To meet diversifying needs and changing market circumstances, the Company has been restructuring operations since its establishment to expand into non-clothing and non-textile fields. Seiren has developed new businesses by capitalizing on its extensive textile processing technologies. Operations currently span a broad range of segments, including automotive interiors, fashion apparel, electronics materials, housing and interior materials, and medical materials.In addition, the Company has developed the innovative Viscotecs® digital production system based on its advanced dyeing technologies combined with cutting-edge technologies from other industries, such as the machinery, electric power, electronics, and information sectors. Adoption of the Viscotecs® system allows for the seamless integration of product planning, development, and production without time lags regardless of distance among work sites. In addition to a full array of colors made possible by the availability of 16.77 million colors, Viscotecs’ enables on-demand customized small-lot production of a wide variety of products, short delivery times, and an inventory-free business model. In other words, the system allows the Company to offer products that precisely meet market needs.
当社は 1889 年に創業、1923 年に福井精練加工株式会社として設立しました。絹の精練業からはじまり、各種繊維製品の染色加工分野で日本一の規模に発展してまいりました。1973 年に社名をセーレン株式会社に変更、現在では「総合繊維メーカー」として天然繊維から合成繊維まで、そして糸から最終繊維製品までの企画〜製造〜販売の一貫機能を備え、生活者のニーズに即座に対応できる新しいビジネスモデルを構築し企業活動を行っています。

Fukui Seiren Kako Co., Ltd., Seiren’s predecessor, was founded in 1889 and incorporated in 1923. From its beginnings in silk scouring, the Company developed into a leader in the field of textile dyeing and finishing in Japan. The Company changed its name to Seiren Co., Ltd. in 1973, and Now we are involved in huge range of comprehensive activities, including planning, manufacturing and sales of natural and synthetic textiles from thread to finished textile garments. Indeed, Seiren boasts a new business model that allows us to swiftly fulfill consumers’ needs. We are diversifying the fields we work in to include not only fashions, but also non-apparel areas such as car seat upholstery, electro-magnetic interference shielding material, and cosmetics. We at Seiren are also expanding globally. Conditions in the automotive seat and airbag market were severe, especially related to the domestic car seat business, which was impacted by a huge ongoing decline in car sales, as well as rising production costs resulting from higher oil prices, and decrease in sales prices. Efforts were made to reduce production costs, by conserving energy, and streamlining our operations, and these countermeasures were effective to a limited degree. However, as Japanese auto manufacturers increased overseas production, Seiren reinforced production capacity in all overseas production sites thereby achieving a substantial increase in revenues and profits, effectively covering domestic losses and contributed to an increase in sales to ¥49.8 billion, 2.9% increase over the previous year.

独自のデジタルプロダクションシステム「Viscotecs®」を核に、高感性・高機能のテキスタイル製品を企画・製造・販売しています。カスタムオーダーメイド製品からオリジナルブランドの店舗展開など、お客様の多様なニーズに応え、全く新しい製造・流通のしくみを活用したファッション衣料・スポーツ衣料・水着などさまざまな製品を創出しています。またKB セーレン㈱ではポリエステル繊維・ナイロン繊維など合成繊維及び綿・絹など天然繊維製品を製造・販売しています。
売上面では、個人消費の低調に加え天候不順による販売不振、水着・インナー市場の低迷など厳しい市場環境となり、利益面においても、燃料、原染料などで大幅な価格アップが続き、かつ製・商品仕入価格も上昇するなど非常に苦しい環境でした。特に生産を担当しているコミッション部門では大幅な製造コストのアップにさらされ、当事業全体では売上高 374 億円（前期比 2.1％減）となり、減収・大幅減益となりました。こうした中、多品種・小ロット・短納期、在庫レス、高付加価値を得意とするビスコテックス商品やシームレス商品「プリモーディアル ®」は、国内はもちろん海外でも売上を伸ばし、今後のさらなる飛躍につなげることができました。

Seiren’s unique integrated group production system allows for fast development and highly efficient manufacturing of automotive interior materials. We are continuously developing high value-added products that satisfy market requirements in terms of both quality and price. Air bags represent just one of the products in this segment that incorporate materials developed, manufactured, and sewn by the Seiren group.
Due to sluggish consumer spending, unfavorable weather conditions, and stagnation in the swim-wear and undergarment markets, market conditions were severe and had a negative impact on sales. Continual price increases of fuel and dyestuff and chemical as well as rising costs for goods and products also had negative affects on profits. In particular, the commission sector in charge of production struggled with increases in manufacturing costs, and the company recorded a decline in revenues and profits, with sales at ¥37.4 billion (2.1% decrease over the previous year). However, the sales of Viscotecs’ products and Primordial® range of seamless garments, which have the strong points of product variety, small lot production, quick turnaround, minimum inventory, adding high value increased in both domestic and foreign markets.

