Connection and conditions for use:You can connect your phone to a direct exchange line (DEL) on a localexchange with its own phone number; to an extension socket connected to a DEL; or to an extension on an approved compatible PBX. Do not connect as an extension to a pay phone.The ringer equivalence numbers (REN) of all equipment (phones, fax machines,modems, etc.) connected to an exchange line must not add up to more than 4, otherwise one or more of them may not ring and/or answer calls correctly. Thephone has a REN of 1, and most other telephones have a REN of 1 unlessmarked otherwise.

Handset - Base Connection1) When purchased, all handsets are already registered to the base unit and should link to it when they are all powered up.2) To use your cordless handset and base unit together, you must be able to

establish a radio link between them. The signal between the handset and the base is in accordance with the normal standards for a DECT phone: Maximum range upto 300 metres outdoors or 50 metres indoors. Be aware that:> Any large metal object, such as a refrigerator, mirror or filing cabinet, between the handset and the base unit may block the radio signal.> Other solid structures, like walls, may reduce the signal strength.> Other electrical equipment may cause interference and/or affect the range.

3) Do not place close to another telephone, a TV or audio equipment - it may cause interference.4) Out of Range warning. If you hear a warning tone during a call, and/or the sound in the earpiece becomes faint or distorted, you may be going out of range of the base unit, so move nearer to the base unit within 20 seconds, otherwise the call may be cut off.

2 INSTALLING YOUR PHONE2.1 Connecting the base station1) Plug the power supply and line cord into the base station.2) Plug the power adapter into a 230Vac, 50Hz mains socket, and the line cord into your telephone line socket.3) Always use the cables provided in the box Warning: Use only the provided adaptor, using other power supplies may cause a hazard.Warning: Install the base unit in a position where the mains adapter plug will reach an easily accessible mains socket. Never try to lengthen the mains power cable.NOTE: The base unit needs mains power for normal operation, not just for charging the handset batteries.2.2 Installing and charging the batteries1) Place the 2 supplied batteries into the battery compartment with the polarity markings as shown. Use only the NiMH rechargeable battery type provided.2) Position the battery compartment cover over the batteries and slide up to click into place.3) Put the handset on the base and charge for 15 hours before using the handset for the first time. The handset will give a beep when it is properly placed on the base or charger.If you have a Broadband lineIf you connect your telephone to a line witha broadband connection, you will need toinsert a micro-filter between the telephoneand the telephone line, otherwise you may getinterference between the telephone and the broadband, which could cause problems.In a home with broadband, every telephone must have a micro-filter connected, not just the one at the telephone point that your modem is connected to.If you need more broadband micro-filters, contact your broadband supplier.

3 GETTING TO KNOW YOUR PHONE3.1 Handset overview

3.2 Display icons and symbolsThe LCD display gives you information on the current status of the telephone.

Icon Meaning Displays when the telephone base is within

reception range. Off when the telephone base is out of range. Scrolls to indicate battery charging when handset

is in the telephone base or charger. Battery icon is full and steadily ON to indicate the

battery is fully charged. Flashes and empty when battery level is low. Speakerphone is in use.

Flashes when there are new calls in the call log.

Flashes when there is a new voice mail message. (This is a Caller Display service and is not usually

available from UK network providers.)

Displays when the alarm is set. Flashes when the alarm time is reached. Displays when energy saving mode is activated.

Displays when the handset ringer is turned off.

Displays when the answering system is on. Flashes when there are new messages.

3.3 Base station with telephone answering machine (TAM) controlYou can use the keys on the base station to perform the basic functions of the answering machine.

MESSAGE WINDOWThis window contains a 2-digit indicator which shows the number of messages and TAM status, as shown below.

PLAY/STOPPress to play or stop message playback.

ANSWER ON/OFFPress to turn the answering machine on/off. When the answering machine is on, the base display shows the status. When the answering machine is off,base display turns off.

VOLUME DOWNPress to decrease the volume, as above.

VOLUME UPPress to increase the volume, with separate settings for call screening (L0-5), playback (L1-5) and base ringer (L0-5).Note: If L0 is selected the speaker will be off in that mode.

