Letter From the Prez

If you got a copy of last month's Blues News you no doubt saw the list of upcoming festivals for the 2009 season. This list is constantly being updated and there is a pretty good festival coming to Jeffersonville, IN in June that needs to be added. “Smokin' on the River” will take place June 19 and 20 on the Riverstage in downtown Jeffersonville. If you have not had an opportunity to check out this ter-raced lawn amphitheater with its stage on the water and views of the Louisville skyline you are in for a treat. This festival will be a state barbecue competition sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society. The Grand Champion of this contest will qualify for the American Royal and Jack Daniels barbecue competitions. The festival is being produced by the Jeffersonville Parks and Recreation department and they are still looking for competitors. If you are a barbecue master looking for your deserved recognition then contact Dan Skaggs at 502/259-8734 or [email protected]. They will have a website up-and-running shortly at http://www.smokinontheriver.com/. Did I mention that there will be blues too? Come on now. You can't barbecue without the blues. That's like having the 4th of the July without fireworks. You just can't do it. The music schedule features da Mudcats and V-Groove on Friday night and The Travlin' Mojos, the Mad Dog Rhythym & Blues Quartet, Lamont Gillispie & 100 Proof Blues and Marilyn Kington & 2 Loose on Saturday.
I would like to send a thank you out to Dan Forte the Director of Programming at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts. Dan is the man responsible for bringing some top-notch blues shows to the Center and the Brown Theater recently including Susan Tedeschi and James Hunter, the Experience Hendrix Tour and Joe Bonamassa. The Kentucky Center has graciously allowed the KBS to set up there during blues-related shows to educate the public about our organization. At the sold-out Bonamassa show Dan took me and KBS members Greg McCullough and Sue O'Daniel into the wings to get a close-up view. And we were not disappointed. Bonamassa has really come into his own as a blues guitarist. At one point I saw Michael Stewart, KBS member and owner of Voluforms, who told me he had seen Bonamassa many time before but that night he was “totally off the hook.” If you missed this show fear not. Dan told me he will probably bring Bonamassa back next spring and has plans to do a Jonny Lang show in the fall at the Brown Theater. Pur-chase your tickets early before the show is sold out.
There are several excellent blues shows coming to our area in the next few months. Stevie Ray's will have Stacy Mitchhart (4/29), Al-bert Castiglia (5/14), The Beat Daddys (5/15) and Tab Benoit (5/17) among others. Check out their website at http://www.stevieraysbluesbar.com/ for more information. The Elk Creek Vineyards in Owenton, KY has announced their concert schedule for 2009 and they are bringing Buddy Guy back on Saturday, June 13. More info on-line at http://www.elkcreekvineyards.com/.
If you know someone who has not received recent issues of the newsletter it's because they let their KBS membership expire. Don't let his happen to you! Be sure to check your membership expiration date on the mailing label. It's in big, bold letters so you can't miss it. Be sure to send in your renewal form before the expiration date. You can also renew on-line at http://kbsblues.org/.

The Blues Foundation has announced the inductees for the Blues Hall of Fame in 2009, including "Soul Queen of New Orleans" Irma Thomas and multiple GRAMMY Award winner Taj Mahal, as well as late Chicago bluesman Son Seals and the Reverend Gary Davis. Austin club owner Clifford Antone, discographer Mike Leadbitter, and radio programmer and producer Bob Porter will be the non-performers inducted this year. The book "I Hear You Knockin'", by Jeff Han-nusch, was selected as a Classic of Blues Literature. The induction ceremony will be held at The Blues Foundation's Charter Member Dinner on Wednesday, May 6, at the Memphis Marriott Downtown in Memphis, Tennessee, the night before the 30th Blues Music Awards. Taj Mahal and Irma Thomas will both attend the induction ceremony. The following singles or album tracks will be inducted during the ceremony: "Boom Boom" by John Lee Hooker; "Caldonia" by Louis Jordan; and "Sitting on Top of the World" by the Mississippi Sheiks. These albums were also chosen for induction: "Amtrak Blues" by Alberta Hunter; "T-Bone Blues" by T-Bone Walker; and the 2 CD set "Blues With a Feeling" (Newport Folk Festival Classics) by Various Artists.
The Hall of Fame committee, consisting of scholars, record producers, radio programmers, and historians, is chaired by Jim O’'Neal, founding editor of Living Blues. On May 7, the night after the Blues Hall of Fame inductions, The Blues Foundation will present the Blues Music Awards for the thirtieth time, and will return to Memphis after staging last year's events in the Mississippi Delta for the first time. Performers, industry representatives, and fans from around the world will celebrate the best in Blues recording, songwriting and performance from the previous year at the Memphis Cook Convention Center in downtown Memphis, the city where the Awards have been held since their 1980 inception. The presenting sponsor will once again be The Gibson Foundation. BMI, Casey Family Pro-grams, Eagle Rock Entertainment, FedEx, Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company also sponsor the Blues Music Awards.

