Foresthaven Secondary School pupils, amongthem matriculants who were about to write theirMathematics examination, were left traumatisedand fearing for their lives after being rushed tothe school grounds following a bomb threat, lastThursday. At around 8am, the school received a call statingthat an explosive device was placed on theschool premises. The school then invoked theschool’s standard emergency evacuation plan
and pupils were assembled in the schoolgrounds. While the nervous pupils waited at the assemblypoint and concerned parents gathered outsidethe school, Phoenix SAPS, Metro Police, localsecurity companies and the SAPS BombDisposal Unit had arrived. After a thoroughinspection of the school by bomb disposalexperts and sniffer dogs which took hours, nodevice was discovered and the all clear was

given for the school to return to normal.Management at the school decided to postponethe Mathematics exam until Thursday, June 21.The school was dismissed at 11am with pupilsclaiming that they were afraid to return to classafter the bomb threat. No injuries were reportedduring the ordeal.A number of parents assembled outside theschool gates and expressed dissatisfaction withthe incident. “There is always a problem at thisschool. Pupils walk all over the teachers andcreate incidents to skip school. They can oftenbe found hanging in the area long before schoolcloses for the day,” said a concerned parent. Principal of the school, Mrs N Naidoo, addressed the assembled parents. “When we
received the call about the bomb threat, we hadto take precautions. We suspected it could havebeen one of the matric pupils trying to get out oftoday’s exam, but we had to take the requiredprecautions to evacuate the school and call in theSAPS. These calls cannot be ignored.”Communications officer of Phoenix SAPS, CptLouise Naidoo, said, “The school received ananonymous call about an explosive device plant-ed in the school yard. The SAPS Bomb Squadand the bomb disposal dog were dispatched tothe scene. A thorough search was conducted andno bomb was detected. Bomb threats are takenvery seriously. Calling in false bomb reports isan offence.”

A family inRoundfern, Phoenix, has come under attackby a swarm of beeswhich have made theirhive in their back yard. The bees have been
responsible for sting-ing family membersmultiple times andhave even killed thefamily’s pair of pit-bulls.S ix ty-s ix-year-o ldhomeowner KathijaMohamoed said thecreatures have been aclear and present dan-ger since their hivewas discovered in alarge tool box at theback of the homemonths ago.“The horrible insectshave been tormentingus. My son and I havebeen stung multipletimes. Yasseen is men-tally challenged andreacts with panic tothe stings,” saidMohamoed. The bees are alsoresponsible for thefatal attack on the theirdogs as well as theneighbour’s dog. “Mybeloved pitbulls weretaken from me by thebees. Earlier this year, one on my dogs wascurious about thebuzzing sound in thebox and went over toinspect it. The beesmust have thought itwas a threat becausethey attacked andstung him mercilessly. My other dog rushedto his side and also gotstung in the mayhem. They swarmed mydogs, which tried toget away by runninginto my neighbour’syard. The bees just fol-
lowed him andattacked the neigh-bour’s dog as well. Allthree pets were leftdead.”Mohamoed also point-ed out that the beeskilled a number ofstray animals andbirds who wanderedtoo close to the toolbox. The family said theymade multipleattempts to remove thebox themselves butwere unsuccessful.“The bees are tooaggressive. We can’tremove them our-selves nor can weafford the price askedby professional animalhandlers and are left tosuffer with theseinvaders,” she said. Theunis van Derdyver, vice president at SAPest ControlAssociation, said,“Bees are a very sensi-tive matter. Bees areessential to our envi-ronment for the properpollination of plants. As such they are pro-tected and hives can-not be destroyed, onlymoved. Adding to theproblem is that beesare aggressive territor-ial animals. To removebees, it is best to callin a professional beekeeper who willsmoke out the hiveand capture the queenbefore safely movingher to another loca-tion. If unwanted beesare found on yourproperty you couldmix dish washing liq-uid and water to asoapy consistencythen place the mixturein a spray bottle and

