Nov. 29, Race 7 at Yonkers: What Really

Happened

An analysis by Bill Finley Fans and bettors are still looking for answers after anexacta payoff on a Nov. 29 race at Yonkers yielded asuspiciously low payoff and the price was sliced by 87percent within a matter of a few seconds. The New YorkGaming Commission has launched an investigation into therace and will eventually release its findings and clarify what

wagering time” or the time when the judge closes the bettingwindows was 9:20.47. They beat the clock by one and twoseconds. None of which means the situation was handled perfectlyor that there isn’t a better way. There’s some question as to whether the judges might nothave been a few seconds late in closing the windows.Yonkers was not posting a running time in seconds on itssimulcast feed at that time. When the race began, we knowonly that it was 9:20. Since the Nov. 27 race Yonkers has taken the step ofadding a running clock, with seconds, to its feed, making iteasier to ascertain the exact moment a race begins. The New York Gaming Commission may also want toexamine what is the appropriate time for the judges to closethe betting windows. In the race being investigated, thestarting gate car drives away from the field about a sixteenthof a mile before the field hits the finish line, which also marksthe start of the race. In that time, at least seven secondselapsed, more than enough time to see that Fort Valley Aswas going to get a clear and uncontested lead. Did the judges close the windows when the starting gatecar pulled away or when the field hit the official starting

point? In this particular race it’s an important question, onethat, for now remains unanswered. Though it appears that no rules were broken and theKentucky bettors risked their money like anyone else andwere rewarded because their strategy proved to be awinning one, this particular race left a bad andunnecessary taste in the mouths of a lot of bettors. Asimple change in the practices or rules could easilyprevent this from happening again. Just close the bettingwindows 10 seconds earlier and the “bell beaters” wouldhave to come up with a new way to play the game.

14-YO Anvil Raider N hasbeen a win machine this year(photo by JJ Zamaiko)

Big Mcdeal is among the tophorses who will sell Jan. 20 atthe Meadowlands (Lisa photo)

At 14, Anvil Raider N Attempts to Become

Sport’s Winningest Horse in 2013.

By Lucas Marquardt His racing days are downto a precious few, but14-year-old Anvil Raider Nstill has time to put anoteworthyaccomplishment on hiscareer record. He'll entertonight's ninth race atNorthfield Park with 21victories on the year from38 starts, which has himtied for first place in the

category of most victories on the year with Tracy's Song. The latter hasn't raced since July. So, with a win tonight or inwhat will be his last career start a week later the NewZealand bred gelding will end his career as the winningeststandardbred in North America in 2013. It's not at all unusual for a 14-year-old to lead the continentin victories as it has happened ten times since 1975. No onewants to claim a 14-year-old because their racing days arenumbered. Standardbreds are not allowed to race onceturning 15. So trainers can get away with racing them in lowlevel claimers where they outclass the field, theirconnections knowing they have little to fear at the claimingbox. That's been the case with Anvil Raider N, who has beendominating the $2,000 and $3,000 claiming ranks in Ohioand in Michigan throughout the year. The irony is that owner-trainer Will Johnson doesn't have asingle winner's circle picture of a horse who does little butwin. Anvil Raider N has a terrible habit of kicking after hisraces are over, so much so that it's dangerous to take himinto a winner's circle. "He kicks after the races. He is out of control, starts firingboth hinds," Johnson said. "It’s an adrenaline thing. Most oftime he doesn't do it until after the race, but sometimes willdo it in the post parade. You don't want to go to the winner'scircle with him because most of time he'll kick right after therace. As long as he is moving he seems to be OK. But whenyou stop him after the race he starts kicking and he kickshard."

