“So We Are Ambassadors For Christ, As If God Were Appealing Through Us”

Being an ambassador is not an easy task. In a world torn by poverty, war and natural calamity, we find that ambassadors of nations are constantly on call to represent their respective countries throughout the world. One of the most dra-matic statements of disapproval to a host-country is to recall one’s ambassadors and close one’s embassy. At the same time, there is no more fortuitous event for a country than to be selected for diplomatic relations and the permanent resi-dence of an ambassador. “So we are ambassadors for Christ.” The imagery is obvious, no? It is as if God has established an “embassy” in the world. But, strange to say, we are the ambas-sadors God has chosen to send to the world; We are God’s flesh-and-blood ap-peal the world. And all this “through Christ, with Christ, and in Christ.” Ordinarily, an ambassa-dor’s powers are limited and purely discretionary in very restricted circumstances. Ambassadors normally do not speak on their own authority. They must stay in-constant communication with the one who sent them. And so it is with us and our call to be ambassadors for Christ. But, interestingly enough, St. Paul, in his 2nd Letter to the Corinthians, has a different take on how we and Christ are related. “As if God were appealing through us,” says Paul. We are not merely representatives of Jesus Christ. In a profound way, we are Christ present in the world of today. We are the living human appeal of God to the people of the world. Like Christ, we make God Incarnate, so that our interactions with people are, in some myste-rious but real way, the interactions of God with them. In the human political sphere, the ambassador “represents” policy or decisions taken by a country’s leadership or ruler. For those who live in Christ, through Christ, and with Christ, THEY ARE THE MESSAGE. Marshall MacCluhan’s adage that “the medium is the message” is pre-eminently true in the case of Christ’s ambassadors. I am a genuine appeal of God, in the way that Jesus Christ was God’s appeal to the world. It is an on-going, lived experience of being sent on a mission. It is not that Jesus had a mission and a message and my role is merely to tell people that. NO. I must discover my mission and message which God is giving to the world of 2007. GOD APPEALING THROUGH ME! How sad, if I were never to discover what the appeal is, which God is making through me. Father Bob Grib, S. J. - RCIA “He has been found!”

The Donald J. Ahearn Humanitarian Award

Congratulations to Dorothy Wegmann, this year’s recipient of the Donald J. Ahearn Humanitarian Award, which is given each year at the Irish Family Mass. Dorothy & her family have been parishioners for over 50 years. After her dear husband Tony died, Dorothy became a Bereavement Minister. She is the sacris-tan for funerals. She is a Minister of Care at Resurrection Medical Center every Friday and gives also gives communion to several homebound of our parish. No one is more deserving of this award than Dorothy. She truly is a Christian witness to our faith community.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT Jesus tells the story of the forgiving father. The father's younger son takes his inheritance, moves from the family farm into the city where he spends all his money on wild living. The young man ends up in a pitiable state, taking a job feeding pigs, desperately hungry, but not even allowed by his masters to eat any of the food that he feeds to their pigs. Coming to his senses, he returns home and begs his father's forgiveness. The father, who has never stopped loving his younger son, throws a party to celebrate. The father's older son is furious. After all, he has stayed at home and worked on the farm. "For years I have slaved for you," he complains. Although he has done the right thing, he resents it. The father's love for his older son is clear too. "Everything I have is yours," he says. "But your brother has been lost to us and is now found. So, of course, we have to celebrate." The father in Jesus' story, of course, is our generous Father in heaven, who loves us all, who is willing to forgive everyone who asks for his forgiveness. Living the Word: Pray: "Father, in this Lenten season of growing, help me to be generous with my forgiveness. Give me the humility to ask for your forgiveness and for the forgiveness of all those whom I have offended."

