The brief

Develop an online prototype planning tool that:

Offers both flexible and guided paths through the planning process Provide access models and examples of innovative learning designs

Emphasis on proof of concept, not polished product

Key design issuesoriginally identified

ContentKeeping the volume under controlDetermining what is/isn’t a “good” exampleAccess: no. of clicks, interoperability, forms of representation

Relevance to usersWill it meet their needs in terms of

• Their planning practice?• Their subject area?

Will they want to use it?

SustainabilityCurrency of examplesIntegrity of links

Additional key design issues from PIs

ContentPreference for examples sourced locally or from known individuals

• But acknowledgement that “only invented here” has limitations

Utility of “generic” examples or examples from other domains• No consensus

Lack of consistency in “naming of parts”Lesson vs. learning session vs. unit of learning vs. …?Challenge to map concepts/terms as (spontaneously) framed by practitioners to categories devised in LD/D4L

Need to support institution-specific models of learningTool may work best if integrated into institution staff development/e-learning dissemination programmes

Implications for supporting the lone practitioner

Design concepts

Respect for users’ expertiseHelping them to plan technology-mediated learning, not teaching them how to plan

Community artefactTo be relevant, tool must be ‘owned’ by its usersCustomisable by institution/department

Implementation through social software‘Wiki within a wiki’

Underlying models of D4L processEffective Practice bookletTemplates and mapping tables (for LADIE?)Learning Design Tools project data

Paths: Designer’s sandpit

Functionality: Prototype

With grateful thanks to the other D4L projects who have permitted us (knowingly or otherwise) to use their sequences for examples.

Path scenario 1:I want learners to do a particular activity. What tool could they use?Activity = modelling the behaviour of fish in schools

Path scenario 2:I’ve heard about a particular technology. How could I, or my students, use it?Technology = wikis

Path scenario 3:I have a particular learning outcome in mind. What sort of activity sequence could I create?Learning outcome = understanding the concept of e-learning
