  • PHILIPPINES Typhoon NesatSeptember 2011MANILA, Philippines (AP) -- Typhoon Nesat, packing winds of up to 100 mph, made landfall before dawn Tuesday in northeastern Luzon, the Philippines largest island, leaving a trail of flooding and devastation in its wake. The violent storm later lost strength and moved out to sea, heading toward southern China.

Forecasters sounded alarms over a new storm headed for the Philippines Wednesday, even as workers repaired seawalls demolished by a typhoon that killed at least 43 people, 35 people missing and left scores stranded in swamped communities. Residents wade through chest-deep floodwaters after massive flooding north of Manila.
