Miheer Mhatre (Princeton ’11)Chair, Ivy Sports Symposium Planning Committee andPresident, Princeton Sports Business Club
Greetings,
On behalf of the Ivy Sports Symposium Planning Committee and the Ivy Sports Symposium Advisory Committee, it is our great pleasure to welcome you to the 2010 Ivy Sports Symposium. This year’s symposium is the fifth installment of an event that has become an annual landmark in the sports industry and on Princeton University’s campus.
Since 2006, the Ivy Sports Symposium has assembled the most knowledgeable and successful professionals in the sports industry to discuss the most engaging topics in business today. Speakers from around the world also share information about their own experiences by providing insight into their successful careers, allowing attendees to obtain a unique glimpse into the vast potential of the business of sports.
The symposium was founded to provide a forum where students and professionals can interact and acquire invaluable knowledge about this fast-growing industry. We trust that today’s event will give you an opportunity to learn from and network with some of the most accomplished sports professionals, as well as to explore the industry’s vast career options and opportunities.
This year’s Ivy Sports Symposium is hosted by the Princeton Sports Business Club, a student organization at Princeton University dedicated to actively engaging undergraduates with the multi-faceted sports industry. The Princeton Sports Business Club is part of the newly-founded Ivy Sports Business Network, which facilitates networking and professional development among Ivy League students, alumni and professionals.
As of 2010, the Ivy Sports Symposium is held in conjunction with the Ivy Sports Business Network. Following this year, the Symposium will rotate amongst the Ivy League schools, with the goal of returning to Princeton every five years.
This conference would not have been possible without the generosity of our sponsors and supporters. We would like to thank Princeton University for its continuous support in making this event possible. We would also like to thank Christopher Lencheski and his team at Phoenicia Sport & Entertainment for their tremendous support.
Again, welcome to the 2010 Ivy Sports Symposium. We sincerely hope you enjoy this remarkable event!
Warmly,
Greetings,
On behalf of Phoenicia Sport & Entertainment and everyone involved in the fifth annual Ivy Sports Symposium, I wanted to welcome you to this year's event.
The Symposium, founded and still run by Princeton alum Chris Chaney, continues to grow every year, and is truly one of unique events in sports and entertainment marketing.
Today’s agenda combines many of the most visionary leaders in the business with some of the industry’s rising stars in a fast-paced and informative format, whether you are involved in an established business or a person looking to find out what new opportunities are on the horizon.
As someone who has spent over 20 years in the industry, I know we are always looking for new ideas, facing new challenges and striving for innovation. While many of these type of events provide the same speakers and information, this event is always looking to provide what’s next, in a setting here at Princeton that is reflective of that spirit of innovation that has fueled this institution since its founding.
We at Phoenicia Sport & Entertainment are proud to be part of the team, and are looking forward to helping grow the event beyond its current boundaries in the future.
Thanks for taking the time from your busy schedule to join us today. We hope you have an informative and enlightening experience, and are looking forward to your feedback.
Enjoy the day and let us know what you think – [email protected].

David Falk, the founder and chief executive officer of Falk Associates Management Enterprises (FAME), has long been recognized as one of the sports industry’s leading figures and most talented innovators. He has represented the top players in NBA history and has negotiated record-breaking contracts for his clients, both on and off the court.
Falk began his career representing professional athletes with ProServ in 1974, rising to vice chairman of the company. He left ProServ in 1992 to form Falk Associates Management Enterprises. During his career, Falk has represented more NBA first-round draft selections, lottery picks, rookies of the year, and all-stars than anyone else in the athlete management business.
Falk negotiated the highest contracts in NBA league history for Patrick Ewing (New York Knicks) in 1985 and Danny Ferry (Cleveland Cavaliers) in 1990. He negotiated professional sports’ first $100 million contract in 1996 for Alonzo Mourning as part of an unprecedented free agency period in which FAME changed the entire salary structure of the NBA, negotiating over $400 million in contracts for its free agent clients in a six-day period. In 1985, he negotiated Michael Jordan’s ground-breaking deal with Nike, which is the most successful endorsement relationship in history, and in the process coined the nickname “Air Jordan.” In 1996, Falk crossed over into entertainment as he executive produced the Ivan Reitman/Warner Bros. feature “Space Jam,” Michael Jordan's first film, teaming Jordan with the Looney Tunes in an intergalactic basketball showdown.
