The Capital Campaign continued in its second year in 2017. Highlights include:
1. Parking Lot In February, we began the renovation of the parking l o t b y r e m o v i n g o l d asphalt, regrading for better water drainage and laying new asphalt. We added a regulation sand volleyball court with water cooled sand, a fence and l ight ing. A community garden with cedar boxes and controlled irrigation was created. We added a lighted basketball court, r e m o v e d a l l t h e o l d landscaping, and installed a completely new irrigation system, all new trees, plants, and shrubs.
2. Front Landscaping The front of the church, off Elliot, was designed with natural stone veneer walls, three cacti, and twelve paloverde trees, all of wh ich were cen te red around the cross. The front entrance to the church s a n c t u a r y w a s r e -landscaped with a natural stone wall on the west side of the entrance. We also added new trees, plants, and shrubs with attractive boulders. This area was designed by Chris Lueck.
3. Improved Accessibility The Bride’s Room, off the narthex, was remodeled into an ADA compliant, u n i s e x a c c e s s i b l e restroom with a shower and small lounge area.
This project was designed and the construction was managed by Tom Brown.
4. Campus Entrance The entrance to the church w a s r e d e s i g n e d t o accommodate a pick up and drop off zone for autos and vans to reduce the pedestrian-vehicle conflict in the area. We replaced the canvas cover over the f ront entrance of the church and added ‘hat channel’ for shade as well as new p lan t ing and lighting.
5. Patio Landscaping The church patio was re-landscaped wi th new irrigation, plants, shrubs and granite ground cover, designed by Chris Lueck.
6. Safety & Security I n t h e s u m m e r , w e replaced 15 doors and locks in the preschool and church classrooms. All the wooden beams around the patio were replaced and new lighting was installed for improved visibility.
7. Signage A new state of the art digital sign was installed at the front of the church, visible from Elliot Road and other signs were installed off Juniper.

CHILDREN’S MINISTRYThank you, Dayspring for your support of our Church-wide Family Picnic, everyone had a great time and enjoyed an afternoon of fellowship, games and delicious desserts.
February 4th is Souper Bowl Sunday. The morning of the big game, children in BeTween will share information about hunger in our community and be collecting monetary donations for a local food bank at both the 9:00 and 10:30 services.
It’s time again for Parable of Talents. We will be reviewing the Parable in Sunday school on February 11. Children can sign up on the Patio on February 11 and 18 to use their talents to create something to sell or share with the congregation. Selling and performing take place on Sunday, February 25 after both the 9:00 and 10:30 services. There is no cost to sign up! If you have questions, please email [email protected].
We will again be hosting another Family Pot Luck event on Wednesday, March 28. We are looking for a few more station leaders to help us share the journey through Holy Week with children and their families. If you are interested in a small theatrical role email [email protected].
We are also still looking for a couple of Sunday school assistant teachers to help us out in our PreK – Kindergarten and 3rd and 4th grade classes. If you are able to help out even if just for a couple of Sundays, please email [email protected].

She attended Tempe High School through her sophomore year and completed her high school education at the Metropolitan Arts Institute in Phoenix. After high school, Sarah went to the University of Southern Cal i fo rn ia where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Cum Laude.
Sarah is thrilled and immensely grateful to be joining the youth program at Dayspring! She was a Quaker Youth Minister for five years in California, creating curriculum and integrating the main tenets of equali ty, peace, community, uni ty, integr i ty, and simplicity; values she herself holds very dear. She also works for Circle The City when she is not having a ball with youth! Please greet Sarah and join us in welcoming her to Dayspring!