5 BLUES NEWS April 2009
It was a great time in Memphis, Blues every way you turned. Beale Street is truly a Blues Lovers Para-dise…barbeque to eat and Blues music by some of the best. We arrived in Memphis on Wednesday and I was able to attend the pre-competition concert featur-ing last year’s winners, Trampled Underfoot, and run-ners-up The Homemade Jamz Band and 2007 winner Sean Carney. They put on a great show. There were ten venues for bands and five for solo/duo acts. Our venue was at Alfred's, a new place with a large stage and lots of room for the crowd, which was very loud and supportive of our music. Unfortunately we did not win our venue so we only played two times but we made some great contacts, which will help with the future of the band. I saw about 30 bands (including Collard Greens and Gravy from Australia – check them out if you get the chance!) and solo/duo acts and everyone was very good. It was a great trip and a
wonderful learning experience. As a band we are going to do our best to compete again at the IBC, as we learned more from our mistakes and will know a lot more about how to compete in such an event. I would recommend that every true Blues fan needs to take a trip to Memphis so that you can experience what is like to be totally immersed in the Blues. Thanks to the KBS for our trip!

This is the first of what may become an irregular article .. one of Deb's Wild Rants…
As I hope you know, the Kentuckiana Blues Society hosts a Blues Talent Contest each year looking for local talent to send to the International Blues Challenge (IBC) in Memphis, which is put on by the Blues Foundation (http://blues.org). There are categories for Band, Solo/Duo and self-produced CD. Every year, we hear the same gripe -- "we don't com-pete 'cuz it's rigged". That's a whole bucket full of hooey -- I am telling you emphatically -- pure, utter, complete crap. Are you just a sore loser? Just because another act won, it has to be rigged? You didn't like them so the judges must be wrong? They didn't play your style of blues, so they shouldn't have won? Just exactly how is it that you think the contest is rigged? Ask me, I'll tell you the truth.
The Kentuckiana Blues Society board goes to great lengths to ensure that this contest is open and fair (much more so than do some other contests). We know there is a whole lot of blues talent here in Kentuckiana and we want to find the best act to represent us at the IBC in Memphis, so we need you to compete. Here are just a few of the things we do to ensure impartiality:
* Judges do not include any KBS board member -- we recruit independent judges from local media, bands, regional blues societies, etc. (and it's hard to find competent judges). * The order is play is done by blind draw 30 minutes before the contest. * The rules we employ are the same as the Blues Foundation's IBC (except that all members must be 21 on the day of the contest - this is due to the fact that we hold to contest in a bar). * The KBS contest is open the contest to all qualified acts (by IBC standards) from the entire region surrounding Louis-ville (and that includes Cincy and Indy) as well as the boundaries of the state. (Yes, we did have one contest that was won by a band from North Carolina -- we no longer allow entry by bands that far away.) We would assume that if a Lou-isville band wanted to compete in the Cincy or Indy contest, they would be accepted.
So, Quitcherbitchin and help us be your society -- if you have some ideas of how we can better support Blues in Louis-ville, let us know. Come to a meeting, write an article for the newsletter, participate! Is there some other reason you don't compete? Please let us know if there is something we can do better. Prove that you have the best blues act in town. En-ter the contest -- entry deadline is May 30, 2009.

Low Down Where The Snakes Crawl Cee Cee James Christina James © 2008
"Whiskey-Drenched Roadhouse Blues" says the caption below Cee Cee James' photo on her myspace web site. That's accurate, although perhaps even a bit of an understatement after listen-ing to her latest release, her first-full-length CD since returning to her blues roots not long ago. For-merly known as the "funky white girl" (real name Christina Fasano), James' moved from California
to the Pacific Northwest and slowly became one of America's best-kept secrets--even in blues circles. Her latest CD is a testament to her past, her link with the blues and her rock-solid spirituality. The 11 tunes mix roots, blues, rock, funk and even something that could be called "spiritual folk." Husband Rob Andrews lends his warm, fat electric slide guitar to the mix on several occasions; however, it is Cee Cee's emotion-drenched, soulful, sometimes gritty voice that accentuates every ache, every cry, laugh and growl in every tune. Comparisons to Janis aside, her voice is what anchors this CD. For someone hidden away, this artist has all the earmarks of a talent just waiting to burst onto the national scene. This girl's really "got it". And you should get it--the CD, that is.