Efforts were made to increase sales by introducing new product, Lamitect-thermo into the Lamitect® series of house wrapping materials, however due to revisions in the Building Standards Laws, housing construction made a steep decline. This combined with a large drop in the production of massage chair material, Seiren experienced a major decrease in revenues, with sales at ¥9.4 billion, and a 6.6% decrease over the previous year. However, Seiren Housing was able to record an overall increase in profits due to design work related to Seiren Group construction orders, and adjustments made to the unprofitable segments of KB Seiren’s bedding business.
In sericin related operations, the Comoace® series of beauty products including: Serisage®’ medicated skin whitening lotion, Kenreisui® antiaging and beautifying lotion, and Siltia ® hair-care products, provided a 20% increase over the previous year. Robust sales from base-materials related to artificial blood vessel production and increased hair volume formula, as well as expanded business related to KB Seiren’s base-cloth for flexible adhesive preparations, Espansione®’ special flexible non-woven textile cloth, and Bell Couple® base-material for water purifiers, led to overall sales of ¥3.9 billion (29.2% increase over the previous year) and substantial increases in revenue and profits.
Pertaining to our main product, the electromagnetic interference shielding material, Plat®, rising manufacturing costs, directly related to spiraling costs of fuel and rare metals, and sales price reductions combined with previous costs related to the launch of the FM Center (for film mesh production) created a very rough environment in relation to profits. However, large scale increases in PDP and full-capacity production of gasket materials provided a boost to sales. Furthermore, robust sales of Seiren Electronics’ products and KB Seiren’s electronics business contributed to ¥11.5 billion in sales, an increase of 2.5% over the previous year, an increase of revenue and modest increase in profit.

繊維の柔軟性･軽量性･多彩な形状適応性と、金属の導電性を融合させたコンポジット素材、電磁波シールド材「プラット®」は、主にEMI（Electro Magnetic Interference）、シールド（shield）対策部品として導電性ガスケットの被覆材、導電性テープの基材に使用されております。その用途はパソコンや携帯電話、さまざまなデジタル家電など多肢にわたります。また、KBセーレン㈱は半導体製造におけるクリーナーや光学レンズ用のワイピングクロスを製造･販売しています。
当事業の主力商品である電磁波シールド材「プラット®」の市場環境は、最終製品価格の下落に加え、原燃料や希少金属の高騰が製造コストを押し上げ、また FM センター (フィルムメッシュ工場 ) の立ち上げ費用も先行し、利益面では非常に厳しい環境が続きました。しかし売上面では、PDP において大幅増注、ガスケット材のフル生産などで、順調に伸ばすことができました。加えてセーレン電子㈱の電子機器販売や KB セーレン㈱のエレクトロニクス事業なども好調だったことなどが貢献して、事業全体では売上高 115 億円（前期比 2.5％増）で、増収・微増益となりました。
ハウスラップ材「ラミテクト®」シリーズに新商品「ラミテクトサーモ」を投入し、拡販に努めてきましたが、建築基準法改正による影響などで住宅着工件数が大幅にダウン、さらにマッサージチェア基布もさらなる減産になったことなどで、売上高は 94 億円（前期比 6.6％減）で、大きく減収となりました。一方利益面では、セーレンハウジング㈱においてセーレングループでの建設発注に関わる設計業務が旺盛だったことや KB セーレン㈱の寝装事業の不採算部分の整理を行ったことなどが寄与して、全体では増益となりました。