Senior High Lock-In We had an incredible senior high lock-in where we spent Friday night-to-Saturday morning at Dayspring and then did a lovely hike. Thanks to Ruth and Mark Boyle and Gary Lueck for being awesome adult volunteers! Special thanks to Ruth for above-and-beyond planning, organizing, and a beautiful Friday night devotional.
Youth SundayDuring recent weeks we have been preparing for Youth Sunday, scheduled for February 4. Our theme is “Parables of Jesus: A Good Foundation." We will share music, prayer, scr ip ture, reflections by our seniors and a warm welcome to all. Please save the date and join us in worship on February 4!
Following the 10:30 service on Youth Sunday, all youth are invited to participate in a fellowship and team-building activity. Friends are welcome! [include details if available}
Confirmation Confirmation is open for youth in 7th grade and older. Confirmation explores what we believe, how God is working in our lives, the life and teachings of Jesus in the Bible, and the United Methodist Church around the world. The 2018 confirmation journey at Dayspring includes meeting together as a covenant group, sharing a meal together, reading the Gospels , engaging in spir i tual pract ices, participating in worship, visiting other faith communities, and many varied ways of being formed in faith. Pastor Jeff led our first confirmation session about God's Creation.
It is not too late to sign up! Together we will practice ways to live out our faith in action. Questions are welcome and encouraged! COVENANT GROUPSCovenant Groups are a small group ministry at Dayspring, guided by Pastors Jeff, Joel, Dot & Shirley. The next 5-week series will begin on February 25 and continue through March 25, meeting weekly from 11:45am-1pm on Sundays in Fellowship Hall. We will join in spiritual practices together and foster relationships based on sharing and compassion. Small Group Spiritual Formation: TIME TO WONDER Do you wonder where the time went every week? Do you need a dedicated time for prayerful peace in your life? Join us on Thursday evenings at 7:30pm in the Library to renew your spiritual life! An hour spent together with others in lectio divina or contemplative prayer or prayer imagery will provide the opportunity to deepen your closeness with God. CHRISTIAN MINDFULNESSWe embrace the process of transformation in Christ, both in ourselves and in others. Learn the tools for this process: Centering Prayer, Lectio Divina, and Contemplative Prayer. Join Pastor Jeff and Joseph Lambrecht for this 7-week Lenten series starting the week of February 5. Sessions will be offered on: Mondays from 6:30 - 7:30pm (Adult Room), Tuesdays from 1:30 - 2:30pm (Friendship Village), and Thursdays from 10:00 - 11:00am (Adult Room).
GRIEF SUPPORTEveryone experiences grief differently, but having skills to process life after loss can make life bearable and hopefully, life giving. Beginning Monday, February 5 at 6:30pm, Dayspring will be hosting a Grief Support Group. This class will introduce skills that persons may find helpful in their journey of healing. If you, or someone you know needs support in grieving a major loss in your life, such as a death or broken relationship, or job loss, please come and experience a safe place to process in community. This support group will continue on the the first and third Monday’s of the month and will conclude in May. The first two sessions are open to all persons interested in joining. Please register by contacting Pastor Joel at [email protected]. Pastor Joel Bullock and Psychologist, Dr. Sharon Zygowicz will facilitate the sessions.

The 10:30am adult Contemporary Issues class continues its focus on the Judeo-Christian tradition: its symbols and metaphors and how our modern culture often misinterprets them. Our confusion often lies between the literal and metaphorical interpretations of our religious stories. We will use many of the works of Joseph Campbell, author, teacher, and best known for his work in the field of comparative mythology, to re-examine the function of Judeo-Christian symbols as the key to spiritual understanding and mystical revelation. He explores the common symbols of western religions, holding them to the light and reinterpreting them in the context of his remarkable knowledge of world mythology. Join us in our study and discussion of Campbell's works.
The Explorer’s class will take up two new series in February. Randy Hamilton will lead a 2 week session on Michael Moore’s film, “Where to Invade Next? This film illustrates the travels of Moore to different countries while exploring their health care systems, prison systems, etc to illustrate the differences between their systems and ours. You won’t to miss this informative and somewhat surprising revelation of how our social systems differ radically from those of other modern countries. Later in the month, Nancy Jamison and Bethany Lambrecht will lead two sessions on Prison Reform. You won’t want to miss these two important series at 9 a.m. in the Adult Room.
WEDNESDAY EVENING FELLOWSHIP WEF begins February 21 and continues through March 21. Dinner is served at 5:30 and classes meet at 6:30pm. Dinner is a wonderful time for fellowship and forming new friendships on Wednesday evenings. We are looking for help with hosting dinner on Wednesday Evenings. Really Interesting Stuff about the Bible and TheologyWould you like to take a Bible or theology class but cannot commit on a weekly basis? Then this Wednesday Evening Fellowship session is for you! Each week i s a s tand a lone presentation on a given topic. Feel free to attend one, all, or a few. The first four presentations have Biblical themes. The final session explores the life, theology, and ethics of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who joined resistance to the Holocaust. Sessions include:

Let's Talk... about White Privilege
As Christians, we are called to think deeply, pray fervently and w o r k u n c e a s i n g l y f o r t h e betterment of our society and world. And yet, many of us find it hard to understand and engage with others on challenging topics. Doing so is uncomfortable, painful, d r a i n i n g a n d m a y n o t b e productive in the ways we imagine. Some would rather keep quiet, peruse social media and resolve to live the Golden Rule. Others are consumed with the tasks of work and life that by the end of each day, there is little time and energy to devote to difficult discussion. Even on our best days, it is hard work to deepen our relationships with others and within ourselves.
As United Methodists, acting for justice is in our DNA. We must challenge the areas of privilege found in our own lives, in the lives of those around us and in society at large.
While the scope of this topic is much bigger than five weeks can handle, we will begin to unpack what white privilege is (and is not), discover common stereotypes and generalizations that are found in everyday life, analyze racism in current events and how whiteness permeates societal issues. We’ll also learn to engage with people who are different, and explore how privilege impacts our view of God.
Throughout the course, each person will be encouraged to examine and reflect on how they have been impacted by race and privilege. The goal is NOT to produce shame or guilt. The goal is to seek God’s guidance and transformation to create a peaceful beloved community where all people are valued and honored.

