Introduction
State of the Chapter Remarks
September 2, 2017
Williams Baptist College Phi Beta Lambda Members,
This year has been very rewarding all due to the hard work
and dedication by this year’s advisors, officers and all of the
members. With 22 members total the end goal is to see each
one not merely compete but advance to the National
Leadership Conference in their respective event.
With Williams Baptist College being a small college campus of 453 students, the PBL chapter is
well known by the students and faculty. Williams Baptist College Phi Beta Lambda not only
competes at the state and national conferences, but also aims to thrive in our school and local
community. These members have dedicated their time to help one another grow individually.
Being a part of the WBC-PBL comes with great responsibility. This group is committed to
continuing the tradition by placing nationally for its twelfth consecutive year.
I want to thank each member in advance for making this year one of the best years in PBL for
me. I truly will miss every member and the laughs that we all shared after graduation. I know
this year will not be a success without the support from my advisors and members. I know that
the members in the future will advance to greater heights and keep Williams Baptist College Phi
Beta Lambda honorable and victorious.
Sincerely,
Luke Carter, 2017-2018 WBC Chapter President.

Recruitment Activities
Each year WBC-PBL officers and members participate in recruiting activities which target both
the current WBC students and future WBC students. Main recruiting events each year include:
the business portion of Freshman Orientation, multiple Preview Days throughout both the fall
and spring semesters, and various Local Chapter parties and other social events. Through our
efforts, we were once again able to gain enough new students to maintain sufficient chapter
membership for the 2017-2018 school year.
4
Freshman Orientation
WBC held an Orientation day on August 21, 2017 before classes began to familiarize new
students with the college. The Business
Department along with WBC-PBL were able to
meet with new students and conduct an informative
session led by a panel of PBL officers, who
presented a Prezi to inform new students about the
activities of campus life, the dynamics of the
Business department, and the benefits available
through PBL. The officers also engaged in a
question and answer session to address any
questions the students may have had. This year 36 new students attended this session.
Preview Days
To further aid in the recruitment of new members, the chapter officers also attended WBC’s
Preview Days, which were held on October 6, October 22, November 3, November 17. Preview
Days are events hosted by the Office of Admissions in which incoming freshman and transfer
students tour the campus and meet the faculty in the department pertaining to their tentative
choice of study. Our officer team shared their experiences in PBL during these events and
noted how PBL had positively impacted their performance both in and outside of the classroom.
PBL Christmas Party
The week before classes were dismissed for Winter Break, the WBC-PBL Chapter had a
Christmas Party on campus. Every member brought an item for a taco
bar to the gathering and a
White Elephant gift for
playing an entertaining
game of Dirty Santa.
Members were
encouraged to invite
friends who were
interested in joining PBL to participate in the fun.
The party was an event that created cohesiveness
among members, introduced other students to the
5
club, and gave everyone a much-needed break from studying for finals.
Leadership Development
WBC-PBL seeks to increase leadership development among its members through a commitment
to providing various projects and events both within the chapter and in the community. Leadership
is a quality the WBC Chapter focuses on instilling in each member though various activities. The
following activates were chosen this year to promote leadership development in participating
members:
Chapter Leadership
Officers were nominated to lead club projects such as the Homecoming t-shirt fundraising event
and the Hunger Awareness dinner.
Oni Robertson, Vice President of Fundraising, was responsible for recruiting chapter members
to help sell the Homecoming t-shirts, and managed the entire project from t-shirt design, to
placing the orders for the t-shirts, and finally delivering them. Mr. Robertson composed a
schedule for volunteers to help sell the shirts, and the students he recruited assisted in
promoting the t-shirts to students, parents, and faculty.
Alec Scott, Vice President of Philanthropy, built a committee of PBL members to help with the
coordination of the Hunger Awareness Dinner, held on February 19, 2018. All proceeds from
this event are donated to Heifer International to assist in their mission to eliminate world hunger.
The success of this dinner has always been important to WBC-PBL and the college as a whole.
Mr. Scott organized a promotion team, set-up crew, a clean-up crew, and a group of students to
collect donations during the dinner. Fresh Ideas, WBC’s cafeteria provider, catered the dinner
upon his request and helped serve those in attendance.
American Enterprise Day
Our chapter increased leadership development among members by participating in American
Enterprise Day on November 16, 2017. WBC-PBL celebrated with local FBLA chapters in
Greene and Lawrence counties during an annual meeting held at the Paragould Country Club.
Our members enjoyed interacting with their high school affiliates during the luncheon and
encouraged them to be involved in PBL once they enter college. Chapter President, Luke
6
Carter, and Vice President of Fundraising, Oni
Robertson, began the luncheon by delivering a
presentation on the PBL chapter at WBC, and
spoke on how PBL had opened doors to many other
opportunities. The WBC-PBL members in
attendance participated in a game with the FBLA
students and appreciated the guest speaker’s
advice on business leadership.