The Company’s PLAT® electromagnetic interference shielding material is a composite material combining the characteristics of textiles, such as flexibility, lightness, and shape adaptability, with the electrical conductivity properties usually associated with metal. It is primarily used as a basic material for conductive-coated gaskets and conductive adhesive tape. Applications therefore extend to a multitude of digital home electronics products, including personal computers and mobile phones. Additionally, KB Seiren manufactures and sells cleaners for use in the semiconductor production process and wiping cloths for optical lenses.
長年にわたって培ってきた繊維加工技術を活かしたハウスラップ材など建材やオフィス家具やインテリア資材、介護関連資材、広告幕（バナー）など、マーケットニーズに即応したハウジング・インテリア資材を企画・製造・販売しています。
繭から生まれた天然たんぱく質「セリシン」を独自技術により高純度精製した「ピュアセリシン」の保湿性・美白効果・抗酸化機能・細胞活性化機能を活かし、肌にやさしい化粧品「コモエース ®」や快適素材「フレシール ®」などを製造・販売しています。さらに「ピュアセリシン」の医療分野への新規用途開発などを進めています。また、KB セーレン㈱は伸縮性貼付剤など医療用繊維製品を製造・販売しています。
セリシン事業において、化粧品事業「コモエース ®」シリーズで、薬用美白スキンケア「セリサージュ®」、美肌老化防止「絹麗粋 ®」、ヘアケア「シルティア®」などで、前期比約 20％売上を伸ばしました。また、人工血管基材、ヘアーボリュームアップ剤の売上が加わったことや、KB セーレン㈱の伸縮性貼付剤基布、絆創膏用伸縮基材「エスパンシオーネ®」、浄水器フィルター基材 ｢ ベルカップル ®｣ なども順調に拡大したことで、事業全体では、売上高 39 億円（前期比 29.2％増）となり、大幅増収・大幅増益を達成することができました。
Applying the textile processing technologies accumulated over many long years, Seiren develops, manufactures, and sells housing and interior materials for various uses. Products include house wrapping and other construction materials, office furniture, as well as other interior items, nursing care related materials and advertisement banners.
We at Seiren use our in-house advanced technologies to refine sericin, a natural protein extracted from silkworm cocoons, into high purity sericin that is noted for such properties as moisture retention, whitening effect, anti-oxidation, and cell rejuvenation. This Pure Sericin is used as an active ingredient in the Comoace® brand cosmetics, ideal for sensitive skins, and FRAICHIR® comfort-emphasizing textile products manufactured and sold by Seiren. We continue to work hard to develop new applications for Pure Sericin in the medical field. Meanwhile, KB Seiren manufactures and sells flexible adhesive preparations and other fabric products for medical use.

当社および当社グループは、グループトータルの企業価値を最大にするための連結経営を基本としております。その目標とする連結経営指標は、①売上高営業利益率（連結）10％以上 （2008年3月期実績：5.9％）②連結ROE（自己資本当期純利益率）10％以上 （2008年3月期実績：9.4％）

At Seiren and Seiren Group, consolidated business is a fundamental element in maximizing group total corporate value. The consolidated business indicator we aim to achieve is:

The 120th anniversary

2008 is the 120th anniversary of Seiren, and since business was founded on silk-scouring in 1889, Seiren has played a leading role in technological innovations in the field of dyeing and finishing work for various textile products. The company has since grown as a comprehensive textile producer with an integrated system that includes planning, manufacturing and sales. Over the years, we have experienced and survived many hardships, such as the Great Depression and post-war rebuilding in the beginning of the Showa period, the Fukui Earthquake and the Oil Crisis, and we are very grateful to be here to celebrate our 120th year.
In 2005, the Seiren Group acquired Kanebo’s textile department and developed a unique, integrated business model which spans from thread to production and sales of finished garments, then expanded into the field of non-apparel and non-textile operations. As the world enters a transitional period, the company environment must keep pace with the speed and scale of this change. During this time, we must remain focused on, “What shouldn’t be changed and what should be changed”. As we maintain the valuable foundations of Seiren’s textile technology, we will continue to expand our non-textile business, and diversify into, “21st century fields” which include nanotechnology, medical, the environment and the space industry. We aim for sales of ¥300 billion in 10 years as we continue with business reformation.
Custom order-based business is one of the company’s business strategies and the ultimate goal of our “IT and direct distribution” strategy. Custom order-based business will make use of Seiren’s dyeing and finishing technology which is an integration of IT, production and quality control technologies that have been developed over the years, and will provide 100% customer satisfaction. Moreover, in the past, many textile products were made without a guarantee of being sold, and energy and other resources were wasted. Custom order-based business will eliminate waste and be far less harmful to the environment. “VISCONAVI®”, a custom order-based system currently under development, will enable customers to make selections from an extensive virtual stock, and try on garments virtually, using a full-sized computer screen. This is how our, “New business model” will become a reality. The sales-method which best meets the needs of the IT generation is to offer custom products and manufacture only the amount sold. Realization of this project will take at least two years. Twenty years of research and development have led Seiren to the ultimate realization of the custom order-based system. Not only will it be a reformation of the company, but will revolutionize distribution and the industry in general.

