Phonics in Year 2
Committed to achievement for all
What is Phonics?
Phonics teaches children to read quickly and skillfully.
Children are taught how to read by segmenting and
blending letter sounds (phonemes)
Children can then use this knowledge to ‘de-code’
new words that they hear or see.

Why teach phonics?
Phonics teaching provides a reading foundation for every child that is based on the letters and sounds of the alphabet. Children are taught the 26 letters with their 44 sounds and 70 common spellings, so that they are equipped to read new words.

Year 2 Phonics
In Year 2, the children continue to refine their reading and spelling skills by building on the phonemes, graphemes and trigraphs they already know.
A phoneme is the smallest unit of sound in speech- for example, a in mat
A grapheme is a letter or a number of letters that represent a sound – for example, ai in wait
A trigraph is a single sound that is represented by three letters- for example, igh in high

Year 2 Phonics
Children are taught that different spellings of phonemes can make the same sound, for example, air in lair, ayor in mayor, ar in care, eain bear.
A new target phoneme is introduced each week, and spelling tests include words covered during the course of the week.

The phonics screening checkAll Year 2 children who did not meet the required standard in Year 1 will resit this check in June. The check ensures that all children are able to read by the end of Year 2.
Children are given a list of 40 words to read aloud to their teacher.
The list includes real words and non-words.
The non words are made up (alien words) to assess the child’s ability to to decode and read the word.
The check is age appropriate and lasts about ten minutes.