Blues Walkin’ Like a Man Rory Block Stony Plain Records SPCD 1329
Rory Block's entire career--her life, actually--has been one long tribute to the blues. As modern-day artists go, this New Yorker has done more than almost anyone living today to preserve, interpret and keep the torch lit for the genre known as country blues. Her latest CD is no exception, being a literal tribute album to Son House. The legendary blues icon has been one of Block's mentors--although the
time was brief--and primary influences. She sings his tunes--and some are tunes all the old blues masters performed over the decades--with the same fervent passion and emotion as House himself. While there is no real new ground broken here, Rory Block fans will love this CD. And while often assimilating the style of her mentors and influences, Block always sounds like herself, with her trademark spit and fire, gut-busting passionate vocals, upper Midwestern twang, stomping foot, rail-splitting guitar and swooping slide. In short, this is just one more in a long line of priceless releases from an equally priceless national blues treasure.

M for Mississippi A Road Trip Through the Birthplace of the Blues Broke and Hungry Records DVD 2008
I bought this DVD based on what I have heard on XM radio and read in Blues Review by Roger Stolle, proprietor of Cat Head Records in Clarksdale Mississippi. Stolle is obviously a true lover of the blues, promoter of Mississippi blues, and wants to preserve those blues before the old-timers are gone. This DVD is a documentary of the Mississippi blues as recorded by Stolle, Jeff Konkell of Broke and Hungry
Records and Damien Blaylock, cinematographer.
The DVD takes us on a trip through Mississippi in a van, to find the homes of some of the last of the Mississippi old tim-ers, so they can be recorded for us. It is truly an eye opening DVD that transports the viewer to that area and helps put the music into perspective. Some of the cinematography is shot under the worst conditions imaginable, but Blaylock comes through magnificently. The music is nothing but Mississippi blues, unlike any other blues.
Artists on the DVD include Bill Abell, “Terry Harmonica” Bean, Robert “Wolfman” Belfour, R.L.Boyce, James “T-Model” Ford, Jimmy “Duck” Holmes, Wesley “Junebug” Jefferson, Steve “Lightnin’” Malcolm, The Mississippi Marvel, “Cadillac” John Nolden, Pat Thomas, L.C. Ulmer, Robert “Bilbo” Walker, and Foster Wiley, aka “Mister Tater”.
I highly recommend this DVD. It includes some good music, maybe introduces people that you may not be familiar with and shows you what true Mississippi Blues is.

Grace & Grit Deb Callahan Blue Pearl Records
Inspired and inspiring, anchored by the grace of hope, a beautiful smoky, sometimes breathy voice, excellent musicianship and far better songwriting than in most blues-centered recordings, Deb Cal-lahan's latest release of mostly originals also provides enough grit to give it plenty of guts--and life. Production skills by Chris Arms keep Callahan's voice out front where it belongs and make this CD also more melodic than traditional blues fare. The 15-song list begins on an urgent note with "Food
on the Table," written from Callahan's social-work day-job perspective. Just a short time later, Callahan's sandpaper & silk voice does a tremendous job paying homage to one of her favorite musical influences with an a cappella excerpt from Nina Simone's "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to be Free." And this is not to imply she does all this totally by herself. Longtime bandmates Garry Lee (bass) and lead guitarist Allen James provide superbly crisp and skilled instrumentation for their leader. Some other tunes which showcase these folks, and which bear mentioning anyway, are: the incredibly slow-moving, growly, somber, dirge-like, this-is-real-blues "Guilty"; the sweeping rootsy electric "Carry Me" (with Arms on slide guitar); and the bittersweet jazzy strut of "Happy Hour Girl." There's not any glaring weakness on this CD--Callahan's third-- which was released in September 2008 and which debuted in November at the number 16 spot on the Living Blues Radio charts. Look for more national exposure, positive press and even more great songs from Callahan in the future.

