Phonics Pathways Boosters is a selection of lively teaching aids and games that were written to enhance the phonics and early read-ing instruction in the best-selling Phonics Pathways, but are used very effectively with any other teaching program. These powerful teaching tools will jump-start reading for everyone, and include:

88 Sound-Spelling Flash Cards: This set of 46 double-sided flash cards illustrates all the sounds and spelling patterns of the English language. Illustrations on every card ensure correct pronuncia-tion. Learn with the picture side, flip to the letter-only side when ready. These cards are unique in that they illustrate sounds, not spellings, and include all possible spelling variations of every sound.

88 Blendit!: (similar to Bingo) These two board games teach begin-ning reading by developing and strengthening eye tracking, an essential skill needed by all readers:

(1) Two letters are blended to make a syllable.

(2) Syllables and letters are blended to make a word.

Cards are drawn, read, and placed over matching squares on the board. Whoever fills in a line first is the winner. Everyone loves this game—kids have just as much chance of winning as adults!

88 WordWorks: These three card games further develop reading fluency with increasingly complex levels of reading practice.

Eye span gradually expands, and eye tracking is strengthened:

(1) Two short-vowel words are read to make a phrase.

(2) Two long-vowel words are read to make a phrase.

(3) Complex multisyllable words are read easily and effortlessly with a special teaching technique.

Each set of cards can be played using any of the following games:

(1) Bag the Bugs (outrageous!)

(2) WordBird (similar to Old Maid)

(3) Go Hunt (similar to Go Fish)

88 The Train Game: This unique manipulative strengthens left-to-right eye-tracking skills with intensive blending exercises that correct or prevent letter/word reversals. Developing smooth blending skills is critical to ensure reading fluency! There are 64 “train cars” with letters and phonograms printed on both sides of every car, one letter per car. Pictures on one side graphically illustrate every sound being introduced. These illustrated “sound byte” train cars are helpful to everyone, but are especially effective with beginners, English language learners, or dyslexic students.

88 Speaking Pathways: This lively 35-minute CD covers the same sounds and spelling patterns as those in Phonics Pathways, and is narrated by author Dolores Hiskes. Speaking Pathways is divided into two parts: Part One is “Letters and Sounds,” and Part Two is “Spelling Rules and Patterns.” The complete text of the CD is available as a free Web download, enabling students to read the sounds as they listen to them. English language learners will especially benefit from this clearly-enunciated CD.

There are 46 flash cards, 6 per page, with a letter or sound printed on each side of every card. One side also features a picture of an object beginning with the letter or sound being introduced whenever possible. (When first learning, many students find it difficult to hear these sounds within a word.)

Picture illustrations for sounds facilitate learning for everyone, and are especially useful to beginners, remedial students, and English language learners who can speak but not yet read English. Naming the picture and listening for its sound develops phonemic awareness, the important first step in learning how to read.

1. Name the picture, and listen for its beginning sound. (The letter sound being learned is colored green.)

2. Name the picture again, and say its beginning sound.

3. Turn the card over and say the name and sound of the letter.

4. Continue with the other cards in the same manner, always reviewing with letter cards already learned. Use the letter side for review, but do not hesitate to check the sound by looking on the picture side. Never guess!

These spelling cards are unique in that they illustrate sounds, not spellings, and include all possible spelling variations of each sound. Underneath each picture are words showing these variations, which are in bold type to help focus atten-tion and facilitate learning.

Read these words to your students, and see if they can hear the sound being learned. (At first many students will not yet be ready for this.) These cards can be used individually or in groups—the large, bold letters are easily visible by the whole class. Diacritical marks will greatly ease pronunciation and dictionary work, but are in smaller print to prevent distraction.

Truly, as one teacher remarked: “These are flash cards on steroids!”
