Depth of Field

I LOVE playing with different depths of field in photography. When using a shallow depth of field, you can create a nice bokeh, or blur in the background of the image. In order to get a photo like this, you want your aperture (or F stop) set pretty low. Notice the image below. The weed is in perfect focus, while the sky and trees in the background are blurry. With deep depth, you can see the detail in the front of the frame, and far back. Usually, your aperture will be higher to get photos like this. Notice the photo on the left. The railroad, and all the buildings are in focus.

a new perspective DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES of common, every day things can be a fun way to explore the world. For this, I chose the Rexburg Tabernacle. It is a beautiful building, that a lot of people aren’t even aware is here in town! The building is magnificent. But what is even more magnificent is the different small, fun things that can be found around it. One of my favorite shots is “American Prism Co.” which is found next to the front doors of the tabernacle. It is a beautiful building, and I hope I was able to capture some of that beauty in my photos.

Macro AT FIRST macro photography seemed way too advanced for me. However, it soon became a love. Macro photography allows you to see the world in a whole new, miniature way, and sometimes helps you conquer your fears. Bees, anyone?

portraits PORTRAITURE CAN definitely seem a little scary. Asking people to pose and do different things? Yikes! But, it is also so much fun! Personally, it helps me to see more of who the individual is. The most important thing I have learned about Portraiture is to go with the flow! Don’t try and make the individual do something that feels out of character for them. If they want to be goofy, let them be! If they want to be more serious, just go with it!

bannack PortraitsBANNACK WAS such a fun experience. Totally and completely exhausting, but also completely worth it. This was the first time that portraiture became comfortable for me. Not only were there multiple opportunities to take portraits, there were also incredible opportunities to take landscapes and fine art pictures. As fun as Bannack was, I think most of my joy came in editing the photos. I felt that my creativity was able to come alive. On the next page, I chose to do a double exposure portrait as an out-of-the-box photo. I blended some of the background mountains of Bannack with a photo of Kim (one of the models). Overall, it was a great experience and it really helped me grow as a photographer.
