• How plants create energy.• The process by which plants take in CO2 and

H2O in the presence of sunlight to produce chemical energy using Chlorophyll.

• Reactants = CO2 + H2O + light energy must also be present but is not considered a reactant.

• Products = Sugar (C6H12O6) + O2

Photosynthesis Reactants

• Plants get CO2 from the air through tiny holes in leaves.

• Plants get H2O from the ground using roots to draw it up.

• They get energy form the sun. (Electromagnetic)

• Chlorophyll is necessary for plants to carry out Photosynthesis.

Photosynthesis Products

• Plants release Oxygen through the same tiny holes that they take in carbon dioxide.

• Photosynthesis also produces sugar (C6H12O6).

• What is the sugar used for?

• To grow (stems, leaves, branches, etc.)

• To reproduce (fruit, seeds, shoots, pollen, etc.)

• For protection (poisons, toxins, armor, spikes, thorns, etc.)

Why is Photosynthesis so important?

• It is the only way to convert the suns energy into food.

• The sun is the source of almost all energy on Earth.

• It also purifies our air taking out poisonous CO2 and replacing it with Oxygen.

• Without photosynthesis everyone and everything would die.
