schultz) came out of the store and asked me to deliver a filled prescription to the home of an ill patient. I delivered the prescription, and when I returned he handed me ten cents which was a generous quantity

of money during the depression. Mr. Schultz asked me to return to the store the next evening. He asked me to sweep the floor and perform other chores including washing the mortars and glassware that had been used for compounding prescriptions. In due time, I became a part-time employee in this neighborhood professional pharmacy, and I was trusted with many responsibilities. I learned an enormous amount about the profession of pharmacy. At age 18, there was no doubt about my future. I enrolled as a pharmacy student at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA, and graduated with a baccalaureate degree in pharmacy.”

What are some of the biggest changes you’ve seen in the profession over the years?“I taught pharmacy for 59 years at three different schools of pharmacy. Expanding the length of the pharmacy curriculum from four years to five years (in 1960) and later to six years was a significant development. In the 1950s, the pharma-cist compounded as many as 90% of the prescriptions he dispensed and was not permitted to ‘advise’ patients about the therapeutic properties of the drugs dispensed. Today, the pharmacist compounds very few prescriptions and is trained

almost exclusively to advise patients about all aspects of the drug being dispensed including its therapeutic action and its adverse reactions. Also during the 1950s, only 10% of the pharmacy students were women. Today, about 65% of the pharmacy students are female. These were the most significant changes.”

What have been your greatest joys (and challenges) in working with the students over the years?“To communicate the subject matter that is essential to the practice of pharmacy is a challenge when you have classes composed of a wide variety of students from different cultures and varying abilities. I also tried to inspire students to treat the patient as a human being who needs a sympathetic ear plus information about the drug prescribed to treat his illness. It was a joy when I was also able to convince some students that in essence they should assume an attitude that reflects a certain degree of ‘love’ of their patients.”

What personal information, if any, would you like our audience to know (i.e., hobbies, interesting experiences)?“I collect pharmaceutical antiques which I purchased as I traveled in many countries of Europe. These jars and mortars—if they could talk—could reveal much about the quality of the pharmacists and physicians that visited the community pharmacies over the years. These tools used by pharmacists of the past reveal a great deal of history regarding the practice of pharmacy during previous centuries.”

The Patrick F. Belcastro ScholarshipDr. Patrick Belcastro has served Purdue University and the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences for over half a century. His dedication to his students and the profession of pharmacy has positively influenced the practices of thousands of pharmacists in the State of Indiana and the world, which in turn has influenced the care of hundreds of thousands of patients. It is in his honor that Mary B. Baker (BS 1979) and fellow alumni have established an endowment fund to support merit-based scholarships for students enrolled in the professional practice program in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. To contribute to the Patrick F. Belcastro Scholarship Endowment, please make checks payable to “Purdue Foundation” with Belcastro Fund written in the memo section and mail to the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Purdue University, Heine Pharmacy Building Room 104, 575 Stadium Mall Drive, West Lafayette, IN 47904-2091. CLASS NOTES

1960-1969

Robert Veatch (BS 1961) has published the second edition of Case Studies in Pharmacy Ethics, co-authored with Amy Haddad. He also gave the Gifford Lectures at the University of Edinburgh in May, 2008. The lectures have previously been given by theologians such as Albert Schweitzer and Paul Tillich, philosopher William James, and physicist Warner Heisenberg. He is the first pharmacist to give the lectures in the 122 years of the series.

1970-1979

Michael Ladewski (BS 1979) ([email protected]) retired at the end of September 2008 after 29+ years with Eli Lilly, and in October started with Amylin Pharmaceuticals in Trade & Distribution/National Accounts. Mike also recently celebrated 25 years of marriage with his wife, Laura. Their son is studying physical therapy at Marquette University. Mike enjoys receiving The Purdue Pharmacist, attended homecoming, and is looking forward to Purdue men & women’s basketball—Boiler Up!