Taken from Catechist Magazine

During the Lenten Season… • Weekday Masses in Church at 7:00 am and 8:45 am • Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament from 7:30am - 8:30am on Fridays • Stations of the Cross following the 8:45am Mass on Fridays • Holy Hour on Monday evenings from 7:00pm until 8:00pm in the Chapel • The Chapel is always open for prayer and meditation during our regular par-

ish office hours

Handbells Do you miss handbells at Mass? The handbell choir is down to just three members and we are unable to play with so few ringers. It would be a shame if we can't play for the Easter season, but that is what will happen if a few of our parishioners don't step up and volunteer for this minis-try. It doesn't take much time, only about an hour and a half a week on Thursday evenings. You don't need any musical experience to play. The director will teach you all you need to know. If you don't want to see this beautiful addition to the Mass end, please call Michael Crisci @ 847.830.1513

Joyful Now ‘Forever in Our Hearts’

Monday, April 2nd From10:00 am – 1:00 pm

On Monday morning, April 2, from 10:00 am - 1:00 pm, our Joyful Now Ministry will be hosting ‘Forever in Our Hearts’, a time for conversation and reflection for any-one who has lost a spouse. Joyful Now feels this day to be timely as it is Monday of Holy Week, the week we walk with Jesus on his journey to Jerusalem. As our Joyful Now members have experienced their own ‘Good Friday’ the day they lost their spouse, the promise of Easter Sunday keeps them a hopeful and vibrant group. ‘Forever in Our Hearts’ is open to any one who has lost a spouse. As it is most helpful to know how many will be attending or if you have any questions, please call Joyce Browne at the parish business office 773.631.4127.

Holy Thursday Liturgy - April 8th - 7:00pm It is the custom in most parishes to have the "Washing of Feet" at the Holy Thursday Liturgy of the Lord's Sup-per. This rite is a powerful sign of our willingness to fol-low Christ's example of service, charity and humility. We would like to invite anyone who wishes to participate in this special rite to call Pam Francisco at 773.631.2239 to volunteer. It would entail coming forward during the Mass to have watered poured over your feet by one of the Priests and Deacons. Please call by March 26th so we, the Liturgy Team, can be adequately prepared for this special sign of service. Thank you for considering to be a part of the rite.

Thank You St. Juliana’s Men’s Club The Cub Scout Pack 3965 would like to thank the St. Juliana Men's Club for sponsoring the religious awards program this year. Through the pro-grams, the boys were able to better understand both the importance of a closer relationship with Jesus through prayer and of serving others within their community.

Parish Finance Council The St. Juliana Parish Finance Coun-cil has openings for new members. Our council meets monthly to pro-ject and plan the resources required to sustain and grow the mission, goals and ministries of our parish. In addi-tion to monitoring the budget and financial performance of church, school, catechesis and auxiliary pro-grams, the council directs the com-munication of financial activities to the parish. The council operates fol-lowing guidelines set forth by the Archdiocese of Chicago while it en-sures the parish operates in compli-ance with archdiocesan Best Practices for Parish Business Operations. Parishioners with demonstrable skills in business, management, finance, planning, law or communication are preferred. Experience in engineering, construction, maintenance, or pur-chasing is also helpful. Interested parties should answer the brief list of questions below and mail or email it to Fr. Steve Kanonik ([email protected]). 1) Date joined the parish. 2) Summarize your professional