Career Exploration and
Preparation
Career development is an integral part of the college experience at WBC. PBL encourages
activities that promote exploration of multiple disciplines in business and interaction with local
leaders.
Integration of Faith and Business Luncheon
At Williams Baptist College, all Business majors are required to take a Business
Communications class. The course is designed to prepare students for their choice of career by
teaching them how to create a successful résumé, how to use proper etiquette at formal
occasions, and how to effectively communicate orally and in writing in a business setting.
Students were tested on their etiquette during the Integration of Faith and Business Luncheon
hosted on November 15, 2017, in the Moody Dining Hall.
The Integration of Faith and Business Luncheon was an event that allowed Business students
to mingle with influential, Christian business professionals from the surrounding communities.
Guests were served a pork tenderloin lunch provided by the WBC culinary staff, and each
professional was assigned to a table of students to converse with while eating. While
networking, the students in attendance gained direction and insight from individuals who are
successful in their respective fields and active in their church families and ministry. This year’s
Introduction was presented by businessman Dave McClung and businessman Greg Addison
offered the closing remarks.
Internships
WBC also offers three credit hours to juniors and seniors who spend 150 hours in a workplace
of their choice to begin preparing for their future career. These internships give students the
opportunity to experience a real workplace, while allowing them to apply the skills they have
7
learned in the classroom to a real-world setting. WBC has recently partnered with the Allen
Engineering Corporation for internships and future employment opportunities for graduates.
Luke Carter, PBL President, has been given the opportunity to apply the marketing expertise
through his internship at Optus Inc. Mr. Carter assists in developing brand recognition for the
marketing department by creating emails and other digital design promotions while working
amongst other marketing professionals.
Allen Thompson, PBL Director of Competitive Events, holds an internship with Allen
Engineering, an engineering company in Paragould, Arkansas. Mr. Allen works in the
Accounting Department where he matches invoices to packing slips and posts both the invoices
and freight bills to the company’s system.
Betsy Ryan, PBL Secretary, is also using the knowledge she has gained at WBC in an
internship with Allen Engineering’s Human Resource Department. Miss Ryan updates, creates
and organizes all employee files, scans documents into the system, and prepares information
packets for employees.
Bobby Hatfield, PBL member, who plans to attend law school after earning his bachelor’s
degree in business administration, has been privileged to obtain an internship working with the
city attorney Nancy Hall at Hall Law Firm in Walnut Ridge Arkansas. He is applying the skills he
has learned while also gaining new knowledge of the legal industry through his work with
uncontested divorces, small claims lawsuits, and property settlement agreements cases. Mr.
Hatfield has also has gotten first-hand experience in process serving and court filing.
Noah Stoddard, Director of Communications, is gaining real-world business experience at State
Farm in Walnut Ridge Arkansas where he has been given the
responsibilities of servicing current accounts, aiding clients in
financial planning, writing new business, and finalizing end of the
day deposits
Business Partnerships
WBC-PBL has formed partnerships with local businesses that offer
intern positions to students who are interested in gaining
experience in a real-world business environment. These
companies include: Allen Engineering in Paragould, Arkansas,
State Farm in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, Optus in Jonesboro,
Arkansas, and Hall Law Firm in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas. Besides
supplying a WBC-PBL student with an internship, City Attorney, Nancy Hall, participated in a
8
local chapter meeting when she came and shared her knowledge on February 7, 2018. In
addition to the partnerships with local businesses, WBC-PBL partners with the Arkansas Baptist
Convention. Besides their monetary support, and internship opportunities, members of the
conventions gather in Little Rock every year on the first night of the Arkansas PBL State
Conference and provide and share a dinner with the WBC-PBL state competitors.
Chapter Fundraising
Designing and selling the Homecoming t-shirts is the main fundraising event for WBC-PBL.
Each year the club receives favorable comments from faculty and staff about how the t-shirts
help to generate school spirit. This fundraising activity also benefits both the student body and
their families, as parents and students are able to purchase a souvenir/keepsake during the
Homecoming festivities. The responsibilities for selling t-shirts
were divided among members who volunteered to participate,
and specific officers were assigned various aspects of the
fundraising project. Oni Robertson, the chapter Vice President
of Fundraising, was responsible for designing the shirts,
collecting all funds, and recruiting club volunteers to help sell.
For $12.00, the classic short-sleeve tee was sold in a bright
blue and yellow color, and for $20.00, our chapter offered a
grey, long-sleeve shirt. Each shirt, regardless of color or style,
featured a Williams’ logo on the front, and the back of the shirt
featured a Williams’ family crest. Club members sold multiple
shirts by manning a table at the entrance of the cafeteria during
the weeks leading up to Homecoming, and also participated by persuading friends to buy and
doing “door-to-door” selling throughout the administration buildings on campus. Members ran
out of shirts from the first shipment and had to take orders from those wanting shirts of a color
or size that were temporarily not available. On Homecoming Day club members volunteered
their time again to sell shirts at the Business Department Alumni Reunion.