DO NOT DISTURBPress and hold for 5 seconds to turn on the global do not disturb (DND) feature. When global DND is activated, all system handsets and the telephone base will be silent when there is an incoming call. When the DND is on, a small light will turn on at the top of the base display. Press to turn off the global do not disturb(DND) feature. W hen the DND is off, the small light will turn off.

SKIPDuring playback, press to skip to the next message.

REPEATDuring playback, press twice to go back to the previous message or press once to replay the current message.

DELETEDuring playback, press to delete the current message.In idle mode, press and hold to delete all old messages.

PAGEPress to ring and locate handsets.

4 USING YOUR PHONE4.1 Make a call4.1.1 Pre-dialling Enter the phone number (maximum 20 digits) and then press <TALK> to connect to the line and dial the number. 4.3 Handset SpeakerphoneDuring a call, you can press <TALK> to alternate between hands-free speakerphone and normal handset use.4.4 Adjust the volumeThere are 5 levels to choose from for each of the earpiece and speaker volumes.During a call, press <UP/DOWN> to select from vOLUME 1 to vOLUME 5. The current setting is shown, and when you end the call, the setting will remain at the last selected level.4.5 Mute/Unmute the microphoneWhen the microphone is muted, the handset displays MUTE ON, and your caller cannot hear you.During a call, press <MENU/OK>/MUTE> to turn on/off the microphone.4.6 PagingThe paging feature enables you to locate a missing handset if the handset is in range and contains charged batteries.Press <PAGE/FIND> on the base station. All the registered handsets that are in range will produce the paging tone and show PAGING on the display for 60 seconds.You can stop the paging by pressing any key on any handset or <PAGE/FIND> on the base again. 4.7 Switching on/offIf the handset is turned off, press and hold the <OFF> button for more than 5 seconds to switch it on. The display will show SEARCHING for a short time until the handset finds the base.To turn the handset off, press and hold the <OFF> button for more than 5 seconds in idle mode, until the display goes blank.** You can switch the handset off and save battery charge, if the handset is not on the base or a charger pod and you do not want to use it for a while.NOTE: When the handset is OFF, it cannot be used for making calls including emergency calls. There will be no ringing during an incoming call. To answer a call, you will need to switch it back on and it may take some time for the handset to re-establish a radio link with the base unit.