In 1998, Falk sold FAME to SFX Entertainment. Falk is ranked second, behind NBA Commissioner David Stern in a Basketball Digest survey of the most influential people in basketball. He has been a perennial selection to The Sporting News’ “100 Most Powerful People in Sports.”
Falk is a founding investor in Marquis Jet, a private aviation company, Golf GCX Partners, and is a founder and principal in Pokeware, a digital alternative advertising company. A 1972 honors graduate of Syracuse University with a B.A. in economics, the 59-year-old New York native received a J.D. with honors from the National Law Center at George Washington University in 1975. Falk founded and endowed The David Falk Center for Sports Management at Syracuse University. He recently released his first book, “The Bald Truth.”
Falk has served as chairman of the annual Sports-a-Thon to benefit the Leukemia Society of America, raising over two million dollars over the past eleven years. He is on the Board of Trustees for Syracuse University and the Board of Advisors for George Washington University’s National Law Center. Falk is also a member of The Congressional Awards, the official charity of the U.S. Congress. He and his wife, the former Rhonda Frank, live in Rockville, Maryland, and have two daughters, Daina and Jocelyn.

Gary Bettman has served the National Hockey League (NHL) as Commissioner since February 1, 1993 and has guided the world’s top professional hockey league through nearly two decades of growth and advancement – on the ice and off. Record revenues, record attendance and a variety of fan-friendly initiatives are just a few trademarks of Commissioner Bettman’s tenure. The innovation of the Winter Classic outdoor game has turned New Year’s Day into a celebration of hockey. The implementation of four-on-four overtime and the “shootout” eliminated tied games during the regular season. The implementation of the two-referee system has revolutionized hockey officiating around the world.
Exclusive, original content on the League’s NHL.com website provides fans with original stories, highlights and videos, while the Game Center Live subscription service on NHL.com affords fans the opportunity to watch up to four regular-season games simultaneously and offers such features as “picture in picture,” a DVR function and variable bit-rate streaming options to optimize video quality. NHL.com is one of several progressive digital elements mandated by the Commissioner to serve the fans on their terms – wherever they are, through the medium of their choice. NHL Ice Time allows fans to use their mobile devices to access schedules, scores, stats, live audio, video highlights and condensed games.
NHL Network provides viewers in the U.S. and Canada with original programming from the League. In addition, NHL Radio on Sirius XM satellite radio provides fans with expert analysis, interviews with the sport’s newsmakers, and, during the season, a weekly opportunity to speak directly to the Commissioner during his show, “NHL Hour with Commissioner Gary Bettman.”
When he assumed office, NHL teams competed in 11 U.S. markets. In the years since, that number has more than doubled to 30.
Commissioner Bettman negotiated a cable broadcast agreement with Comcast/Versus that provided rights fees in excess of $200 million over the first three seasons and created a variety of promotional and new media opportunities. Mr. Bettman returned broadcasts of NHL games to national over-the-air network television in the U.S. for the first time in 20 years.
Charitable undertakings also have been at the forefront of Commissioner Bettman’s tenure. “Hockey Fights Cancer,” created last December, has helped to raise millions in support of cancer research and awareness. Mr. Bettman also prioritized building the sport’s fan base through grassroots initiatives that bring hockey to youngsters. These programs include “Hockey is for Everyone,” a part of the NHL Foundation, the NHL’s charitable and community relations organization and a major component of the League’s youth hockey programming.
Before being named NHL Commissioner, Mr. Bettman served twelve years with the National Basketball Association, attaining the position of senior vice president and general counsel. Prior to that, he was associated with the New York law firm of Proskauer Rose Goetz & Mendelsohn.
A native of Queens, NY, he graduated from Cornell University and the New York University School of Law. Mr. Bettman lives in New Jersey with his wife, Shelli. The couple has three adult children.