This past spring, Robert A. Brown (BS 1951) entered an essay contest designed to recognize people whose lives have been impacted by Ulcerative Colitis (UC). The program sought to acknowledge those who have found personal ways to triumph over the condition and to highlight their stories in ways that educate and inspire both those with and without UC. TheCelebrating UC Success program engages individuals whose lives are impacted by UC to identify these learnings to ongoing patient education activities in the UC community. Bob was selected as one of the seven contest winners. He and a guest, his wife Sondra, were given the opportunity to travel to Washington D.C. in May, 2008, to attend the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America’s (CCFA) 2008 National Advocacy Conference, “IBD Day on the Hill.” Bob was honored, along with the other contest winners, during a dinner reception. Bob grew up helping in his father’s prescription store in Chicago. It was through this experience that Bob realized his calling in life was to follow in his father’s footsteps, and for over 20 years he owned Community Medical Pharmacy in Culver City, California. With only 400 square feet, it was Bob’s personal service and interest in the patient’s welfare that brought his tiny pharmacy more business than any other in the area. Since retiring to Cambria, California, Bob remains active in the community, serving on the local pharmacy association

board, participating in local health fairs, lecturing to senior citizen groups and, of course, practicing pharmacy as a relief pharmacist whenever he is needed by full time pharmacists who need to take some time off. Bob has a strong mindset towards sharing his knowledge and expertise. He believes that nobody gets anywhere without help from others, which is one of the reasons that he gives his help so readily. It’s this passion for caring that landed him as a contestant in the Celebrating UC Success contest. He shared a story of his friend’s daughter who was having trouble dealing with her UC and as a young woman, it was heavily affecting her social life and making her feel depressed. Bob counseled her to talk to her doctor about a prescription, and this suggestion changed her life. She now has her UC under control and has been able to improve her personal relationships because of it. Bob says he was shocked that he won the contest, but most importantly, he was gratified that he was able to help a friend in need. The CCFA, in partnership with Procter & Gamble Pharmaceuticals, sponsored the essay contest. To read more about this, please visit http://www.myucguide.com/uc-success/or http://www.ccfa.org/about/press/CUCS to learn how you could participate in future contests.

Robert E. Taylor (PhD 1972) was appointed as Dean of the College of Medicine at Howard University in January 2008. As dean, he will be

the chief academic officer of the College of Medicine and will be responsible for pro-viding oversight of the academic, financial, and operations performance of the College, and all of its operating units, including the Howard University Faculty Practice Plan. He has served as Interim Dean of the College since August 2005 and Chair of the Department of Pharmacology since 1992. Dr. Taylor is also the Director of the Howard University Alcohol Research Center funded by grants from the NIH.

Kyle Sloan Travels to the OlympicsKyle Sloan (PharmD 2008), along with his family, had an experience of a lifetime during the summer as he witnessed his sister, Bridget, compete at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China. She was a member of the

Team USA Women’s Gymnastics which won a silver medal. Upon finally hearing the news that Bridget had made the team, the family was extremely excited and proud, as well as very relieved for her. “We knew it was a dream and goal of hers to make the team,” says Kyle. To see her work so hard and come so close, they were thankful they didn’t have to see her deal with disappointment. Kyle and Bridget, along with their parents and two other siblings, traveled to China for the two weeks of the games. Bridget remained with her team and coaches the majority of the time in order to minimize distractions, but she did have the opportunity to visit the Great Wall with her family. Kyle also had the opportunity to visit the Forbidden City,Tien’anmen Square, the silk and pearl markets, and the Summer Palace. He comments that the Chinese were very helpful, often going out of their way to help tourists. He enjoyed trying new foods, even though it took some getting accustomed to one person ordering a meal for the entire family. “It is hard to put into words the feelings of awe, excite-ment, pride, anxiety, joy, and empathy for the athletes when you are at the Olympics and watching your sister perform. By far, though, my most memorable day was the women’s team finals and cheering on the girls,” reflects Kyle. A high school sophomore, Bridget has been practicing gymnastics for 12 years. As for her future plans, she is keeping all of her options open for college. As for Kyle, he is enjoying his position as a retail pharmacist for Kmart in Madison, North Carolina. He hopes all of his classmates are enjoying their new careers and life post Purdue and wishes them all the best of luck in their current and future endeavors.
