Sunday Lent ~ As we prepare to celebrate the Death and Resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ, we are

confronted with the call and necessity to experience our own death and resurrection interiorly. The gospel calls

us to complete transformation – the seed must go into the ground and die IF it is to produce much fruit. Even

the gospel for Cycle ‘A’ used for the Masses with the Elect (RCIA) this weekend focus on death and rising from

death in the story of Lazarus. Empty tombs seem to be the order of the day. Death will have no more power over us. With Paul

we can ask: “Oh death, where is your sting? Oh grave, where is your victory.” We are called to embrace the process of dying

within so that new life may emerge. This, of course, goes far beyond Good Friday and Easter Sunday. We are a Paschal People

who embrace this not on just a couple of days, but as a way of life. Further, we are to model it so that others may discover the

power of the cross, the death and the resurrection in their daily living. Liturgically and Spiritually as Church we come to these

holiest of days to find the fullness of life. Come to these sacred and powerful liturgies. Make use of the sacraments these days,

especially Reconciliation – Confession. Let healing, renewal, emptying of our inner tombs be the order of our day!

For the past three Sundays of Lent, St. Bernard 8th grade class has spoken at all of the Sunday Masses. They have invited us to give to the children of Malawi, Africa, in a special program called K.I.N.D. or Kids In Need of Desks. Malawi is

among the world’s least developed countries. Children sit in the dirt or on the floor in schools and do their best to learn. Through a generous and loving response of many people around the world, now including members of St. Bernard Church, children in Malawi are getting desks where two or three students can sit together. You have literally picked them up off the floor. That our children would respond to this challenge to help the children of Malawi and that they would commit to six weeks and be at all of the Weekend Masses is a testimony to what they are learning here in their Catholic Education. They have directly affected the lives and education of children on the other side of our world. They have put their faith into action!

RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults): The last Scrutiny is celebrated today. Holy Week, then, ushers in the most sacred celebrations of Initiation as our Elect are baptized, confirmed and receive Eucharist for the 1

st time at the Easter Vigil. After Easter,

the newly baptized/initiated have a blessed opportunity to rejoice in the gifts they have received as they celebrate the ‘50’ days until Pentecost. In this period called the Mystagogia they will reflect upon all that has happened to them, all that they have chosen and responded to, so that they can more fully live out their faith in Jesus Christ!

5° Domingo de Cuaresma ~ Mientras nos preparamos para celebrar la muerte y resurrección de nuestro

Señor, Jesucristo, nos enfrentamos al llamado y a la necesidad de experimentar nuestra propia muerte y

resurrección interior. El evangelio nos llama a una transformación completa - la semilla debe entrar en la

tierra y morir si es que va a producir mucho fruto. Incluso el evangelio del ciclo 'A' que se usa para las Misas

para los Elegidos de (RICA) se enfoca este fin de semana en la muerte y resurrección en la historia de Lázaro. Las tumbas

vacías parecen estar a la orden del día. La muerte no tendrá más poder sobre nosotros. Con Pablo nos podemos preguntar: "Oh muerte, ¿dónde está tu aguijón? Oh tumba, ¿dónde está tu victoria." Estamos llamados a abrazar el proceso de morir dentro de

nosotros mismos para dar paso a la vida nueva. Esto, por supuesto, va mucho más allá del Viernes Santo y del Domingo de

Pascua. Somos un Pueblo Pascual que abraza esto, no únicamente un par de días, sino como una forma de vida. Además,

hemos de modelarlo para que otros puedan descubrir el poder de la cruz, la muerte y la resurrección en su vida diaria. Litúrgica

y espiritualmente hemos llegado como Iglesia a éstos, los más sagrados de los días para encontrar la plenitud de la vida. Ven a

estas liturgias sagradas y poderosas. Haz uso de los sacramentos en estos días, especialmente el de la Reconciliación —

Confesión. Dejemos que la sanación, la renovación, y el despojo de nuestras tumbas interiores sea el fin de nuestros días!

Por los últimos tres domingos de Cuaresma, la clase del Octavo Grado de la Escuela de San Bernardo se ha dirigido a la comunidad parroquial. Nos han invitado a participr en el programa especial llamado

K.I.N.D. (Niños en Nececidad de Escritorios). Malawi está entre los países menos desarrollados del mundo donde los niños tienen que sentarse en la tierra o en el suelo en las escuelas y tratan en lo posible de aprender. Por medio de la generosidad de mucha gente a través del mundo, incluyentdo la Iglesia de San Bernardo, los niños de Malawi están recibiendo escritorios donde caben dos o tres estudiantes. Literalmente, usted los ha levantdo del suelo. El hecho de que nuestros niños respondan al reto de ayudar a los niños de Malawi, y que se hayan comprometido por seis semanas a estar presentes durante todas las Misas Dominicales es un testimonio de lo que están aprendiendo en su educación Católica. Han tocado directamente las vidas y educación de los niños al otro lado del mundo. Han pauesto su fe en acción!

RICA (Rito de Iniciación Cristiana de Adultos)

El último escrutinio se celebra hoy. Seguidamente, la Semana Santa anuncia las celebraciones más sagradas de Iniciación, cuando nuestros elegidos son bautizados, confirmados, y reciben la Eucaristía por

primera vez en la Vigilia Pascual. Después de Pascua, los recién bautizados, o iniciados tienen la oportunidad de regocijarse con los regalos que han recibido mientras celebran los '50' días hasta Pentecostés.¡En este período llamado Mystagogia reflexionarán sobre todo lo que les ha sucedido, todo lo que han elegido y respondido, para que puedan vivir más plenamente su fe en Jesucristo!