background. 3) Why are you interested being a

Parish Council Commission Meeting February Minutes

The Parish Council holds three Commission meetings each year. The purpose of these meetings is to share information with each ministry, or organization, and provide an arena for the ministries to help each other and the parish. Each ministry belongs to one of five commissions: Parish Support, Parish Community, Worship & Spiritual Life, Religious Education & Formation and Human Concerns. This year’s second meeting was held on Monday, February 12th at 7:30 pm in the Par-ish Center. A representative from each of St. Juliana’s minis-tries was invited to attend this meeting. The meeting started with a short prayer service in the Chapel, this time led by Fr. Bob Grib. The attendees then broke up into the five commissions to which their ministry is assigned. Worship & Spiritual Life met in the chapel and saw represen-tatives from Choirs, Eucharistic Ministers, Family Liturgy & Liturgy Team, Lectors & Commentators and Monday Night Holy Hour. One of the topics of discussion was the new Par-ish Theme “Come, Walk Together the Way of Christ” and what it means to us, how can we take it back to our organiza-tions and how can we live it? The ministries were all very pleased with the theme and thought it was broad enough for each organization to have their own interpretation but still give the parish a common goal to be working toward. The Choir members noted that they were looking forward to up-coming events in church, such as the Irish Family Mass and the St. Joseph Table. They also typed up a list of suggestions with possible solutions for the Parish Council and Fr. Steve. Among their suggestions were issues regarding church light-ing, fixing windows, more functional choir risers and the church sound system. The Family Liturgy & Liturgy Team shared their Lenten theme for this year – “Stay with us, Lord” and stated that Lenten prayer books will be available. Monday Night Holy Hour is trying to promote increased ado-ration during Lent and will continue communication with the priests to involve them in encouraging the parish to partici-pate. Human Concerns met in the lounge and once again had a decent turn-out with representatives from Pro-Life, Recovery and the St. Vincent DePaul Society. The Human Concerns commission embraced the new theme and thought it was beautifully phrased. The ministries then shared any news about their organization. Pro-Life’s baby bottle collection was very successful, raising over $3,500 which went to a near-by Women’s Center. Also discussed was the issue of how pro-life is addressed in the parish, the CCD program and the school curriculum. The St. Vincent DePaul Society humbly recapped their works for the homeless and for those in nursing homes. Recovery discussed their mental health program which is based on good Christian principals and basic psychology. The Commission then discussed getting better information out

about their ministries using the bulletin. The workings of the St. Juliana Food Panty were also brought to the table. Meanwhile in the dining room, Parish Community and Parish Support combined meetings due to a smaller-than-expected turn-out. For Parish Support, representatives were present from the Athletic Association, Picnic Planning Committee and St. Joseph Table Committee. For Parish Community, representatives from Boy Scouts/Cub Scouts, Brownies/Girl Scouts and Mothers’ Club were present. A roundtable discus-sion was encouraged on the new Parish theme and how it can be incorporated into each group. St. Joseph’s Table discussed the busy schedule of trying to get volunteers and donations in a short amount of time. The possible use of high school age parishioners to help avoid this situation was brought up as a possible solution. Boy Scouts noted that three boys will be awarded the high honor of Eagle Scout. Another point of discussion was the need to use the bulletin as a way to com-municate more openly with the community. Council mem-bers explained that the upcoming re-organization of the bulle-tin will provide a greater opportunity for each group to share information with the parish and give updates particular to their organization. Among other items discussed were assist-ing other groups within the parish, a suggestion box in the back of church and open information regarding fundraising and the use of monies. Council members encouraged the organizations to incorporate solutions to these items into their long- and short-term goals, and to work on what other issues would fit into their goal planning. And over in the SPRED room, the Religious Education & Formation commission had representatives from CCD, Sun-day School, SPRED, School Board, RCIA and PREB. More out-reach programs for school children was a subject that was brought up last year during the Parish survey. It was pointed out that although there are many outreach opportunities for the school children, the type of out-reach that the parish is used to hearing about is curbed somewhat by child safety/parent concerns. A Teen Youth Group was then discussed, with suggestions from the commission on its viability and how we might retain membership (dwindling numbers have ended past attempts at youth groups). Bible Study for children dur-ing masses was another subject brought up for discussion. It was pointed out that St. Juliana already has a Sunday School which is during the 9:00 am Mass for ages 3-5, but it has low attendance. It was suggested that this opportunity be better related to the parishioners and perhaps we need to determine during which Mass is the best time to hold Sunday School. The discussion then moved on to goal setting, and the Coun-cil encouraged the ministries to think about long- and short-term goals for their organizations. Each meeting was adjourned around 9:00 pm. The final Commission meeting for the year will take place in May. Ex-act details will be made available soon.

Congratulations to the Girl Scouts in Troop 1566 for receiving the "I Live My Faith" Reli-gious Award. The girls participated in several activities to further un-derstand their faith and the church community of St. Juliana. Father Steve met with the scouts in the chapel for prayer, reconciliation, and an informative Q&A session regarding our faith. The girls also toured Holy Name Ca-thedral under the guid-ance of Deacon McCloskey. We're proud of our fifth grade Girl Scouts:
