Be ConnectedWhile Veterans Day is recognized each

November, it's always a good time to thank those who’ve served and sacrificed. It’s also always a good time to check on their well-being and let them know they are not alone.

Veteran suicides are an ongoing, significant problem across the nation. The city of Phoenix is taking action through an initiative called the Mayor’s Challenge to Prevent Suicide Among Service Members, Veterans and their Families.

Phoenix is a partner in Arizona's Be Connected program, which connects service members, veterans and families to resources and support. Training and support is available to all members of the community who want to be a part of the solution. To learn more, visit BeConnectedAZ.org or call 1-866-4AZ-VETS (429-8387) for 24/7 support.

The City of Phoenix is Hiring: You!

Some Kind WordsKaren, a Phoenix resident,

recently wrote to the Phoenix Fire Department about her recent experience:

“Yesterday my gas barbecue exploded. I called 911 and then used my two fire extinguishers, but it burst into flames four times ... I was out of hope ... (Phoenix Firefighters) immediately ran their hose lines, took control and saved my house. Please let them know how grateful I am.”

Thanks, Karen. We, too, are grateful for the service our dedicated public safety employees provide.

Ever wanted to drive on the right side of your vehicle? Here's your chance! The city's Public Works Department is looking for men and women to be Solid Waste Equipment Operators. Once hired, you get to operate solid waste collection trucks and other heavy equipment used for collecting refuse, recycling and other waste material. As a city worker, you'll get a robust benefits package which includes a pension, medical, dental and vision coverage, access to a tuition reimbursement program and much more. Phoenix.gov/Employment.

Also, the Phoenix Police Department is now hiring police recruits. Over the next few years, more than 400 new officers will join the city and begin a great and rewarding new career. The city of Phoenix offers one of the best compensation plans in the state. New police recruits are paid to attend a 20-week police academy and will earn 37 college credit hours upon graduation. Visit Phoenix.gov/Police/joinphxpd or e-mail [email protected].

In 2016, the city of Phoenix updated its Floodplain Management Plan to increase public safety. This lead to an improvement of the Community Rating System (CRS). The CRS, managed by the National Flood Insurance Program, rewards a community for making improvements by giving a discount on its users’ premiums.

The city was just accredited with a Class 5 designation, improving from its Class 6 status. This means property owners can save more money, up to 25 percent, on their flood insurance premiums. This rating change will improve flood safety and resilience as well as bring improvements to infrastructure. To see if this new change will affect you, meet with a flood insurance agent or visit Floodsmart.gov.
