Moreland MailDear Parents & Carers,

It is with excitement that I share the new Moreland Primary School Vision, Mission and Values statement with the community. It has been a privilege to work with staff, students and parents to finalise this work.

...Moreland Primary School is committed to educating the whole child in order for them to succeed in life and become socially responsible, positive contributors to their community and the world.

At Moreland Primary School our vision is to be a community of inclusive, innovative and inspired learners.

Our mission is to:● Create a culture of shared goals, trust and high expectations for all.● Embrace an environment that is open, safe and welcoming. ● Promote and develop student voice and agency to drive action.● Provide an engaging and challenging curriculum which promotes exploration, risk-taking and creativity.

Student Achievement Awards

Supporting the MPS Vision and Mission are three core values: ● Respect, appreciating diversity and being

considerate of how people think and live;● Responsibility, empowering students to take

ownership of their learning and actions; and● Resilience, continually strengthening our

capacity to understand challenges and create new possibilities.

These values drive our culture of positive relationships, diversity and empowerment and convey the beliefs that positively influence our behaviour and the way we interact with individuals, groups and communities.

As part of this process a new School Values and Philosophy Policy has been written and is now available to access on the school website.

I would also like to share with the community that, at this stage, there will be no Japanese / Science subject next year. This position has been advertised multiple times with no appointment and no applicants. It is unfortunate, however there will still be Japanese / Visual Arts to continue the Japanese program. It is also important to note that students will be engaged in deep learning of the Science curriculum through the Pick My Project program in 2019.

Staffing for 2019 is almost finalised with two more teachers still to be appointed. The Home Group structure is included in this newsletter.

Moreland MailSpecial recognition for Aaron: Moreland primary school students often go above and beyond in different ways and in particular, one such student is Aaron O’Riley. Aaron provided the impetus and became the driving force for a lot of our immediate and wider school community to raise a significant amount of money which has been donated to the Peter MacCallum institute. Aaron decided, as a way to support his beautiful mum Nadine when she lost all her hair because of the treatment she was undergoing, that he would shave his hair off so that Nadine was not the only person in the family without hair. With the help of his teachers, classmates, family and extended family, on the last day of Term 3 this year, Thomas O’Halloran assumed the role of hairdresser, and gave Aaron a number 2 cut. Not a bad job at all.

Lots of Aaron’s family and friends witnessed this event which made it all the more special. Through this selfless act, aaron has managed to raise in excess of $5,000 towards cancer research with the hope that one day in the future, no lives will be lost to this disease. Aaron it is a very admirable act on your part, full of love for your mum and one that everyone at MPS is extremely proud of because you went above and beyond for your mum. Congratulations.

Special Achievement

Congratulations to MPS student Charlie for earning his Grey Wolf Badge in Scouts.

Only a small percentage Scout participants reach this level and it demonstrates Charlies initiative, self-discipline, teamwork and leadership. Well done!

2019 Japanese Exchange Students - Host families no longer needed In 2019 we will be not be having three Japanese exchange students from Tokyo attending our school as we have had for the past few years. We realise that hosting a student is a big commitment and would like to say arigatou gozaimasu to the families that volunteered this year and in the past. We taking a year off from hosting students and will resume the program in 2020. It is with a heavy heart that we will not see the return of Tomoki-kun, however, we look forward to meeting new students in 2020.
