Philipsburg Heritage Days

Philipsburg Heritage Days is a community festival that is intended to promote the Philipsburg

area to visitors and residents by offering programs and events attractive to all audiences.

Heritage Days has been in existence since 1998, and the annual festival has become the

premiere week for graduating classes of the Philipsburg, and Philipsburg-Osceola High School

to hold reunions. We have also seen a significant number of family reunions planned around

Heritage Days. It is estimated that 16,000 people visit the Philipsburg Area during Heritage

Days. Heritage Days 2011 is July 12-17, 2011. www.PhilipsburgHeritageDays.com

Philipsburg History

If you are interested in history, you have to check out Philipsburg’s National Register Historic

District. The Philipsburg National Register Historic District consists of magnificent churches,

dozens of beautiful Victorian style homes along Centre and Presqueisle Streets and the diverse

brick architecture of Front Street. The Philipsburg Historical Foundation Museum located on the

third floor of the Moshannon Building on Front Street showcases artifacts, photographs and

maps of Philipsburg’s past. Philipsburg’s history, however, is not limited to the Historic District.

The current site of the Moshannon Valley Enterprise Center Incubator was once the largest

cigar production facility in the United States. To learn more about Heritage Travel and our

community visit www.Gozaic.com .

The recently restored Simler House located on the corner of Second and Laurel Streets was the home of one of the original settlers of the Moshannon Valley. The Old Union Church on Presqueisle Street was built in 1820 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Every summer, Philipsburg celebrates its history with Heritage Days. This annual event draws more than 16,000 people to Philipsburg to celebrate.

From Philipsburg’s oldest building, the Simler House, to many of its most modern buildings, the

architecture of this Central Pennsylvania community showcases its heritage. Philipsburg has

four buildings on the National Register of Historic Places including the Rowland Theatre which

boasts the largest movie screen in Central Pennsylvania. The industrial heritage of the

Moshannon Valley has always been able to change with the times, going from the early days of

lumbering, through periods of mining, brick making, clothing and other manufacturing, and food

processing. Front Street in Philipsburg is a beautiful and diverse shopping district consisting of

myriad styles of brick buildings. Thanks to the efforts of hundreds of politicians, businesspeople,

property owners, and other concerned citizens, the community’s well-built architecture is being

preserved and renovated to return Philipsburg to its status as the premier crossroads of Central

Pennsylvania. Both Residential and Downtown Walking Tours have been compiled and are self

guided. They are available on our website. Find out more about the Philipsburg area at