The grand total of shirts purchased by students and alumni amounted to $1,520. The profit
generated from the t-shirt sales will help funds this year’s registration fees for the National
Leadership Conference in Baltimore, MD this coming summer. The following is the financial
summary of the revenues and expenses associated with this year’s chapter fundraising:
9
WBC-PBL 2016-2017
Projected Income/Cash Flow Statement
T-shirt Revenue $1,520.00
T-shirt Expenses ($1,030.32)
Net Profit $489.68

their time to participate as judges at the local FBLA District Conference Competitions on
January 25, 2018. PBL Advisor Heather Parson met Mr. Stoddard and Mr. Majors at Nettleton
High School in Jonesboro, Arkansas, where the event was held.
11
Other Community Service Projects Community service is a top priority to the students of the Williams Baptist College Phi Beta
Lambda chapter. Members of the WBC-PBL chapter feel strongly about local and global needs.
During the 2017-2018 year, WBC-PBL have participated in numerous community service
projects including the Backpack for Kids Program, Make-A-Wish and Ronald McDonald House
Aluminum Can Drive, and the Annual Hunger Awareness Dinner.
Backpack for Kids Program
During the fall and spring semesters, WBC-PBL collected kid-
friendly, nonperishable food items to distribute to students in
North Arkansas who participate in the Backpacks for Kids
Program, a local endeavor that supplies needy children with
enough food to sustain them while away from school.
The WBC-PBL members
encourage other students
outside the club to participate
as well to help reach as many
kids as possible through this
excellent program. This year the
months of September, October, and February were designated collection months. The above
table shows what items were collected and the amount donated in these months.
Trash Pickup
A group of five WBC-PBL members donated two
and a half hours of community service on
November 9, 2017 when they collected trash along
highway 67. The trash pickup was organized by
Alec Scott, Vice President of Philanthropy.
2017-2018 Backpack for Kids Program
Month Food Focus Amount Donated
September Easy Mac 252 cups
October Pop-Tarts 1,388 toaster pastries
February Pudding cups 466 cups
February Chef Boyardee 293 cups
12
Make-A-Wish and Ronald McDonald House Aluminum Can Drive
During the spring semester, WBC-PBL members collected
aluminum cans to donate to the Make-A-Wish Foundation and
Ronald McDonald House. A total of 826 cans were collected from
students and faculty on campus. The tabs from the collected cans
will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House when the chapter
attends the State Leadership Conference in April 2018. The
proceeds from the cans, in addition to the chapter’s personal
donations totaled $50.00 and was donated to the Make-A-Wish
Foundation.
Annual Hunger Awareness Dinner
This marks the eighth year for WBC-PBL to host the Annual Hunger Awareness dinner, in
conjunction with the non-profit organization Heifer International. Heifer International is a faith-
based ministry headquartered in Little Rock,
Arkansas, whose vision is to work with
communities to end world hunger and poverty and
to care for the earth. Alec Scott, Vice President of
Philanthropy, was responsible for organizing the
event. The committee of philanthropy assisted him
before and during the event. Mr. Scott worked
with WBC’s Campus Ministries and the Fresh
Ideas food service to provide a meal for the
evening. The cost of admission was $1 for students and $5 for all other guests, and many who
were unable to attend donated by other means.
The dining area was divided into three sections. There was a small “first-world” section with a
covered table, ceramic plates, and glass cups, a slightly larger “second-world” section with
simple tables and chairs, and a very large “third-world” area with just chairs. As guests paid for
their tickets, they were seated by a host/hostess in one of the three sections designated to
them. The purpose was to show visually how the majority of people in the world live in poverty.
This theme carried over into the meal as well. The “first-world” guests went through the buffet
line first and had the option to choose from all the dishes. The “second-world” guests were not
allowed meat, and by the time the “third-world’’ guests went through the line, the only food
option was black beans.
13
Mr. Scott and member Davis Fetzer delivered a short presentation explaining what Heifer
International does and how others can join them to fight
world hunger. They then added a little entertainment to the
evening by giving interesting facts about the types of
animals and vegetable Heifer International shares with the
world. Later in the event, Campus minister, Hayes Howell
educated the students about how they can help end
hunger in their own area by volunteering at the First
Baptist Church in Walnut Ridge food pantry. He then
delivered a short message. All who came had the
opportunity to partner with Heifer International to help end world hunger and helped raise
$315.00 with 75 in attendance.
Conference and Recognition
Participation in PBL Conferences