4.8 To lock/unlock the keypadYou can lock the keypad so that it cannot be used accidentally while carrying it around.In idle mode, press and hold the <STAR/*> key for 1 second to lock the keypad and show KEYS LOCKED on the display.To turn the keypad lock off, press and hold <STAR/*> again.NOTE: Incoming calls can still be answered even if the keypad is locked.4.9 Using the redial listThe redial list stores the last 10 numbers dialled, up to a maximum of 20 digits.4.9.1 Access the redial listPress <REDIAL> in idle mode and then press <UP/DOWN> to browse the redial list. 4.10 Make an internal call (Multi - handset versions only)The system allows an intercom call between two handsets registered to the same telephone base.4.11 To initiate an intercom call1. In idle mode, press <DEL/INT>. If your telephone system has only two handsets registered, the other handset will be called immediately. If your telephone system has more than two handsets registered, press <UP/DOWN> to find the handset you want to call, and then press <MENU/OK>.2. Press <TALK> to answer the intercom call on the other handset.3. 4.13 To initiate an intercom during a callYou can intercom with another system handset during a call, or invite another system handset to join in a conference call with you and the external caller.1. Press <DEL/INT> during an external call. If your telephone system has only two handsets registered, the other handset will be called immediately. If your telephone system has more than two handsets registered, press <UP/DOWN> to find the handset you want to call, and then press <MENU/OK> to call the other handset. The external call is placed on hold while the intercom is established with the other handset.2. Press <TALK> to answer the intercom on the other handset. NOTE: The intercom call can be cancelled before it is answered by pressing <DEL/INT> on the originating handset and returning to the external call.3. 5 PRIvATE PHONEBOOKYour phone can store up to 100 phonebook entries, which can be saved and viewed by any handset registered to the base, although only one handset can access it at a time. Each phonebook entry can have a maximum of 20 digits for the phone number and 14 characters for the name..See section 3.5 for how to enter text for the names.5.1 Store a contact in the phonebook1. Press <PHONEBOOK> to open the phonebook list, with the first entry shown, or ADD NEW if the phonebook is empty. (NOTE: you can also open the phonebook from the home screen, by pressing <MENU/OK> and <UP/DOWN> to select PHONEBOOK, then <MENU/OK> again.)2. 6 CALLER DISPLAY (NETWORK DEPENDENT)This feature is available if you have subscribed to the Calling Line Identification service with your network service provider. Caller ID lets you see the phone numbers of your callers on the handset display, before you answer and in your Call Log afterwards. The Call Log stores the last 40 different calling numbers, whether or not you answered the call, so you can call them back later.Only the most recent call is saved if there are repeat calls from the same number. When the Call Log is full, the next new call will replace the oldest entry.If you’ve got a new call in the Call Log, the Caller Display icon will flash on the handset display and it will show “XX NEW CALLS” to indicate the number of new calls received.If the received number is the same as one in your phonebook, the name from the phonebook will display as well as the number, when the call is received and in the Call Log.6.1 Access the Call LogPress <CALLS / UP> in idle mode and press <UP/DOWN> to step through the call list. 7.6.1 Global DNDWhen global DND is activated, all system handsets and the telephone base will be silent when there is an incoming call. Press and hold the < > button on the telephone base for 5 seconds to turn this feature on. The handsets will show DO NOT DISTURB on their display, and a small light will turn on just below the < > button on the base. Press the < > button on the telephone base to turn this feature off.7.6.2 Handset DNDYou can program an individual handset to be silent during predetermined time frames. This setting is independent to each handset and only silences the ringer of the handset programmed.To program the DND time for an individual handset1. Press <MENU/OK>.2. Press <UP/DOWN> to select PROGRAM DND and then press <MENU/OK>.3. Press <UP/DOWN> to select from: ONE TIME: The handset enters the DND mode once during the set time. DAILY: The handset enters the DND mode daily during the set time. OFF: Turn DND off.4. Press <MENU/OK> to select the option.5. If ONE TIME or DAILY is selected, enter the desired start time, in the format set, using the digit keys and <UP/DOWN> to change between AM or PM if required. and then press <MENU/OK>.6. Enter the desired stop time, as above, and then press <MENU/OK> to confirm the setting.NOTE: There is no indication that a DND time has been set, until the handset enters the DND period, when DO NOT DISTURB is shown on its display.NOTE: When global DND is turned on, an individual handset will continue to be in DND mode even after the set DND time on the handset ends.7.7 Call Barring settingThe call barring feature can be set on any handset to prevent it from dialling any phone number beginning with certain digits that have been set. Three different barring numbers, each of up to 4 digits, can be set. If a restricted number is dialled, the call will not be connected, an error tone is emitted and the handset returns to the stand-by state. The system PIN is required to set or modify the call barring state, and should be changed from 0000 to prevent the call bar setting being easily overcome.

7.9 Set the recall timeYou may need the R button to send a Recall signal (also called Flash orTimed Break Recall) for network services or if you are connected to a PBX. You should normally leave the Recall Time at its default setting of Short (100ms), as this is the standard recall required in the UK telephone network, but it can be changed to Medium (250ms) or Long (600ms) if your telephone is connected to a PBX that requires a different recall time.1. 8 ANSWERING MACHINEYour phone includes a telephone answering machine that records unanswered calls when it is on. The answering machine can store up to 59 messages within the maximum recording time of approximately 30 minutes and each message can be up to 3 minutes long. As well as recording incoming messages, you can record memos for other users of your phone.When the answering machine is turned ON, calls are answered after the set RING DELAY and the caller can then leave you a message if ANSWER & REC is selected, or hear an outgoing announcement if ANSWER ONLY is selected, but not be able to leave you a message.When the answering machine is turned OFF, calls are answered after 10 rings and the ANSWER ONLY message is played to the caller and they will not be able to leave a message.If the answering machine memory is full, MEMORY FULL! displays on the Handset and F flashes on the base, and you will have to delete some messages before any new ones can be recorded.Some answering machine functions can be operated from the base, including playing messages and turning the answering machine on or off, but more functions can be controlled and set up using the handset menu functions.8.1 Turning on/off the answering machine8.1.1 Using the telephone basePress <ANSWER ON/OFF> on the telephone base to turn the answering system on or off.The Ans on/off button will light when the answering system is on.8.1.2 Using a cordless handset1. 9 TROUBLESHOOTINGALWAYS check first that: You have followed all the steps listed in the user manual to install and