Beautiful Bonnie Bramlett Rockin’ Camel Music 2008
Like fine wine, cliché or not, legendary singer Bonnie Bramlett has aged very, very well. Her new CD is indeed, beautiful. There's a mix of tunes over the 11 song list--songs of faith, hope, loss, risk, and well, life. Bramlett proves she can still sing, and the extremely well-produced CD allows crisp, clean vocals and excellent instrumentation to shine through. There seems to be a bit more grace
than grit, more polish than spit on this CD--but that only stands to reason as Bramlett has just about done it all over her lengthy career. And, to make things better, daughter Bekka lends her own considerable rootsy sass as a backup vocalist. Several tunes stand out: She owns "For What It's Worth" (no offense to Stephen Stills), even with the funk-and-soul treat-ment she gives it; her version of Billy Joe Shaver's "I Do Believe" is good; and Gary Nicholson's country-blues "Bless 'em All" is also noteworthy. The two that really put the fire back into the mix are another Nicholson/Bekka Bramlett tune, the familiar "Strongest Weakness" and Randall Bramblett's "Shake Something Loose", a slow-burning blues/rock number an-chored by Bekka's strong support vocal and Kevin Holly's wicked slide guitar. Time has taken nothing away from this in-credible artist: in fact, if anything, at least in some ways, Bonnie Bramlett has only gotten better.

The Jelly Rollers Self Titled Motorhome Records, 2001
This CD, originally released in 2001 is being pushed now to “prequel” the upcoming release of a new CD, due out this summer. This 4 person band hails from the Seattle area and labels themselves as “alt-blues”. The cover alone is “alt-cover”. It is a pen and ink drawing that looks like one of those educational cartoons that shows body organs (or perhaps aliens in pajamas) playing guitar and harp.
You have to see it.
Anyway, there are 10 songs on the CD, three of which are originals written by Darren Loucas who plays guitar and sings. Other members are Sean Divine (vocals and harmonica), Jim Steffen (bass), and Dan Weber (Drums). The band has been together for 10 years as a group. They have opened for Bo Diddley, James Cotton, Little Charlie and the Nightcats, Janiva Magness, Guitar Shorty and James Booker.
A couple of their songs have a drum beat that is a country shuffle, notably “Rueben” and “Keep Your Hands Off”. “Rollin and Tumblin’” and “Pretty Thing” are the most recognizable songs on the CD. “Reno Factory” is one of the best songs on the CD. On it, just a slow vocal and acoustic guitar make up most of the song. “Ash Lee” one of the originals sounds vaguely familiar and the voice is a perfect Paul Simon sound alike. “Blue Moon Blues” an original by Loucas is an instru-mental and is my favorite. Good guitar playing and beat with harp fills make the song a good one.
This CD is a creative effort by the band and has some real high points. It is a decent CD and can be found at CD Baby, I Tunes, Napster and Rhapsody. You can also check them out at www.jellyrollers.com.

Back To The River Susan Tedeschi Verve Music Group 00602517755772
For Susan Tedeschi fans, her latest release will be something to enjoy.
Granted, her 11 mostly original song list is "typical" Tedeschi fare--if you can call anything she does "typical." Perhaps simply saying it sounds very much like her and leaving it at that would suffice. "Back to the River" is carried by Tedeschi's always-powerful, ever-soulful, some-times gritty, push-the-edge voice, excellent songwriting (all tunes co-written with a single exception) and equally soulful slide guitar from husband Derek Trucks. Tedeschi provides one cover--which is one of the CD's best tunes--and that's Allen Toussaint's "Break in the Road." Other tunes of note are "People" and "Revolutionize Your Soul" for their message content, and the urgent longing of the title track. In addition, and as expected, Tedeschi also serves up a healthy dose of her own excellent lead guitar work. So, what if you're not yet a Susan Tedeschi fan, or if you've not heard of her? Well, as the old commercial said: "Try it, you'll like it." Absolutely!

Never Been Hurt Vickie Carrico Cuppa Joe Records
The title track to Vickie Carrico's debut is only part of a line...the rest of it says "like you hurt me." While this isn't a blues
recording per se, that is blues. Her 13-song CD, a bit urban in flavor and covering blues, rock and soul-style tunes, is very well produced and allows her emotion-drenched vocals to shine through. They would, anyway. Carrico's voice is the bedrock of this CD: soulful, full, rich, some-times Joplinesque and gritty, sometimes growly, one of those powerful stretch-and-bend-but-never-break kind of voices. This is not to say that other elements don't sparkle, as well: Take for instance Jack Pearson's greasy electric slide guitar on several tracks (such as the rootsy-rockin' "Let Go" and the funky "Just Dance"). And backup vocals from Etta Britt and Carolyn Martin are excellent. Carrico provides a mix of original songs (co-written with bassist Dave Martin) and a few covers by Isaac Hayes and "Doctor John" (Mac Rebennack). This CD, in short, is one where all the elements come to-gether to produce a great, no, fantastic, listen-ing experience.