Johnson said that the kicking problems have put himthrough so much stress that he is somewhat relieved thathis old gelding's career is about to end. "He could really hurt someone, so I am kind of glad hisracing is coming to an end," he said. "It's not enjoyable torace him because it's too stressful. I am always worryingabout someone getting kicked. If he kicked somebody inthe wrong spot he could kill them." Anvil Raider N's regular driver is Ronnie Wrenn Jr., who,like his equine partner, leads North America in wins thisyear. He'll be back in the bike tonight when Anvil Raider Nleaves from post No. 2 in the $3,000 claimer. He's comingoff a poor showing last week when he was last ateven-money, but Johnson said his horse got a bad trip thatnight and that the race is a throw out. If so, win No. 22 could come as soon as tonight.Johnson would see it as a nice accomplishment, but saysit's not exactly something he has been focusing on. "I never really paid attention to it until two or three weeksago when a writer from the Cleveland Plain Dealer calledme up to write a story and told me about it," he said. “It's nothing I have been shooting for. What I've tried to doall year is be fair to him and every time I enter him I puthim in a race I want to put him a spot where he can win. Ifhe did it would be nice but it's not something I set out todo." Johnson said his immediate plan is to retire his horse tohis farm in Monroe, Michigan after the first of the year. Buthe fears that the old campaigner will soon grow bored, sohe would prefer to find someone to give him a try as ariding horse. He said the horse has never kicked on thefarm, so doesn't suspect it will be an issue for anyoneadopting him.

Trainer Dean Eckley Hit With 5-Year Suspension

The judges at Colonial Downs have hit trainer Dean Eckleywith a five-year suspension andfined him $10,000 after a horse hetrained, Jovial Joker N, testedpositive for the banned substancedarbepoetin, also known asaranesp. By Brett SturmanRace 7, B-1 PaceCODE WORD was in against the State Treasurer types thelast couple times he was seen here and raced well last out atPhilly against the classy Summer Camp. Winner of over$200K each of the last two seasons looks to fit well in here. CHICAGO HANOVER closed well a few back at Yonkersagainst Mr. Hasani and should be close from the rail; anumber of these Lambert trainee's seem hit or miss. BLATANTLY GOOD lost a step this year but is no strangerto this track. HYPNOTIC BLUE CHIP makes his secondstart back from the long layoff but lands post 10. He didhave solid late pace in his return but it was the 95/1 bomb tohis inside tonight that still won that race. ROLL ON exits thatsame race and is tough to ignore; an obvious short pricedcontender. BETTORS GLASS shows some strong rivals onview; DiDomenico-trained gelding has loads of class.

Race 8, B-2 PaceTWIN B HOLLISTER goes for Simpson who won here lastweek and has been doing good work this past week atYonkers; might go far on the move to the big track as a shotin the dark in wide open race. PANESTHETIC dropped tothis level last out and had no excuses while tiring on the frontend; not the horse we saw here with Coleman in the past. MORTAL ZIN drops out of that race with Alexie Mattosie, butthat was now three weeks ago. Tough call. LONG LIVEROCK drops and finds the rail; it looks like he was muchsharper earlier in the year. ROCKNROLL JEWEL wasn'tbad last out when he made up some late ground from animpossible spot; those rivals that he beat here two backprobably aren't much worse than these.

Race 9, B-1 PaceFOREIGN OFFICER isn't as good as he used to be but Fordis very playable right now and this one was Dave Miller'schoice of almost half the field. $115,000 earner in 2013makes his 43rd start of the season. MORGAN SHARK isthe likely favorite for impossible to ignore connections fromthe rail, but he makes just his first start since June. Qualifiers were good. ERLE DALE was caught here onopening night when leading into the stretch headwinds;

those last two at Yonkers albeit against better, aren'tcompletely inspiring. VOICE OF TRUTH is anotherreturning from a lengthy layoff; would have stormed bythese about 6 months ago. LUCKY MAN has class butwas no match for the #1 in his recent qualifier;ABBEYLARA goes for the hot Saunders barn.

Race 10, C-1 PaceTREND SPOTTER goes from Bendis to trainer Federicoand I believe that angle produced a sharp horse here lastyear in Whirl Monroe. This one does have some class tohim and shows some superior rivals on view; hunch playhas a shot. SONIC DANCER looks to be an obvious shortpriced contender from the rail but is no cinch; he'sunderachieved the last couple years. MAJOR TIPPERqualified well for top connections; likely to be going forwardearly. What on earth has happened to the Levy champ oftwo years ago, REAL NICE? STOLEN CAR would havebeaten these over the summer but has worked his waydown the ladder since then and now lands post 10. PEMBROKE DEWEY is another possibility; Ford off to agood start.