set up your telephone. All connectors are firmly inserted in their sockets. Mains power to the base unit is switched on at the socket. The handset’s batteries are correctly and securely installed and are not

run down.Everyday use“I cannot make or answer calls” If the handset’s display is blank, it may have been switched off. Press

and hold the <OFF> key to switch it back on. Check that the base unit’s mains power adapter is plugged in and power

is switched on. The base unit needs mains power for normal operation of the phone – not just for charging the batteries.

Make sure you are using the telephone line cable supplied with your phone. Other telephone line cables might not work.

Move the handset closer to the base unit. Check the battery level symbol on the display. If it is low, replace the

handset on the base unit or charger pod to recharge the batteries. Switch off power at the mains socket, wait for a short time and then

switch back on. This may solve the problem.“I cannot make a call” If the handset display shows KEYS LOCKED, press and hold the < * >

button to unlock it before you make a call. Only one handset (or the base unit) can be connected to the outside line

at a time. If the handset display shows LINE IN USE the base is already being used by either the answering machine or another handset.

If another handset is already using the line, you need to wait until it has finished its call.

“When I press on the keys, nothing happens” Make sure the batteries are fitted in your handset. If the Battery Level

symbol on the display shows ‘low’, put your handset back on the cradle to charge.

“When I key in a number, it appears on the display, but I cannot make an outside call” Try a different position for the base unit – somewhere higher if possible,

or further from other electrical equipment.“The phone does not ring” Check that the base unit’s mains power adapter is plugged in and power

is switched on. The base unit needs mains power for normal operation of the phone –

not just for charging the batteries. Make sure you are using the telephone line cable that was supplied with

your phone. Make sure that the ringer volume settings are not set to off. Increase the

ringer volume settings.“My call was cut off when I went out of range. Now I can’t use my handset.” Move the handset closer to the base unit before you try again to make a

call.“There is interference and noise on the line” Move the handset closer to the base unit, or to a different position. Try moving the base unit so that it’s not near other electrical equipment,

such as a television or a computer. You’ll get the best sound if you place the base unit as high as possible.

For example, in a two-floor building, the first-floor landing is an ideal place.

“I hear ‘beeps’ from my handset while I’m on a call” You may be going out of range of the base unit. Move closer or your call may be cut off. Check the Battery Level symbol on the display. If it’s low, recharge the batteries.“The Caller Display feature isn’t working” You need to subscribe to the Caller Display feature from your network

service provider. You should find contact details on your phone bill. The caller may have withheld their number by dialling 141. Or they may

be calling from a network that does not transmit the caller’s number (e.g. if they are making international calls.)

“When I try to make a call, I hear busy tone” If you’re using a multi-handset system, check whether another handset

is already on a call.“The volume in the earpiece is low when I’m on a call” Make sure you’re holding the earpiece correctly over your ear. Adjust the volume using the UP/DOWN key.Intercom and transfer“I can’t transfer a call” Make sure the other handset is in range of the base unit. Make sure you are dialling the correct number for the other handset.Batteries“The handset’s battery cells are running low within an hour or two” Before you first use the handset, you should have left it on the base unit

or charger pod for 15 hours to charge the batteries fully. You may need to replace the batteries. Check the connection between the base unit and the mains power

socket.“I try to recharge the batteries but I still get a warning that they are low” You need to replace the batteries. Dispose of used batteries safely – never burn them, or put them where

they could get punctured. Do not use non-rechargeable batteries in your handset – they may

explode, causing damage.If the fault persists... Disconnect all other instruments connected to the same line and try to

make a call. Disconnect the base unit from the telephone line and plug a different

phone into the master telephone socket. Try making a call. If this works, the line is OK.

If the call does not work, and you are using a two-way socket adapter, remove it and plug a telephone directly into the socket.

If the call now works, the adapter may be faulty. If you cannot make a call, the fault may be on the exchange line.

Contact the service provider.
