Ahoy NLSC Sailors! Happy Holidays to All!

As the 2016 sailing year winds down, we still have one big NLSC event left to look forward to. Our club’s

annual Holiday Party kicks off at the embassy Suites, Bloomington on December 16th. In appreciation for all

you do and what you mean to the club (and to give you a bit of holiday cheer), we have dipped into the NLSC

coffers this year, reducing the $33 cost per person to $20 for our members. What a great value for the

opportunity to rub shoulders with fellow NLSCers, swap sea stories, and enjoy each other’s company. Hope to

see everyone there with an appetite and dancing shoes on! Remember to bring your wallets and purses to help

us donate big bucks through our silent auction to the St. Croix Sailing School’s children’s scholarship fund.

As I wrote a couple of months ago, I am now completely engrossed in what I think is the most amazing sporting

event of all times. Thirty heroic sailors left Les Sables-d’Olonne, France in their IMOCA 60‘s just over twenty-

five days ago to embark on the Vendée Globe’s solo, non-stop, unassisted, around the world yacht race. As I

write this yarn, the leaders have traversed the Atlantic Ocean from the northern hemisphere to the southern

hemisphere, passed beneath Africa’s Cape Hope and are racing their way across the southern Indian Ocean.

You would think that after thousands of years of mankind plying the oceans in sailboats, not much could be

improved upon, but this year’s leaders are absolutely smashing all previous Vendée Globe records. The game

changer is foil technology allowing the hulls to ride above the ocean shedding a significant amount of drag and

increasing speeds well above 20 knots in moderate breezes. Though the field is spread to about 4900 miles due

to “old” yachts participating with the foiled boats, just eleven miles separates the first and second place

skippers. With the lead changing multiple times, it’s a nail biter!

However, it’s not all smooth sailing for some of those brave souls. Thus far, four sailors have been forced to

abandon their quest for glory. Some succumbed to equipment failure; others have dropped out due to damaged

caused by a collision with floating debris or wildlife. In past races, issues such as medical problems, capsizings,

and sailors lost at sea have also played into the equation. Typically, about a half to two thirds of the starting

sailors finish the race. I estimate that there is perhaps just under fifty-five days left of the race.... anything can

happen! If you are interested in tracking the race, check out http://tracking2016.vendeeglobe.org/hp5ip0/ .

Well... with 23 days left to shop for the grandkids, I better cut this short and get busy. Whatever your

celebration is during this festive season, I hope it brings you peace, joy and fellowship.

Fair Winds and Following Seas,

Scott

Commodore Scott Woolfrey took the helm for the November NLSC meeting.

Following a short business meeting, the group took a different “tack” as we all

participated in a sailing mixer. Scott numbered off all of us and moved us to

assigned tables. Each group had several tasks: name our boat, assign a skipper, and

list the five most important things we would bring aboard a charter (not including

the usual items provided by a charter company). The lists included items such as:

duct tape, first aid kit, a sense of group harmony, extra lines, hand-held GPS, cell

phone, food, potato for use as a plug, water, booze (of course), other electronic

gadgets, and more.

The mic was open for rest of the night. Members were captivated hearing tales of sailors enduring

treacherous storms, enjoying beautiful scenery, consuming delicious food, and much more. It was a very

fun evening for all who attended.

Experts estimate that there are over 8,000 shipwrecks in the Great Lakes.

Of that total Lake Superior only holds around 350 of these historic

treasures, but because of her cold clear deep waters and lack of Zebra

mussels, they are some of the best wrecks in the Great Lakes. Ken has

been diving Lake Superior for over 40 years. Through his amazing video,

Ken will take you on a tour of these underwater museums as he presents

"Lake Superior's Best Wrecks."

NLSC extends a welcome to new member, Jody Beresford.

Although Jody is new to the club, her husband, Bob Mayer, has

been a member for over five years and serves on the NLSC

Board of Directors.