Local Phoenix musician, RonnieSigamoney, will be releasing a new CDentitled, ‘Originals by RonnieSigamoney.’ The 44-year-old Sunfordresident is known for the release of hisfirst CD during his incarceration formurder and attempted murder. In 2000, Sigamoney was convicted ofmurder and attempted murder stem-ming from a heated argument. Duringhis time in prison, Sigamoney put hisskills with a guitar to good use support-ing his family while serving his sen-tence. “Growing up in Chatsworth and laterPhoenix in the 70’s, still teenagers andbefore the luxuries of social media andtelevision, our pass time as friends wastoo meet and play the guitar whilesinging the latest songs which welearned to play. I was just learning toplay the guitar at the time. I came upwith some catchy songs. I sang aboutmy friends, my late brother and the
experiences of my youth. Through theyears, I’ve kept writing music eventu-ally writing around 60 songs which I
called my silly songs,” saidSigamoney.During his incarceration, Sigamoneyhad time to focus on creative pursuits, developing a custom made air brushpump. He began creating greetingcards and other artwork which weresold to pastors visiting the prison. Itwas during this time that Sigamoneyalso focused on his music, working onhis first CD - a gospel album releasedin 2007. It is through sale of his art-work and his CD that Sigamoney wasable to provide money to his familywhile incarcerated. “I am hoping tocomplete four more CDs so that mylyrics and tunes will be rememberedlong after I’m gone. That is my dream,”said the musician.Sigamoney will be giving away fivecopies of his new CD ‘Original.’ Forfurther information, contactSigamoney on 078-644-7771.

Chairman of the Chatsworth andDistrict Federation and project co-ordinator for the Mandela Day 67minutes, Teddy Govender, said thereis already a buzz and excitement isbuilding up with the two projects.Govender said, “We are encouragingschools and businesses to spend 67minutes and more of their time inmaking a difference in the communi-ty. Our former president was a practi-cal and powerful leader who alwaysled by example. Our community isbecoming very filthy. People have noregard for empty spaces and justdump their rubbish on vacant plots. We need to start educating our peopleabout illegal dumping. We hope tostart this on Mandela Day by gettingpupils from all Chatsworth schools
and the community to get involved inthe clean-up campaign.” Khayelihle Hlatswayo of HeadstartSkills and Orientation, said that theday will also include a sports day for100 underprivileged children. “Sinceit’s the 100th birth anniversary ofNelson Mandela this year, we want touplift and motivate 100 underprivi-leged children through the medium ofsport. children with life skills, characterbuilding and promoting a healthylifestyle to allow for a competitiveedge in life and in their futurecareers,” he said.In order to host a day like this for thechildren and make it a successful one,an appeal is being made to businessesand the community to help sponsortowards food, transport for the chil-dren, items for the goodie bags, T-shirts and caps, and other necessaryitems which will be needed to makethe day a success. A call is also being made to schoolsand businesses to join in on the dayand show their support. In light of the recent fatal hijackingincidents that have devastated theKwaZulu-Natal community, residentsare urged to remain vigilant. Beingaware of your surroundings is perhapsone of the best ways to avoid a potentialhijacking, according to a local securitycompany.“Always make sure you know exactlywhat is happening around your vehicleso that you can see any danger comingbefore it is too late,” said the company’sKwaZulu-Natal district manager, IvanGovender.Govender recommended followingthese preventative guidelines:• When parking, reverse park for aquick exit (also at home!)• Always be particularly vigilant when
you leave a shopping centre. Hijackerscould have spotters working in the cen-tre to be alert for any big purchases orcash withdrawals• Keep your car keys on hand whenapproaching your vehicle, do not fum-ble in your handbag as this shows youare off guard• Look out for any suspicious objectsnear your car before getting in• If you suspect you are being followed, put your indicator on and slow down atleast two to three houses prior to yourhome. If you are being followed, youwill force the vehicle behind you to passand this could cause the criminals tolose interest• Always make sure you can see theback wheels of the car in front of youwhen you stop in the traffic. This gives
you enough room to maneuver andescape• Adjust your speed when approaching atraffic light so that you do not have tocome to a complete stop where at allpossible• Change your driving route and rou-tines• Always remain vigilant whenapproaching home. Research shows thatmost people relax the closer they get tohome and this is often when they are
most vulnerable• Be on the lookout for people standingnear your gate or driveway and ensurethat the area around your gate or drive-way is well lit• Phone ahead to give a relative orfriend your expected time of arrival• Get to know your neighbours and thecars they drive. This will help to identi-fy any uncommon vehicles in your areaWhat should you do if you do find your-self face-to-face with a hijacker?“The golden rule is to not antagonise
the hijackers, who are probably morescared than you are. You need to showthem you are not a threat. Lift up yourarms to show you have no weapon andwill surrender. Use your left arm toundo your seatbelt and put your car inneutral,” said Govender.Do not turn off your car, he explained, and get out slowly.“Try and angle your body sideways soyou are not facing a firearm head-on.Also remember to protect your headwith your arms and avoid direct eyecontact with the hijackers but try to takein as much information as possible, such as what they are wearing, and thesound of their voices. Most importantly, try to remain calm,” he added.Govender explained that there are sevengolden rules to follow if you are heldup:• Remain calm• Do not argue• Do not make sudden gestures• Avoid eye contact but try to rememberwhat the carjacker looked like by iden-tifying and remembering special fea-tures• Comply with the hijackers directions(within reason)• Try and get away from the area asquickly as possibleDon’t be a hero – your life is worthmore than your car!“We encourage the community to be asproactive as possible and recommendhaving a remote panic on hand in caseyou encounter an emergency at yourfront gate,” concluded Govender.