2008年、セーレンは創業120周年を迎えました。1889年の創業以来、絹の精練からはじまり、各種繊維製品の染色加工分野では常に技術革新の中心的役割を果たし、現在では企画・製造・販売の一貫システムをもった総合繊維メーカーとして成長してきました。
この間、昭和初期の世界大恐慌や戦災、福井大地震、オイルショックなど幾多の難局に遭遇しましたが、なんとかこれらを乗り越え、おかげさまで創業120周年を迎えることができました。
セーレングループは、 2005年に旧カネボウの繊維部門を買収し、原糸から最終製品の製造販売までの、世界に類のない一貫体制のビジネスモデルを完成し、非衣料・非繊維への事業分野に転換拡大を進めてきました。
しかしながら、企業を取り巻く環境は、今や世界大転換期を迎え、その変化のスピード、大きさに一瞬の停滞も許されない状況にあります。この大きな変革期に、「不易流行=変えてはならないこと、また思い切って変えなければならないこと」をしっかりと実践し、これまで培ってきた繊維の技術基盤を大切にしながら、一方では脱繊維を図り、ナノテクノロジー、医療分野、環境分野、宇宙産業など21世紀を切り開く未知への世界に挑戦し続け、さらなる企業改革を進め、10年後の売上高3,000億円の達成を目指した経営を行いたいと考えています。

120周年記念事業の第1弾として、2006年3月に研究開発センターを竣工しました。それまで各事業所に分散していた技術開発、商品開発機能を集約し、新規研究開発の効率化を図ると共に、当社の未来を担うNew Value Creation（創造）を行っています。With the establishment of the Technical Center in March 2006, the first stage of 120th anniversary operations have been finalized. Technical and product development operations were previously dispersed into separate facilities, however by bringing
these divisions together, efficiency will increase and the company will be better able to focus on furthering research and development, future business and, “New Value Creation”.
さらなる飛躍を具現化する 3 工場が稼動A Great Leap Forward as Three Factories Come Online
セーレンの先端技術の集積地である生活科学総合ステーション内に、次世代電磁波シールド材の生産拠点「FMセンター」、合成皮革・人工皮革・本革の生産開発拠点「LNセンター」、次世代ビスコテックスの生産開発拠点「SVセンター」が竣工しました。これは、120周年の節目に「新しいセーレンを創る」ための投資であり、この投資を成功させることによって、「さらなる飛躍、新たな夢への挑戦」を具現化したいと考えます。Construction was completed on the FM Center, production base for next-generation electromagnetic interference shielding materials; the LN Center, production and development base for synthetic and genuine leather; and the SV Center, production and development base for next-generation Viscotecs, as part of the General Life Science Station ― the hub of Seiren’s cutting edge technology. These centers are an investment towards the creation of a new Seiren in its 120th year, and the realization of, “New dreams and further progress”.
新本社ビルを建設しましたCompletion of the New Headquarters Building
2008年3月には、120周年記念事業の一環として、新本社ビルが竣工しました。この大きな節目に、繊維の一大産地である「福井」で、しっかりと仕事をし、ますます発展させて、このビルが福井のランドマークと呼ばれるような存在にしていきたいと思っています。
また、セーレンを象徴する新本社ビルを新たな事業規模拡大に伴うシンボルとし、「福井から世界へ、やがて宇宙へ」情報を発信していきたいと思います。
なお、旧本社ビル（左写真）は経済産業省により、『羽二重から人絹へ』新たなニーズに挑み続けた福井県の織物工業の歩みを物語る存在として、「近代化産業遺産」に認定されました。As part of 120th anniversary operations, the new Fukui headquarters building was established in January 2008, which also creates an important turning point for Seiren. As we work diligently to develop our business in the major textile production area of Fukui, we also hope this building will become a landmark of Fukui. The new headquarters building is a symbol for expansion of the scale of operations, and will serve as a information center from, “Fukui to the world, and beyond.” The former headquarters building (left photo) has been designated as a part of the, “Heritage of Industrial Modernization” by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. It will serve as a reminder of the history of Fukui Prefecture's textile industry, during which Seiren made continual efforts to meet the needs of the change from, “Silk to rayon”.