Jody reports that her sailing background is somewhat limited;

however, she’s actually sailed both domestically and

internationally with Bob on Lake Harriet and on their various

trips to the Chesapeake Bay, BVI, Apostle Islands, and St. Lucia. They are currently talking about a trip to

Croatia in 2017 and the Windward Islands in 2018. Jody and Bob do not own a sailboat right now. They

were powerboat owners when they lived in Columbus, Ohio.

Besides sailing, Jody is an avid Yogi, is known as always having a book in her hand, and is always

involved in a variety of activities including family and travel. Her family, besides Bob, includes a daughter

in Atlanta who used to teach sailing in the BVI and another daughter in New York City.

Welcome, Jody!

At the end of October, I checked one more item off my bucket list: sailing in Chesapeake Bay!

The Delmarva Sailing School in Rock Hall, MD sent an alert to former students that space was available on the

first leg of returning its boat to the Caribbean for winter classes. The modest price for the first three days, $399,

made this an offer I couldn’t refuse!

We set out at twilight on a Friday morning aboard SV Gallivant with strong winds generating small craft

warnings. It was an exciting sail south on a broad reach down to Solomon Island Marina. Great winds! We

arrived earlier than expected in mid-afternoon. The Marina is an upscale facility – very nice. And after our

day’s adventure, we felt we had earned our happy hour and dinner at the “Dry Dock” restaurant.

We left the marina early Saturday and joined the parade of assorted vessels migrating south for the winter. The

light headwinds meant we had to motor a lot with our sails trimmed close hauled. Slow progress that day

Page 8: Photo Contest Winner · 2017-12-11 · list the five most important things we would bring aboard a charter (not including the usual items provided by a charter company). The lists

delayed our arrival until after dark at the Deltaville Yachting Center Marina in Virginia. The marina’s narrow

entrance required a careful approach and became a great night drill for the crew. We landed late, but were

happily surprised by the marina’s courtesy car, which was available to rush us to Taylor’s Restaurant just before

it closed at 8:30 p.m. The weather had become noticeably warmer and the sounds of frogs and crickets filled the

air.

The last day of sailing mirrored the day before: light winds mostly in the direction we were headed. So, it was

another motor-assisted day on the water. We arrived at the Little Creek Marina late in the afternoon to complete

the journey. We took our gear off the boat as they prepared to welcome three sailors for the next leg of the trip –

an ASA 108 Offshore Passage class from Norfolk, Virginia to Bermuda. The final leg would be another ASA

108 class, sailing from Bermuda to St. Thomas.

Delmarva Sailing School has some interesting programs and perks worth checking out. If you take an ASA

course with them, you are considered an alum and get first crack at half-price offers. If your schedule is flexible,

you can pick up some great sailing experiences. I completed the ASA 108 Offshore Passage course the first

week of May going from Bermuda to Norfolk, VA. Dalmarva School is able to keep the prices low because

they are transporting the boat anyway. Check out their website: www.delmarvasailingschool.com for more

information. I’d be happy to talk to anyone who would like more information about my experience with the

school.

Thanks to those of you who have already renewed your membership for 2017! You are appreciated!

For those of you who are planning to renew, why not do it after you finish reading this fine edition of the

Bearings?

Remember: All members (except those who joined after September 1st, 2016) need to renew their membership

which will expire December 31st . As communicated in the October Bearings, we have eliminated the “dual”

option and instead will just have an individual membership for $25. All members need to fill out a two-page

individual application which includes our new Mutual Release disclaimer. On-line renewal is not available at

this time. Forms are available as follows:

1. Print out an application on pages 12 & 13 of this Bearings newsletter.

2. On our web site. Go to and log on using your member ID#. (If you do not know your number, e-mail

[email protected] and I will send you your member ID#.) Click on NLSC Membership in the left

sidebar. This will pull up the membership application which includes the new Mutual Release

disclaimer so you can print it out.

