Phase 3 Phonics Workbook

Helpful hints for parents and practitioners

This book follows the government’s recommended phonics

teaching programme, the Letters and Sounds.

Start at the beginning of the book and try to work through

the activities in order.

Make sure you pronounce the sounds the correct way. There

are many videos on YouTube that can help with that.

You can photocopy the pages that you need and use them as

worksheets with the children.

Keep the sessions short and use lots of praise.

Make your phonics sessions fun and rewarding. Agree on a

small reward for each star (e.g. stickers) and a slightly big-

ger reward for 5 or 10 stars (e.g. a new book).

Here are some other more practical activities that you can

try with your child:

Can you spot your new letter in your story book?

I spy with my little eyes… Is there anything in the room

that begins/ends with your new sound?

Is there anyone in the family who’s name begins with the

new sound?

Can you spot your new letter when you are out shopping?

Be positive and appreciate your child’s hard work!