業績概要 Analysis of Results
当連結会計年度におけるわが国経済は、第 3 四半期までは、グローバル企業を中心とする輸出関連産業が先導する形でほぼ順調に拡大傾向を続けてきました。しかし、第 4 四半期に入ると様相が一変し、米国景気の先行き不安が、原油などの資源価格の暴騰や急激な円高・ドル安、大幅な株安の連鎖反応を引き起こし、また国内政治の機能不全も加わって、2002 年以降回復基調にあった景気は、急激に失速するという局面に陥りました。
当社グループにおきましても、第 3 四半期まではほぼ順調に増収・増益を続けてきましたが、第 4 四半期に入ってこれら一連の影響を受け、非常に厳しい企業環境となりました。具体的には、原染料・燃料など製造コストの大幅アップ、円高による為替差損の拡大、国内個人消費の伸び悩みによる売上ダウンなどが、当社企業業績に大きな影響を与えました。

This fiscal year, the Japanese economy, led by export-oriented industries centered on global business, continued to expand favorably until the third quarter. However, in the 4th quarter, concerns regarding the US economic trends triggered a sharp rise in prices of such resources as crude oil, as well as an appreciation of the yen and a depreciation of the dollar, which in turn caused share prices to plummet. This combined with dysfunctional domestic politics brought the positive momentum we had experienced since 2002 to a sudden halt. The Seiren Group had achieved almost continual increases in revenue and profits until the 3rd quarter, but the business environment during the 4th quarter was quite severe. Performance was influenced by the above events as well as several other factors including, large increases in production costs for raw dye-materials and fuel, foreign exchange loss caused by a strong yen, and a drop in sales due to sluggish domestic consumer spending.
As a result, the Seiren Group has made a concentrated effort to throughly reduce production costs, through energy conservation, etc., and has adopted a more proactive and aggressive stance related to work and the

ルギー対策をはじめとする徹底した原価低減活動はもちろん、 “攻めの経営、攻めの仕事”をキーワードに 5 つの事業分野において、経営の基本戦略である「IT 化・流通ダイレクト化」「非衣料・非繊維化」「グローバル化」を推進し、さらに、五ゲン主義（原理・原則・現場・現物・現実）活動を基本とした「企業体質の変革」を強力に推し進めてきました。「IT 化・流通ダイレクト化」では、企画・製造・販売の一貫体
制とデジタルプロダクションシステム「Viscotecs®」とを駆使し、多品種・小ロット・短納期・在庫レスを武器にお客様のニーズにお応えすることによって、売上拡大を達成することができました。「非衣料・非繊維化」では、国内自動車販売台数の減少や住宅関連産業の低迷などありましたが、電磁波シールド材などエレクトロニクス事業が好調だったこと、人工血管、セリシンなどメディカル事業が伸びたこと、KB セーレン㈱における工業
資材化を推し進めてきた成果が現れ始めたことなどにより、非衣料・非繊維全体ではほぼ堅調に推移しました。「グローバル化」では、世界 4 拠点での生産能力を積極的に増強した結果、海外子会社全体で売上高・営業利益とも過去最高を更新し、国内業績の落ち込みをカバーし、連結業績への大きな貢献をしました。
以上により、連結業績全体では、売上高・営業利益で前期比増収・増益を達成することができましたが、経常利益、当期純利益では、予想を上回る円高による為替差損が大きく発生し、減益を余儀なくされました。なお、当期は「さらなる飛躍、新たな夢への挑戦」への具現化として積極的に設備投資を行った結果、減価償却費につきましては全体で前期比 29.7％増となりました。

Promotion of IT and direct distribution involved making effective use of the integrated system of planning, manufacturing and sales, as well as Viscotecs® digital production system, which enabled Serien to meet customers’ needs and expand sales through product variety, small lot production, quick turnaround, and minimum inventory.
Despite decreases in domestic car sales, and sluggish housing related industries, the company’s non-apparel and non-textile businesses remained healthy due to strong electronics operations, such as in electromagnetic interference shielding material; expanded medical operations, such as artificial blood vessel and sericin production; and positive results achieved
from the promotion of KB Seiren’s industrial materials.
In terms of globalization, by proactively reinforcing the manufacturing capacity of four global locations, all foreign subsidiaries achieved record high sales and operating profits, whicheffectively covered domestic losses and contributed to consolidated performance.
Regarding consolidated performance as mentioned above, increases in revenue and profits were achieved in sales and operating income compared to the previous quarter. However, foreign exchange loss caused by a strong yen were greater than forecast, causing a decline in profits in ordinary income and net income. Furthermore, in order to realize Seiren’s, “New dreams and further progress” the company made capital investments this term, which brought about a 29.7% overall increase in depreciation expense compared to the previous quarter.