3. Renew at the November Club meeting or December Holiday Party. Applications will be available

to renew at those events. Just bring your check book.

Fill out the complete two-page application with disclaimer. If your personal information has not changed,

you may skip that part of the application; just fill in your name at the top. The Mutual Release disclaimer

part of the application must be filled in, signed and dated. The renewal process will be held up if we do not

receive the complete application. Send the completed two-page form, along with your check, to the address on

the application.

Mutual Release of Liability and Indemnification As a member or guest of Northern Lights Sailing Club (NLSC) and a participant in events planned and executed by NLSC; I

understand that boating of any type, duration or location can be hazardous. I recognize the inherent risks of engaging in these

events can include: death, injury to my person and loss of or damage to my property.

I KNOWINGLY ACCEPT THESE RISKS AND FURTHER AGREE AS FOLLOWS:

I, ________________________, hereby enter into this Mutual Release of Liability and Indemnification (hereinafter “Mutual

Release”) in consideration for (1) my membership in or being a guest of the Northern Lights Sailing Club, (2) my participation in

events sponsored by the Northern Lights Sailing Club and Sailing Opportunities communicated by Northern Lights Sailing Club

(hereafter referred to as “NLSC Events”, and (3) my desire not to subject my own personal assets to the risk of litigation, claims of

any type and actual or potential adverse judgment. On behalf of myself, next-of-kin, trustees, administrators, executors, heirs and assigns, I HEREBY RELEASE the NORTHERN

LIGHTS SAILING CLUB and all of its officers, directors, members, crew members (specifically including the Trip Chair, Captain(s)

that may arise from or occur during my participation in NLSC Events.

On behalf of myself, next-of-kin, trustees, administrators, executors, heirs and assigns I further AGREE NOT TO SUE THE

RELEASED PARTIES — for any reason whatsoever, including their strict liability, carelessness, negligence or gross negligence —

for any damages, loss cost, expense or other relief that may be available to me or my next-of-kin, trustees, administrators, executors,

NLSC Events.

I fully understand that any boat and equipment made available during my participation in NLSC Events COME WITHOUT ANY

WARRANTIES, GUARANTEES OR OTHER REPRESENTATIONS BY THE RELEASED PARTIES, including any warranty of

merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose.

I agree that I shall not rely on the judgment of any of the RELEASED PARTIES during my participation in NLSC Events. I assume

the responsibility to judge my fitness to participate in NLSC Events. I further recognize that I ALONE AM RESPONSIBLE FOR

MY SAFETY while participating in NLSC Events.

I acknowledge that IF I (MY NEXT-OF KIN, TRUSTEES, ADMINISTRATORS, EXECUTORS, HEIRS, OR ASSIGNS) IGNORE

THIS AGREEMENT AND COMMENCE ANY ACTION, I (MY NEXT-OF KIN, TRUSTEES, ADMINISTRATORS,

EXECUTORS, HEIRS, OR ASSIGNS) WILL BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL ATTORNEYS FEES, WITNESS FEES,

EXPENSES AND COURT COSTS INCURRED BY THE RELEASED PARTIES.

I hereby agree that Minnesota law shall govern my participation in NLSC Events and the construction, interpretation and enforcement

of this Mutual Release, regardless of the location(s) in which an NLSC Event is held or in which my death, injury, property damage or

loss may arise. In the event that a court determines that any provision of this Mutual Release is unenforceable or invalid, I agree that

it will not affect the enforceability or validity of the remaining portions of this Mutual Release.

I UNDERSTAND BY MAKING AND SIGNING THIS MUTUAL RELEASE I SURRENDER VALUABLE RIGHTS,

INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO ANY RIGHT TO SUE THE RELEASED PARTIES.

I CERTIFY THAT I HAVE CAREFULLY READ AND UNDERSTOOD ALL PARTS OF THIS MUTUAL RELEASE AND