Unveiled at the Geneva Motor Showfour years ago, Fiat-ChryslerAutomobiles (FCA) owned Jeep has
pulled back the covers to the reveal thefacelifted Renegade.Heading for dealership floors in September andreportedly only expected to be replaced by acompletely brand-new model in 2022, exteriorchanges to the Renegade includes new alloywheels with sizes ranging from 16 to 19-inches,new blacked-out headlights with daytime run-ning LEDs, a redesigned front bumper and thecase of the Limited and off-road focusedTrailhawk models, new X motif taillights withLED clusters.Less noticeable, the interior now benefits from awireless smartphone charging pad, new cuphold-ers and storage areas, while the optional 8.4-inchUConnect infotainment system gains both AppleCarPlay and Android.More prominent is the Renegade’s new line ofsafety equipment, namely Lane Keep Warning,
Traffic Sign Recognition, Lane Keep Assist,Forward Collision Warning with AutomaticEmergency Braking, Blind Spot MonitoringAdaptive Cruise Control, Rear Cross TrafficAlert and Park Assist. The biggest change is reserved for underneaththe bonnet though, where the previous 1.4-litreMultiAir and normally aspirated 1.6-litre E.torqpetrol mills fall away in favour of new 1.0-litrethree-cylinder turbo producing 88kW/190Nm,and a 1.3-litre making 110kW or 132kW withtorque for both being 270Nm.While a six-speed manual gearbox is standardfare on the triple, the 1.3 offers the option of twoautomatic ‘boxes, a seven-speed dual-clutch onthe 110kW variant and a nine-speed torque con-verter on the 132kW model, which also comeswith all-wheel drive as standard. No word on thebigger normally aspirated 2.4-litre Tigersharkpetrol mill was however mentioned. On the diesel front, the existing Fiat sourced 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre MultiJet units will continue
Jeep Renegade puts on a more aggressive face
unchanged power-wise with respective outputsof 88kW/320Nm and 103kW or 125kW with350Nm, although both do benefit from selectivecatalytic reduction technology to comply withEuro6 emissions regulations.
In Europe, the Renegade will be offered in fourtrim levels; Sport, Longitude, Limited andTrailhawk with local availability expected to beannounced only after it has debuted on the OldContinent.

July 26th, Mazda hasrevealed spec detailsfor the updated MX-5Roadster and thehardtop MX-5 RF.Aesthetically, both mod-els remain unchangedsans the option of 16-inch alloy wheels with ablack finish, while theinterior gets a new tele-scopic steering wheel, updated TFT display, tan leather finish, brownsoft-top hue and as partof the automaker’sSafety Sense system, Smart City Braking,Traffic Sign Recognition, Lane DepartureWarning and Driver Attention Alert. The biggest change comes underneath the bon-net, where the 2.0-litre SkyActiv-G petrol enginereceives lighter new pistons and connectingrods, a dual-mass flywheel, a wider exhaust andnew valves as well as a redline raised from6 800rpm to 7 500rpm.Falling in-line with Mazda’s Gram Strategy
aimed at cutting down weight, the changes hasresulted in a power hike from 118kW to 137kW,with torque increasing marginally from 200Nmto 205Nm. As ever, a six-speed manual gearboxis standard with a similar ratio automatic option-al.With Mazda South Africa having quietly pulledthe Roadster from its line-up earlier this yearthus leaving only the RF, it remains to be seenwhether the updated model will be earmarkedfor local introduction later this year.

We live in a society where people with debt, fear theopinion of others more than the actual consequencesof being over-indebted. The stats speak for them-selves:- with at least 60% of consumers that are over-indebted, how many people openly admit that theirfinancial circumstances have gotten out of control?There is a serious misconception, that to seek help issomehow a sign of failure. This is simply not true. When someone delays in getting help, this only makestheir situation much worse. Remember, the DebtReview process is temporary. During this process, aconsumer has the following benefits:* Their way of life preserved;
* Their car is safe from repossession; * Their Home is safe from auction; * Peace of mind.
Debt Review offers an immediate, life changing andpositive solution to a familyʼs financial crisis. Clientsare assured of confidential, personal and professionaladvice – without judgement.
