A Message in a Bottle… While walking along one of our many beautiful
beaches here in St Augustine, one of our families found something
special. Mrs. Cavanaugh, mom to Mollie and Maggie, was collect-
ing debris and trash that had washed up from last weekends
storm, only to find that one of the bottles had a small scroll inside,
tied with pink ribbon. The letter is written in another language
and after translation, appears to have been written by a young girl.
It seems that her father had moved to Pinar del Rio, which is a city
in Cuba. She was writing a letter to her Papa, asking him to please
return home to get her, as she loved
him and missed him. What a neat
find! We appreciate the Cavanaugh
family sharing this story with local
news and our KES family. The next
time you are at the beach, be sure to
help with clean up. You just never
know what you may find!

MUSIC MAKES CONNECTIONS! (“RHYTHM IS MATH!”)
All KG, 1st
, and 2nd
Graders: Who can make a HOMEMADE RYHTYHM INSTRUMENT at home this
week? Remember the “Stomp” performers and come up with some
creative ideas. One simple example I showed you in class was:
Find an empty plastic water bottle (save the cap!)
Fill it halfway full with something small and hard (like uncooked
rice, beans, etc….) SHAKE IT LIKE A POLOROID! : )
Try to play your new HOMEMADE SHAKER and sing one of our
counting songs!
P.S. - Please do not bring your homemade rhythm instrument to
school unless your teacher is okay with that. Just play it at home
and HAVE FUN WITH RHYTHMS!

, 4TH
, AND 5TH
GRADE STUDENTS: Beginning Tuesday, NOVEMBER 1ST your child will be studying the
RECORDER (a song-flute like instrument) throughout the rest of this
school year. Many students already own a recorder from previous
years here at Ketterlinus or from another school. You are good to go!
If you need to purchase a new recorder, please send a check or cash
with the students name on it in the amount of $5.00. All 3rd, 4th and 5th
grade students here at Ketterlinus are required to have their recorder
with them every day beginning Tuesday, NOVEMBER 1ST. If there is
a financial hardship, please send a note to me and we will help provide
one to the student. Here are a few helpful hints to help ensure your
child‟s success on this instrument: Be sure that the students name is
labeled underneath their recorders Be sure that
your recorder stays in your BACKPACK EVERY-
DAY. Only take your recorder out in 2 places: 1)
HOME and 2) MUSIC ROOM (Beginning
Tuesday, NOVEMBER 1st)

PEDICULO -SIS? It's October and time to think about hats, scarves and jackets. Thinking about Halloween? Don't let the bugs bite! Remember to check your child's hair weekly for signs of
head lice. Keep your own hat and scarf. Don't share. Head lice are trans-ferred from head to head through hair brushes, scrunchies, hoodies, scarves and hats. As the weather changes and you bundle up more, think about head lice prevention. Don't share anything that touches your hair. Trivia: 1. Head lice do not live on your pets. 2. They only live on the hair on your head. 3. The first sign of head lice is itching at the