Dayspring United Methodist Women held their annual prayer breakfast on Saturday January 13. What an inspiring event! We heard how God has moved mountains and changed lives through, love, adversity and realization! What a blessing it is to have members in our church as examples of Christian love.
In February we have a variety of meetings where you can find yourself and find a friendly person!
Greeting Card Circle will meet on Thursday Feb. 1 at 9:30am in the Room 112 at Dayspring. Join this amazing group of crafters to help create greeting cards that give twice – once to the person receiving the card and again when the money is given to support ministries of the United Methodist Women. Our monthly unit meeting will be on Thursday Feb. 15 at 7:00pm in the Adult Room at Dayspring. We are super excited to have as our guest speaker, Melissa Hahn, the Chairperson of the Refugee Committee here at Dayspring. She’ll be talking about the refugee crisis on a global scale and how resettlement works. She’ll also talk about how our Dayspring Ministry works to serve refugees. Ms. Hahn also helps people communicate effectively and build meaningful relationships with people who are from different cultures via her company, InterculturalMelissa.com.
As part of our hands on ministry projects we’ll also put together kits for Justa Center. Items that they need include: Unopened Toiletries, Toilet Paper, Office Supplies (Paper, Pens, etc.), Cleaning Products, Reading Glasses, New Socks, Styrofoam Cups, Paper Plates, Coffee, Sugar, Creamer, Facial Tissues, Paper Towels, Hand Soap, Laundry Soap, Books and Magazines.
Dayspring’s UMW also has a reading program. We have books on all kinds of topics from spirituality to justice and children’s books too! DAYSPRING PRESCHOOL & KINDERGARTEN Registration for the 2018-2019 school year starts January 25th! Packets are available in the Preschool/Kindergarten office, and also in the Church office beginning January 22nd. Church members have priority enrollment! We offer a full schedule of classes and enrichment opportunities for ages 2 ½ - 6. Enrichment classes for our preschoolers include Spanish, Music, and Lunch Bunch. Age requirements: Children who turn 3 between 9/1/18-4/1/19 are able to attend the Pee Wee class which meets Wednesday and Thursday mornings (must be potty-trained). We have several classes for 3-year-old children, and children who turn 3 by 9/1/18 are eligible to attend those classes. Our 4s turn 4 before 9/1/18, and our Pre-K students turn 4 before 4/1/18. What would it look like IF….
Dayspring has been on a journey of “Seeking the Kingdom” in our hearts and our communities. We have been engaging in dialogue over a delicious soup supper. The final dinner will be February 7 from 5:30-7:00pm. Each dinner draws us closer to God’s calling and compelling us to act. We invite you to join us Wednesday, February 7 when we will create our vision:
“What would it look like IF our lives were really led more by God’s Kingdom and not by the marketplace?” Our two January dinners created visions and actions for :
1. What would it look like IF all our Arizona children had equal funding and support for their education?
2. What would it look like IF all immigrants, refugees and citizens could find safe and just means to live in community.
There are small and large action groups continuing from these dinners, so let us know where you might like to “belong”.

On Janua ry 21 , members attending the Dayspring charge conference approved the general fund budget for 2018 that was presented by the Dayspring finance committee. This budget is based on the 2017 actual income and expense statements and reflects the current level of giving. The Dayspring staff and lay leadership wi l l ensure that expenses are in line with actual giving throughout the coming year.
Thank you to the 800 individuals and households who make giving to the ministries of the church a part of their spiritual practice and a priority in their lives!!

Many thanks to Jim Baker, Bonny Sloane, and Nancy Jamison for their work with Family Promise over the years! Bonny and Jim kicked off the program, and have been active volunteers since relinquishing their leadership roles. Jim is now retiring as a Family Promise volunteer and Nancy is retiring as Kitchen Coordinator, though she plans to continue to help incoming coordinator Connie Harrison. We thank these volunteers and current Family Promise coordinator Maria Hase for all of their hard work over the years!

The season of Lent will soon be upon us. The first day of Lent, Ash Wednesday, happens to fall on Valentine’s Day this year. That’s poetic, I suppose, since Lent is a time to examine our hearts.
The word “Lent” comes from an old English word for “lengthen,” and refers to the lengthening of those long-anticipated days of spring. The forty-day period before Easter offers Christians pause to reflect on our spirituality, examine our hearts, and take an inventory of our lives. Why forty days? The number forty is derived from the traditional forty days Jesus spent in the wilderness at the beginning of his ministry. His desert sojourn was a time of solitude and self-examination, quiet prayer and meditation.
We are offering several such soul-nourishing opportunities during this season, including Sunday covenant groups (a new five-week session begins Feb. 25th), Wednesday Evening Fellowship meals and classes (starting Feb. 21st) and “Christian Mindfulness,” a seven-week Lenten experience facilitated by Joseph Lambrecht and myself, utilizing spiritual practices of centering prayer, lectio divina and contemplative prayer (begins the week of Feb. 5th, offered at three different times: Mondays from 6:30-7:30pm (Adult Room), Tuesdays from 1:30-2:30pm (Friendship Village) and Thursdays from 10:00-11:00am (Adult Room).
A Lenten devotional based on the poetry of Mary Oliver will be available to help enrich your journey to Easter. I hope to worship with you on Ash Wednesday, Valentine’s Day, at 7pm as we commence the season of Lent.

Our book this month is Testament of Youth by Vera Brittain. Hailed by the Times Literary Supplement as a book that helped "both form and define the mood of its time”, it speaks to any generation that has been irrevocably changed by war.
